undVBfan Posted December 10 Posted December 10 It's begun. Washington is in the portal. I expect more to follow. She's not surprising, her playing time was next to nothing compared to last year. She's a little undersized, but has good hops. She seemed to connect well with Norris and Timperley last year, so this year was a surprise. There never seemed to be a solid connection with the setter at any point this year, so I have no idea what happened. 🤷♂️I do believe overall they tried too hard to run in-system sets with out-of-system passes, so consistent connections with anyone were scarce. How is it possible UND would still be paying him in 2025? Tupac has been here for 4 years. When Tiffin was let go he supposedly had a year left on his contract. With a salary of $100,000 (nice round number) would UND pay him ~$2000/month for 48 months? Quote

undVBfan Posted December 12 Posted December 12 Got it. Then, to quote Miss Emily Litella, "Nevermind." For what it's worth, Tiffin is coaching at D3 Schreiner University in Kerrville TX. No, I had never heard of it either. 🙂They went 24-7 this year. Miss Emily Litella Quote
undVBfan Posted December 15 Posted December 15 See Rugley is in the portal. She was a freshman who played most of the matches. I thought I heard she had an owie during the season, so maybe she would have played in every match. She's the second middle to depart and the middle who saw the most time on court. We desperately need experienced physical middles. I thought Galvan was doing some nice things the later part of the season, so keeping her will be important. Rivera saw some action, but not a ton. She needs to be more physical. And everyone needs to figure out how to connect with the setter(s). Quote

Dustin Posted December 15 Posted December 15 NCAA Quarterfinals were this past weekend. Kentucky beat Creighton, Wisconsin beat Texas (in Austin), Texas A&M beat Nebraska (in Lincoln), and Pitt beat Purdue to become the Final Four. Some great matches. Set 4 of T A&M vs. UNL went to 37-35 (!!!) I'd snag an assistant from either Wisconsin, Nebraska, or Creighton to head UND's program. 4 Quote
undVBfan Posted December 17 Posted December 17 Agreed that the matches last weekend were fun to watch. Didn't see a lot of UK and Pitt. UNL/T A&M was crazy. It's nice to see players stay aggressive at crunch time, it drives me crazy when the players stop being aggressive late in tight sets. Play to win, not playing to not lose. Assistants from big time schools typically move on to being a HC at a big time school. We're looking for the unknown assistant likely from a school not in the top 20, someone hungry and looking for their big chance. Which is what I thought we had 4 years ago, but lets not beat on that anymore and move on. 😞 And I'm still not convinced they won't do well elsewhere, we'll see what they learned from their time here. UND92,96 Posted 15 hours ago Posted 15 hours ago New coach hired: https://www.grandforksherald.com/sports/college/und-hires-david-nguyen-as-volleyball-coach Definitely wasn't expecting UND to hire a current division I head coach, particularly one who has actually had some success. 3 Quote
Dustin Posted 14 hours ago Posted 14 hours ago THE DAVID NGYUEN FILE Position: Head Coach Hometown: Glen Allen, Va. Education: Virginia Commonwealth (2018) Family: David and his wife, Kaylin, have two children Biggest question mark to me - can he recruit the Midwest?? Quote

SIOUXFAN97 Posted 14 hours ago Posted 14 hours ago how much would any of the bottom three cost UND? Quote

NewUndFan Posted 13 hours ago Posted 13 hours ago The hire does pass the smell test. Took a terrible volleyball program from bottom to making the NCAA tournament in a short time. Already a head coach that has a proven record. I dont think we could have got much better. Last coach was a assistant at a good program with a wife that played college and the Olympics and that didnt work out. I think if he knows talent, he wont have a issue recruiting. Kind of excited about this hire and usually I am not with Chavez hires. 2 Quote

I think Hutter (WBB) is still a work in progress. I think Sather (MBB) is an unmitigated disaster and the moment he is sent packing, it will represent a step forward. I am a long-time critic of Chaves, but I think he is getting better at hiring coaches. 2 Quote

I dont credit him with hiring Schmidt. Per sources he was told he was hiring him and others had to reach to Schmidt not him. I credit him for extending Bubba and Sather though. Jackson for hockey was a pretty easy hiring the assistant. I will give him credit for moving on though from the previous coach. 2 Quote

NewUndFan Posted 13 hours ago Posted 13 hours ago Looking at the new coaches roster I see 2 players from Turkey, 3 from Italy, 1 from Peru. Then girls from Florida, Arizona, California and even one from Minnesota. All coming to a school in New Jersey. I think he will do just fine recruiting. Quote

Not exactly a destination place either. If he can recruit to New Jersey, I think he can recruit here. Most of current roster isnt from the Midwest. 1 Quote
