  1. So using some of the info you posted: We're looking at a '08-'09 schedule of: D1 - Home - 3 games: South Dakota SI-Edwardsville Seattle D1 - Away - 7 games: South Dakota SI-Edwardsville Seattle Iowa State Tournament (2) Drake Tournament (2) Likely games: Mary (D2) Concordia-Moorhead (D3) Jamestown (NAIA) Minnesota-Crookston (D2) Mayville State (NAIA) Dakota Wesleyan (NAIA) Other possibilities: Northern State SW Minnesota NDSU SDSU
  2. Thank you for the info ... good info ... now ... what is UND's schedule going to look like for next year? From your comments it appears that no D1 program really wants to play UND (especially at UND) but no D2 school is really going to want to play UND either.
  3. Now that UND and USD have finished their last year in D2 what is the process and steps for D1 transition as it pertains to Bball? I believe it is a 7-year transition correct? I also believe this past year counts as year 1, correct? How will it affect their schedule the next season?
  4. At the risk of starting a fight ... Winona, and it probably wouldn't be close. UND: - last year went 5 - 5 against NSIC conference schools, Winona was undefeated - last year went 1 - 6 against other common opponents (St. Cloud, Mankato and Duluth). Winona was 3-0. - I'm not sure UND added any players who are immediately going to be game-changers Winona: - Has the D2 player of the year returning - 2 preseason all-americans - 4 of their 5 starters returning losing their PG Malvick (a significant but recoverable loss) - Has probably more size than UND on its roster, including that POY character
  5. The University of Nebraska is capable of creating a perennial top 25 team that has visited the World Series two years ago. The argument that it is a "southern" sport doesn't hold water ... its capable of being done (a) with the right coaching, (b) right fan support and © with the right facilities. Which probably means UND doesn't stand a chance!
  6. Is there any? Who signed in the early period? Anyone sign in the spring so far?
  7. I'm not sure of the specifics but in addition to the normal waiting period for a team to be eligible for D1 post-season play a new CONFERENCE has much more arduous waiting period for eligibility. North Dakota and South Dakota would both be smart to play as independents for the next 3 or 4 years, apply for membership into the Mid-Continent and simply turn THAT conference into the NCC of D1!
  8. http://www.northcentralconference.org/info...ws/2006-07/NSIC Augustana, St. Cloud, UM-Duluth and UM-Mankato all have been accepted into the NSIC. That leaves Omaha the only school without a home at the moment. http://www.northernsun.org/index.cfm
  9. As a Winona fan (and parent) who was at the game I can truly say Karma is as probably as good of a word as any. This year throughout the year so many games were won that could have and should have been lost. The PG Malvick who lost the ball (and also missed the front end of a one-and-one 10 seconds earlier) should not hang his head at all ... Winona would not have been in the championship at all without his play during the NCAA regionals. There's no doubt in my mind that Winona is the better team but on this day they got out-played, out-coached and out-"fanned". Barton deserves the championship. Onto next year! I hope to see Winona play the Sioux in the NCAA regionals!

    #8 vs #1

Seriously ... can you name ANY school that has multiple SAME-SEASON sports that are both succesful on the field? The Florida comparison is two different seasons. There is no doubt a successful basketball team would put more fans in the stands but at UND history, legacy and fan following is truly behind hockey much like Football is at Nebraska.

    #8 vs #1

This is why UND will NEVER amount to anything in basketball.
  12. The assumption you are making is that NCC basketball the be-all-to end-all. Northern, Mary, Wayne State ... are all very good teams in the ND/SD region. Wisconsin-Parkside 86 South Dakota 75 Mary 86 St. Cloud State 77 Wayne State 90 South Dakota 86 Minnesota State 65 Concordia-St. Paul 71 Missouri Western State 95 Nebraska-Omaha 88 Northern State 88 North Dakota 84 Quincy 89 South Dakota 79 North Dakota 69 SW Minnesota State 78 NCC's non-conference record to date is an unimpressive 29-14 Head-to-head the NCC is 14-8 against the NSIC, with 8 of the wins coming against Bemidji, Crookston and Mary!
  13. And considering this is a MEN's Basketball thread ... the MEN's Basketballl championship is .... where? A school that supports women's basketball more than men. A school that is moving to D1 in a year is losing to average D2 teams. Time and paitience is needed with a new coach granted but ALL winning programs have great fan support and UND's basketball program is very far off in that regard.
  14. I make a comment about the lack of interest on Men's BBall. UND9296 and UNDFan responded defending the lack of response as timing. This thread has 14 respones .... 8 discuss changes/updates/additions to the Women's Basketball Team and -0- responses as in None, Nada, The Null Set, Nothing discuss changes/updates/additions to the Men's Basketball Team. IMO this goes to re-inforce the point ... the interst in Men's Basketball at North Dakota hovers somewhere around ... Nothing
  15. Because ... especially from a basketball perspective ... the reason school X is playing at the D1 level is to get a cut of the very lucrative TV contract that is shared equally amongst every D1 member. The more members in D1 the smaller the pie ... not everyone wants to share their pie.
  16. I don't mean to be inflammatory and this is sincerely not meant to be mean ... but I'm amazed at the lack of interest in UND's Men's basketball program. If this board is any indiciation, and it should be, prior to this thread the last Men's basketball comment was on August 2nd. Since then there have been multiple posts on women's hockey, baseball and the soccer program. By contrast the NDSU has had numerous new threads and muliptle posts on just Men's basketball over that same time period. Yes ... it is a slow period for basketball but ... it is the end of the AAU season, recruiting, new season just upon us, new coach ... i.e. there is plenty to talk to. This thread was started asking about the '07 basketball recruiting class and there are more posts pertaining to the women's program than the men's. I know success breads interest but my goodness!
  17. Part of it was the change in coaches, frankly part of it was promises that were made (by the previous coaching staff) that weren't honored (by both the previous staff as well as the new staff) and part of it was that Jones did not make a huge sales pitch to keep Rayfield ... it was more ... "comme si comme sa".
  18. UND messed up bad, both Rayfield and his teammate Smith had high interest in UND. Let's see the D2 National Champs wanted them but ... UND is/was too good for them! Hmmmm. http://www.wissports.net/wishoops/courtsid...4&nid=13610 Rayfield latest state star to select Winona State 7/7/2006 - Wisconsin Sports Network By Mark Miller Wishoops.net Editor The opportunity to play for one of the nation
  19. Here's the thing ... Generally the Men's B-ball coach has a lot of input if not control over the schedule - It just so happened UND was without a head coach for much of the planning stages. Second, the ability to make the D2 playoffs will be entirely contingenet on a strong showing in the NCC. Top two or three finish and they'll get in ... for sure. Third, a new coach, new system, new players ... a soft non-conference schedule is probably needed for this team. Would it be nice to see K-State or Winona or some other stronger programs ... sure but given all of the off-season turmoil I'm not sure it is realistic to expect much more than this.

  21. From what I heard Herbst was going to automatically be a finalist just because so many people (Glas, the players ...) have recommended him. Whether he is a legitimate candidate is up for discussion. I think an under-the-radar "Craig Smith" kind of candidate is Tom Brown from Winona State. He is a big part of their success and is an up and coming star. He's got the DII National Championship credential and brings that youthful enthusiasim that this program could use.
  22. The initial conversation the father had with the UND AD was that he would get his release. The AD changed his mind the next day saying he wouldn't release him the "Glas" situation was resolved. The ironic part of this (if you read the article that was referenced two posts ago) was that Rayfield's high school teammate was granted his release immediately from D2 Lewis University when their head coach left (ironically for Northern Iowa).
  23. I have to add my voice that comparing Winona and UND's location is not the same. Out of Winona's top 7 players - 4 are from Wisconsin and 1 from Illinois. Minneapolis-St. Paul, Milwaukee, Madison and Green Bay are all 200 miles or less from Winona. Heck UND even recruits from Wisconsin with 4 of their players from that state. Having said that ... for most basketball players ... distance/location is a secondary priority compared to coaching stability, winning, opportunity to play, facilities, fan support and other basketball related aspects. That is not to say you'll get every recruit you want but there shouldn't be a D2 basketball recruit anywhere within 200 miles of Grand Forks that UND loses unless they don't want them. That is the mistake they are making. They are letting SW Minnesota, Minot State, South Dakota, Nothern State, Crookston and others like these to win battles against UND. The AD needs to get this circus fixed. He needs a Tim Miles kind of coach. He needs to pay him well. Take your time making this decision because it needs to be the last time you do this for 5 years or more. Your roster is pretty well filled out. A few holes here and there but nothing to materially impact next year. The greatest most consistent winningest organizations have superior stability. Their coaches are stable, their players are stable and their fans are stable. Northern State in Aberdeen is the perfect example. A school with 2,000 students leads the nation in D2 attendance. Its winning percentage is unbelievable.
  24. What about this as a scenario? The "D1 decision" is far from having been made. At the earliest it may be a year down the road. Therefore ... Herbst is given a 1-year interim job whereby he: 1. Gets a year to show his stuff 2. An in depth full fledge coaching search is done in conjunction with the timing of the "D1 decision". 3. Herbst fills out this years recruiting class since he already is the primary recruiter.
  25. Todd who? Koering from NDSU? I was under the impression Kelly Boe the assistant at CSP was going to get the job.
