Eskimos Posted February 2, 2006 Posted February 2, 2006 I'd guess "hold" moreso because of the dawning of home theatres and on-demand movies. I don't disagree with you at all, but just find it amusing that they announce plans to refurbish their existing theater after some competition was heading into town, but after that fell through, Carmike puts the brakes on their renovation. I go to less and less movies in Grand Forks each year, mainly because our theaters here are a dump. Quote

Just a question to anybody who might know: why didn't the movie "Good Night and Good Luck" ever make it to Grand Forks? Or did it and I just missed it? Did Carmike even try to get it? Quote

UND92,96 Posted February 2, 2006 Posted February 2, 2006 Not about GF, but I'm guessing everything would apply. Even mentions "Good Night and Good Luck." Article Good article. Thanks. I wonder if the Empire could perhaps fill a niche that the independent theater in Helena (mentioned in the article) fills? Quote
CoteauRinkRat Posted February 2, 2006 Posted February 2, 2006 I went to Good Night and Good Luck in Fargo at the Fargo Theatre. It is still playing there. I make the trip down to Fargo to see movies in their theaters on a regular basis. I wish the Empire would get a movie like this every once in a while. Quote
Smoggy Posted February 3, 2006 Posted February 3, 2006 The GF theater's are totally controlled by Carmike. Since there are so few screens, the company will tend to only put the big name movies on screen. The local management just doesn't have much say. I believe when Fahrenheit 9/11 came out a lot of people were upset that GF didn't get it. Many bitched to Carmike and they finally were able to get it. I don't mind going to a dumpy theater as long as it's only a buck or two. GF pays more than any market I've lived in and I was able to go to very swank theaters. I can't believe the Cities don't have a cheap theater. At least not that I've found on the southern side. Quote
Cratter Posted February 16, 2006 Posted February 16, 2006 Ok so odds are no theatre. I'm fine with that. I don't go to many movies, and its not because there isn't better style seating or selection. I say Canad should make their water park bigger. I mean why not? Make it a true destination. I have a feeling that if its pretty tame it won't be that big of a draw and people will get tired of it quickly. Quick someone call Canad Inns and make this a part of their plans, it would be a surefire success. Its called a FlowRider and it would be extremely popular. http://www.wavehouseathleticclub.com/FlowRider/flowrider.htm http://www.waveloch.com/flash/index.htm Quote
The Sicatoka Posted March 6, 2006 Posted March 6, 2006 Heavens! Did I see construction equipment and building materials on the north end of the Alerus Center this weekend!?!?! Quote
SiouxMeNow Posted March 6, 2006 Posted March 6, 2006 the "official" groundbreaking might be this week....although they've been driving pilings for a couple weeks....OH MY HEAD!! Stop the pounding!! Quote
UND Fan Posted March 9, 2006 Posted March 9, 2006 I am curious as to what the Canad people think about the proposed casino/hotel complex. The primary positive - it would bring more people to the GF area. The primary negative - it would be major competition as the other high-end hotel in the market. Quote
SiouxMeNow Posted March 10, 2006 Posted March 10, 2006 Wasn't aware the Casino deal had a hotel attached...thought they were just trying to get the Casino going - which I assume Canad would like since it would be another regional draw to the area. The GOOD NEWS is Canad finally going to become reality and that will help the Al! The Casino is a serious longshot but it will be an additional draw for the Canad and the Canad for it! All the naysayers who said "this will never happen" can now eat their words - I'm all for PROGRESSIVE GRAND FORKS!! Quote
Cratter Posted March 10, 2006 Posted March 10, 2006 How long before the rumors start to fly that its losing money and is considering moving to Fargo? (I heard that rumor about Cabelas a few years ago ) Quote
GeauxSioux Posted May 9, 2006 Posted May 9, 2006 I needed some good news, so I checked on the progress of Canad Inn and found that they have a website showing progress ans some renderings inside and out. http://www.canadinns.com/photogallery/gall...p?gallery_id=20 Quote

Pics/drawings look good! Apparently they haven't decided on a name yet. I had understood that they weren't going to call it a Canad Inn - thinking that it wouldn't be appropriate for a hotel in the States. Anyone know anything about this? Quote

I'd be surprised if it's not named CanadInns. One of the goals of the hotel is to use its name recognition up in Canada to draw people down. Quote
star2city Posted May 26, 2006 Posted May 26, 2006 Canad Hotel/Water Park attached to Bismarck Civic Center Canad outlines hotel's features Apparently, Canad and their financiers now have enough confidence to practically duplicate the Alerus/Canad complex in Bismarck. Quote
GeauxSioux Posted August 7, 2006 Posted August 7, 2006 For those of us who are fortunate enough to GF very often, links this are nice for checking on what is going on in GF http://www.canadinns.com/photogallery/gall...p?gallery_id=20 Construction looks like it is moving along nicely. Quote
GeauxSioux Posted October 24, 2006 Posted October 24, 2006 Canad Inn Topping Off Canad President Leo Ledohowski said the project is on track for completion in March 2007 with an opening a few weeks after that. The opening of the indoor water park, occupying an acre of land north of the hotel, is expected to follow shortly after, he said. Quote
SiouxMeNow Posted November 7, 2006 Posted November 7, 2006 drove by the Al today and WOW! That hotel is going to be a great addition! Hotel, waterpark, restaurants (at least one with a sky-view of GF!) Thats so cool!! It's going to be a great (convention-ready) complex out there! And wait to see how the land out there sells after the hotel goes in....42nd will be the NEW Columbia road!! Quote
GeauxSioux Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 Canad Inn Photo Gallery Looks like the project is really taking shape. I've heard differing dates for the opening, from Spring 2007 to Fall 2007. Does anybody know when the scheduled completion date is? We're coming to GF in July and hope it is ready. Quote

I believe it was recently reported in the local media that they are tentatively accepting reservations for late April, so barring any unexpected delays, it should be done by the time you visit. Quote
jimdahl Posted March 12, 2007 Posted March 12, 2007 I hadn't seen these before (and don't see them in this thread): 3-D artist rendering (Windows media, large) floorplan (pdf) Features: Tavern United British Pub (menu wine list) Garbonzo's Pizza Aalto's Garden Cafe Playmaker's Gaming Lounge (this one confuses me -- I guess gaming licenses are easy to get in Canada, but Grand Forks?) Grand Forks is starting to look very different than when I left. Quote

Grand Forks is starting to look very different than when I left. Actually, Garbonzo's has been replaced with a new restaurant concept called "L Bistro". I talked about the floor plans on my "Grand Forks Life" blog. As far as the gaming license, I would assume that Playmaker's will offer charitable gaming. I haven't heard about any application for a gaming license yet. Quote
