UND Recruits - 2004/05 Updates

Sounds like we got a speedster in Matt Watkins. He won the fastest skater competition at the BCHL all star game. Maybe another Kevin Spiewak. Spiewak was one of my all time favorites. When he would get the puck it was just exciting to see what would happen. It seems like he scored in the big games. Against Maine in the semi's in 2000. Against Michigan State in the semi's in 2001. He never really racked up much for points but was one of my favorites because he never quit. Chris Porter kinda reminds me of spiewak. Any other thoughts on Spiewak from anyone?

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Spiewak is by far my favorite player of all time. A real class act. He agreed to meeting my son for his fourth birthday. Blais and Berry set it up as Kevin was helping out with the camps. He's continued to agree to sign pictures/pucks etc. for my son (my son's been going to games since he was two and used to refer to Spiewak as his 'best buddy') I try to keep up with what is going on with him.

Kevin was the epitome of speed kills. He won the ECHL All-star speed competition his rookie year so if Watkins can do it too great!

Kevin has continued to be a great asset to the South Carolina Stingrays he plays for. He had a stellar season in points and ice time last season and was on track this year until he broke his foot and was out 12 games. He has picked up where he left off, but missing games like that can take you out of any all-star consideration. Here are a couple of comments that have been made about him over the last year or so:

"He'll be one of the centerpieces of our team this season. He's a player that can play in every situation and will be on the ice in the final minute of the game. His speed is unmatched at this level."

Spiewak is one of my all time favorites too.  Super hard working, fast, and went about playing with little fanfare.  Have had a chance to meet him and he's the kind of guy you want to root for.

Here's a couple of direct quotes from Kevin during an interview on audio feed last fall to back up your comments Dagies:

"Try your best all the time."
"Keep playing.  Keep trying."

"Never give up."

About the last two quotes Kevin said he always felt his destiny was in his own hands. He was never picked first and left out of the draft but never let those things bother him.

I see that Toews has caught Gergan for total points despite playing 4 less games.

I have no reason to dispute what you are saying, but I did hear some mutterings  on Saturday at the X during the Warroad game from those with ties to the MHD squad that another Spud had verballed to UND for '06-07.  No names were mentioned.  Another person that I sat near heard the same from a local radio broadcast on their drive down to St. Paul on Friday.

From what I understand- said player informed the UND coaches the only place he wants to play is UND and he is going to try and walk on regardless of any offer from UND for the 06-07 season. I would like to see Moorheads #1 powerplay unit playing for the Sioux in the future - there are 6 or 7 seniors off the Moorhead squad that have legitimate shots at playing D1 hockey. To join the "compare to Speiwak" talk - I'll throw out Cory Johnson from Moorhead - about the same size, same speed and same tenacity. Hopefully he wises up and decides to put hockey over football. I'd hate to see him try out for the Bison (as was reported).

Speed kills, isn't that what it is inscribed above the Sioux lockerroom door? Of late, their lack of speed is one thing hurting the Sioux. They could use a player like Cory Johnson. Although lacking in size, he is athletic, has great wheels, is very good with the puck and has nice vision. I have long thought he would look good in the green and white. He is definitely in the Spiewak/Notermann mold.

Also, from what I have been told by the family Drew Fisher is residing with (he transferred to Moorhead the Falls), his dream has always been to play for UND.

Just because it is his dream doesn't necessarily mean it's going to happen.

I went to UND with Kyle Graalum's sister.  She said that all Kyle ever wanted to do was to play for the Sioux.  It's not happening and probably will never happen.

I'm not doubting the skill of Johnson or Fisher, but I am saying that just because it is a dream, doesn't mean that it's going to become a reality.

We don't take all comers like NDSU does

RW77,

I know nothing of Cory Johnson's post-graduate aspirations. If he pursues hockey I would think he could be a decent D1 player and in that situation wouldn't mind watching him in the green and white.

As for Fisher, the point I was making when discussing his dream of playing at UND is it wouldn't surprise me if he told the UND coaches he would turn down other offers, assuming he received any, and walk-on at UND. He is a good player and will play D1 somewhere - UND could be that place.

With all respect to Graalum, he came from a very weak program in high school and has never had the skills Fisher or Johnson have, nor did he ever face the competition they did.

I'm not saying that Johnson or Fisher are Sioux material, but your comparison is a joke. They are not even in the same league.

Is Chorney playing in a tourney somewhere, or is he injured? I thought I saw his name on the list of a U17/18 team that was playing currently.

Either way, he hasn't suited up for the Sabres in a few weeks.

Also good to see Toews catch Gergen in points with 4 less games played.

Wisconsin currently has 2 recruits http://members.aol.com/cheisenber/Recruit05.htm that are already for 2007. Talk about looking into the future! One is an '88 and one is an '89! That is really something to take a leap of faith into a kid who is still 15(birthday is in august of 89) and has much more developing to do. Wonder if we'll be hearing his name anymore in the future.....Kyle Turris. He plays in the PIJHL for Grandview. Regular season stats are 30 GP, 13 G, 20 A. Not standout numbers. Does anyone know much about the style of the PIJHL is it more defensive minded or what?

I hope all of our recruits do well as all of them are still playing as far as i know except for Vandevelde and Brad Miller(injured). I believe the rest are playing as of right now so lets cross our fingers that they all stay healthy and are ready to come put on a green and white sweater next year! (By the way, did anyone else really like the black jerseys the team finally wore in st cloud?)

Vandevelde is still playing, he's in Lincoln with Brian Lee...Vandevelde had 2 assists tonight for the Stars, and Lee had an assist on the powerplay. Nice first game for the boys...

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Lincoln picks up Lee, Vandevelde and Kyle Hardwick over the weekend, not a bad windfall for coach Johnson looking towards the playoffs.

Lincoln beat Omaha 6-5 in OT.

Lee 0-1-1 +3

Hardwick 0-0-0 +1

Vandy 0-2-2 +1, took 6 shots

Pretty nice first game, adjusting to a higher level of play. Although it's safe to say they won't see anyone much quicker than Barribal.
