The season gets underway tomorrow as UND travels down to take on UNI.

Synopsis on UNI (predicted 2nd in MVC)

UNI didn't have a typical year last year, finishing around .500.  However, don't expect this again from Coach Jacobson and crew. Expectations are high once again in Cedar Falls to challenge Wichita State for the conference crown.  They have the players to run a high octane offense that can stroke it from beyond the arc (ESPN has them as one of the top team in the nation for shooting 3's). The defense was the biggest issue for them last year, so if they can clear that up and shoot well, they could make some noise this year in the MVC and potentially in the NCAAs.

Players to Watch:

#10 Seth Tuttle (SR)

Forward

6'8

One of the best post players in the MVC, rebounds extremely well and shoots at a high percentage.  Excellent free throw shooter and if you give him the shot he will take a 3 every now and then.  We will have our hands full with this guy

#5 Matt Bohannon (JR)

Guard

6'4

This man has one job... and he does his job quite well.  He can shoot the 3.  Have to keep his open looks to a minimum

#1 Deon Mitchell (SR)

Guard

6'1

Stud Point Guard for Jacobson.  Can beat you a number of different ways off and on the dribble.  He is a little weak from the line.  Sneaky rebound guy, not afraid to mix it up every once and a while.

Keys to the game:

1) Be ready to handle UNI's Pressure:  They play a pressure defense so Hooker, Tyler, De Rouen need to handle the rock and not be careless.  Keeping the turnovers to around 12 or less will help keep UND in this game

2) Efficient offense from UND:  UND cannot have many empty possessions, so they need to make every possession count and make sure to find the open man.  Make the extra pass.

3) Perimeter D:  Contest UNI from the 3 point line.  Make them work for every 3 they get.  Communication when running man or zone will be critical to make sure there is no breakdown for the open 3.  UNI will make us pay for every look they get.

4) Limit 2nd chance points:  Rebound the ball.  Put bodies on the man and be aggressive on the defensive boards.  Limit the chances Tuttle gets on the O-Boards

The Call:

Some say this could the best team we play all year.  I disagree and think the Gophers hold that distinction.  This is going to be a very hard game for UND to win.  Everything needs to go exactly right for this squad with a bunch of new parts to have a chance.  But this is basketball and anything can happen.  I think UND surprises people by playing well and giving fans hope that this so call gelling period will be less than previously thought.  However, UNI has enough experience and talent to get Jacobson his all time winning mark at UNI

UNI 74

UND 62
