When is come to UND located in Grand Forks, ND - this guy is a total rando

So I see you are old school.  Only hire UND Alum or Red River Valley residents.  Not a great strategy for a D1 School.  Maybe works for Hockey but not many other sports.  You probably were happy with D2 athletics.   Sometimes you have to recruit outside the state of North Dakota to be competitive.  I for one am glad that we got some new blood in here.

Always gotta take the easy route it seems

Easy route would be hire a assistant coach or a former UND player or anyone with any connection to UND.  That seems to be the old UND way.  He went after a up and coming coach.  This is what I was hoping basketball would do.  Make a program great in a few years, leave for a better position but leaving the program in a better place.  This time i think Chavez DIDNT take the easy way out.

I think a more safe higher and better bet would be to hire a D1 assistant that has experience recruiting, and the last not some guy from the coast that he got tipped off from his son who is a graduate assistant

but risk reward

Because they don’t have unbelievable VB coaches in the midwest, right?  VB is outstanding in this part of the country.

The last coach was an assistant coach at a D1 school and had experience with recruiting.  Plus a wife that play college for a power 5 school and was in Olympics.  Neither had a proven record like this hire.

I never said that.  What D1 Midwest coach that took a school with a losing record never making the NCAA tournament and turned it around in 3 years?   Tell me who you would hire then?   I am not talking Bemidji State or Moorhead State.   I suppose you think we should hire Faith Dooly a UND all star alum coaching Concordia now.  VB is outstanding through out the country.  Id say ND and SD is probably the worst when you look at players playing D1.  You obviously didnt read my post where I said where the new coach recruited from to come to New Jersey.

Actually, when my daughter was playing HS volleyball only a couple of years ago.  It was generally acknowledged that the midwest had execellent high school volleyball.  Maybe that has changed.

"While exact state-by-state numbers aren't readily available in snippets, data shows over 470,000 girls played high school volleyball in the US in 2022-23, making it incredibly popular, second only to outdoor track, with states like California, Texas, Nebraska, and Minnesota leading in overall participation and competitiveness."

1)CA, 2)TX, 3)NE, 4)MN, 5)IL, 6)PA, 7)WI

3,4,5 & 7 are areas UND recruits for other sports.  I think a regional coach with strong connections should thive.

Some on here were worried he would not know how to recruit the Midwest and turns out that was some of the reason he wanted the job.

Knowing how to through connections and trying to do something completely new are vastly different things.  Hopefully he can create reliable contacts to help him.

He said in the press conference he already had some connections but thought UND would be more favorable because of distance from where he was at.
