Because they are not as form fitting as a knit sock they "hid" a lot of pucks. Thus, goalies hated Cooperalls.

Remember Phil Housley’s South St. Paul team wore those I think at the state tournament.  Clear hockey boards and Cooperalls, very unique things for the viewing audience.
