redwing77
One protester's sign bore a large swastika with the words, "It's just a logo, right?" Please tell me who has this logo for a team?? Even in Germany anything with the swastika is banned. If a video game has it its banned so this protester is a f-cking idiot. A swastika is a hell of a lot worse than the Sioux logo. Maybe then St. Cloud should switch to the swastika logo since the NCAA says the Sioux nickname is NOT hostile and abusive (anymore). Hey SCSU its just a logo right?? Dumb@sses THough I agree with the swastika thing, your statement regarding the NCAA and us isn't entirely correct. We're temporarily off the hostile and abusive list for the period of three years. It becomes permanent provided we can find at least one Sioux tribe to sign a formal document supporting our use of the nickname in a time period of 3 years. There's a difference. CDog
Sorry to correct you Redwing, but as per the settlement, the ncaa had to make a statement that the nickname and logo were not hostile and abusive. As I read the settlement document, it does not state that the nickname and logo becomes H and A again if they do not get Sioux tribe approval. Chief Illiniwek Supporter
Here's a story about how there are only three people left in the Onieda nation (near Green Bay, Wisconsin) who speak a dialect of their language: http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/c...2&cset=true Hinton is one of three remaining elders who speak this vivid tongue, surviving matriarchs from the last generation to communicate in Oneida. Most members of the Wisconsin tribe today know basic vocabulary but can't use it in conversations. My question is this: obviously this removal of their proud, dignified culture is solely caused by those ignorant, bigoted white European-American types who STILL (despite all our efforts at re-education) insist on using words like "Sioux" (but not Seminole or Ute) to describe sports teams on the University level. But how??? FWLIW, the tribe of 15,000 members has found time time to open a casino and multi-story parking deck in Green Bay. And that undoubtedly would have been accomplished far sooner if only the Sioux nickname would have been eliminated when we first demanded it. Chief Illiniwek Supporter
...St. Clown...Oh no!! You're making fun of religion!! A fan of North Dakota is taking advantage of the name of a rival college to discriminate and insult!! This cannot be!! The ONLY solution for this outrage is for Saint Cloud State to immediately change the name of its entire college. Why, I remember when I was marching in the North Dakota band at SCSU's homecoming; people were holding up pictures of skinned Saints. They were probably someone's grandmother, and I know if it was my wonderful grandmother...

How did we get to this point where irrational thought processes and arguments/positions like those referred to by the Chief are actually given credence and weight. How the hell can one arguing about skinned native americans and another arguing that the fighting sioux logo is like the swastika get viewed with anything but scorn and/or amusement? Chief Illiniwek Supporter
How did we get to this point where irrational thought processes and arguments/positions like those referred to by the Chief are actually given credence and weight... Not trying to get too far off the subject here; nor am I going to engage in a Constitutional debate. But in the last few days I have heard of two Supreme Court cases: one in which a person (using the term loosely) is trying to say that he doesn't deserve the death penalty because all he did was rape an eight year old girl: he didn't kill her. Another person is trying to convince me that the current execution method is "cruel and unusual" (and of course, by extension say he shouldn't be put to death), and his crime was killing a couple in front of their children. I can't even begin to give any weight to the opinions of these people. I certainly refuse to be lectured to by these sub-humans. The larger issue is that the inmates have been running the asylum for way too long already. Only in America could silliness like this prevail. We've virtually solved hunger, health care is more than adequate and general comfort issues are generally back-burnered these days. Last year a headline that should have gathered more interest had to do with the developing economic giants like India and China telling us that they couldn't support pollution control until they "caught up" to us in comfort issues. We're far and away the country with the most time to even consider this garbage (and that's where we return to the whole PC craze and the nickname "insult" idiocy of this thread). Criminals have more rights than the common law abiding citizen and that is not right.
UND85
Funny how the protesters at St.Clown U only came out for the Friday night hockey game to protest. None were found on Saturday nor were any present last night (Thursday) at the basketball games when the Sioux were in town. They must really be passionate for this cause to only come to one event. Our basketball fans felt bad that they weren't screamed at after driving all the way from GF.

darell1976
So if UND decides to change the name you think there will still be protesters since it will take a while to take all the Sioux logos out of the Ralph?? Also i haven't heard much media for the swastika incidents, now if someone spray painted a Sioux logo on their campus there would really be hell to pay, FNC, and CNN would be on campus. I'm glad you asked! The reason you haven't heard much about it is because the officials at St. Cloud State have decided not to release any more details to the media concerning the hate crimes and swastikas. They feel the attention is promoting a "copy-cat" effect. I am not making this up.

Great letter and i am shocked that St. Cloud printed that in their paper. Those idiots in St. Cloud are a bunch of losers and whiners. If St. Cloud St. had done that protest right they would have blocked off a little area and told them stay there or be arrested, but as usual they are a bunch of Husky sh-t!!! I think we should have PETA on our side and force them to change their nickname. Put a picture of a husky with Michael Vick. I hate St. Clown State i am glad we only have to play them in hockey. UND85
It was interested that during the break between periods that SCSU had 2 students dressed in sumo wrestling suits and proceeded to play a game of hockey. My wife who is from Asia was offended by it. She said "Not all people from Asia are fat, wear their hair in a pony tail and wear a funny looking item around their waist and wrestle." I went through the back door of the area so didn't see the protesters but heard they were really screaming and some had bad breath! Now that is offensive
SiouxBlueChipper
I was at the Friday St. Cloud game and I can attest that it was a small group of protesters with very illogical posters (i.e. Swastika logo) and one very loud intimidating man screaming in Sioux fans faces. Although the University may have supported the protest, the workers at the arena were actually very apologetic and went out of their way to make my wife and me feel comfortable ("Sorry about them" "Welcome to St. Cloud, enjoy yourself", etc.) It just shows you the problems that can be caused by a very small, very vocal oppostion. After being at UND from 2001-2005 I know how frustrating the nickname debate is. I now live in the Twin Cities and I will be attending the UND v. MSU and UND v. UM games, I am curious to see what the reception to Sioux fans will be at those games!! I still have hope that we will be able to have the tribes true voices heard before we are forced to give up our very proud, very beautiful nickname and logo! Stay strong and may the FIGHTING SIOUX NAME LIVE FOREVER!!

When I was in Germany in the 1980's if the Polizei (sp) saw you with a Swastika you were more than likely going to recieve a beating. It is a topic that is not discussed. And of course this is why the protesters want to link your nickname to a universally recognized symbol of hatred. Logic doesn't matter, just that emotional first reaction. They would put your school on a level with baby-killers if they could figure out a shorthand, visual way to do it.
