  1. I forgot one other positive. Great turnout yesterday by the UND faithful. If we could get that from the fans/students every game we would soon have the best home court advantage in the conference after Weber and Montana. I would say we are in the conversation for #3 right now, but if we have a crowd like yesterday every game it would be far and away the 3rd best.
  2. I take back my statement from above. After watching several NDSU games this year I am now 100% positive UND could've used both local kids Werner and Jacobson on their team this year. Werner makes up for his lack of size with long arms and effort. I think he leads the Summit league in block shots. Those two are a big part of why NDSU is on top of the Summit League right now.
  3. I think the team needs to win 4 out of the next 6 to get back in the race. Doable, but they need to close out some of these tight games. A couple thoughts from the 3 game home stand. Positives - Hooker and Shanks continue to growth and get better each game. One is a soph and the other a FR so that is exciting - I continue to like what Tyler and TDR bring to the table they are just a little inconsistent. Tyler is very streaky, when he's on he is on, when he's cold he's cold. TDR brings great energy to the defensive side of the ball but offensive production hot/cold like Tyler. - Hopefully Colemans game yesterday is a sign he will get back into things. I like what he brings to the 3 spot. - This team plays better defense than previous teams - The effort is there (I have never questioned the effort of this team, which is good to see) Negatives - Rebounding - it's been mentioned plenty - Missed layups - Probably cost UND 2 out of 3 games. - Consistency - We have a lot of guys who are very inconsistent. Last year you knew Huff was good for 15 plus and Anderson would give you 12-16. then you'd have a combination of other guys getting the rest. I think Hooker is starting to get to the point where you know he is going to be there every night and maybe Shanks after the home stand, but he is still very young. Other than that, the scoring is inconsistent. - 3 home losses. Tough to lose your first 3 conference home games even if they were close and entertaining. - Shields not redshirting - He made one jump shot yesterday, but other than that was getting push around on D and looked out of place on O. I really like the young man's potential and think he will be a really good player for UND, but I think we would be a lot better as a redshirt SR. than a true frosh playing 5 minutes every 3-4 games. No way he should play more minutes over Nash and Coleman right now. I don't know the whole situation, but from an outside perspective I think he would've been better off redshirting Overall not where UND needs to be, but they can still get back in the conference tourney race. The Big Sky tourney is going to be wide open as anyone can beat anyone this year. If they do that this year I would be fine with that, as I think next year and the year after are the years to try and make some noise with the talent the roster will have.
  4. UND loses to Portland St. Not a good week for UND Hoops. Hate to say must wins next weekend, but it could be for both.
  5. No question about it, Seales is a big time get. I like him coming out of HS better than both Crandall and Hooker and those two are going to end up being really good for UND.. I've said it a few times, but the 3 HS kids MBB signed this Nov have the potential to be really really good for UND.
  6. If true, very short sided thinking by the MBB staff. If a recruit doesn't choose your school because you wear Adidas, is he really worth recruiting? I would ask the staff this do kids like Nike or Adidas or do they like more free stuff? Without an aparral deal teams have to pay for this things themselves which means they are limited on what they can buy. If they have a deal they get more free stuff. So would a recruit like 3 sets of shoes, one travel suit, 2 sets of jerseys, 5-6 workout outfits, 2-3 pairs of sweats of free Nike? or Would a recruit like 6 pairs of shoes, 3 travel suits 4 sets of jerseys (Green, White, Black, Grey) 8-10 workout outfits, 2-3 pairs of sweats free of Adidas? I think I know what 99.9% of kids would prefer.......time for someone to have a talk with MBB and tell them to suck it up. The more free stuff the better. Like UND-1 mention plenty of basketball powerhouses where Adidas. SDSU is a regional example. They have an all sports deal with Under Armour and their Football team has 4 different sets of Uni's (2 blue, 1 yellow, 1 white) and the MBB & WBB teams have 4-5 uni's (Blue, White, Yellow, Grey, Black) I would love for UND FB and BB to have Green, White, Grey & Black Uni's Football could really have some great combos with some extra helmet colors too. Not doing this deal for MBB is almost as bad as having the ball with 1 minute left in a tie game and not doing a 2 for 1 so you have the ball last.
  7. "Kelley has already decided to go FBS with the Montana's and others. Fans that disagree can take it up with him and Faisson. If Minneapolis gets a bowl game, UND will be well represented there. Other sites: maybe a couple thousand depending on the location and how.many alums are in the area. If we don't move up, well probably be stuck in the WAC." There is so much wrong with this post I don't know where to begin. I don't really want to get into a back and forth on this I will just say until you can provide good "actual," information you should stick to volleyball. Whatever the 2nd tier is where the Dakota/Montana schools should be and probably will be. I can guarantee you that Kelley has not already decided to go FBS. Where do you get this stuff?
  8. Bohl had quite a few transfers his first few years at NDSU. You obviously aren't looking at UNDs class if you are hung up on a couple transfers. The majority of the class are ND, MN, & Manitoba hs kids. As the years progress and the team builds depth you will probably see 85-90% HS kids with maybe 1-2 transfers depending on need. Trust me, Bubba knows where the kids need to come from. There was an article in paper last week with him discussing it. I would expect another 3-4 ND kids in this class. UND is in very good hands with Bubba and his staff. All very well respected in the local HS circles.
  9. I dont know if they did, but I know they beat out a certain in state FCS team for a DL from New Town and a DE/OLB from Winnipeg. IMHO NDSU shouldn't be losing any kids to UND with where their program is at.. Recruiting is a crapshoot, based on previous posts I hardly doubt you are seriously just asking a question. With a great University and New Indoor Facility UND will be just fine when it comes to recruiting and football. Bubba's first class was great and I'm sure this one will be even better with 12 months to recruit compared to 1. Thanks for your continued interest in UND Football and Recruiting.
  10. I think the early 2000 numbers were inflated because of double headers and I'm guessing the 2004 numbers included the Kansas game. I've been following UND basketball for a long time and counting the women's program I think interest in UND basketball as a whole is at its best point of the D1 era. I think the encouraging thing is there is a lot of room for growth. Attendance is ok, but i think better non conference home games would go a long ways in helping attendance and giving the teams a chance at a better non conference record. Gopher women's game being an example even though that type of game won't come as often. NDSU, SDSU, USD, Omaha, Denver, umkc, should be home and homes we try to get with an occasional home and home or two for one with a MVC, Horizon, MWC school. Maybe put together a tournament like NDSu did this year. Continue to schedule schools like Iowa, N Iowa, Iowa St Minnesota, Wisconsin, Marquette, Nebraska Creighton,Colorado.for money games. Gophers should be priority every year. Lots of UND alums in Az and Cali so maybe ASU or Cal, Stanford. Strategic schedule can help grow attendance and interest. I also look at the fact that UND Basketball has a TV deal with FSN north and has been on multiple national tv stations the last few years. UND hockey, Football, NDSu football and basketball don't have deals with FSN north but UNDbasketball does. We had two programs playing to go to the big dance last year with one making it. Interest is at a good place you just need to continue to grow it. IMHO Jones could pick it up in this area. He should look to Brew and Bubba as good examples. Those guys take every opportunity possible to talk about there program to media fans donors and potential donors and fans. An example was a few days after Brews team makes the NCAAs, who is sitting in the first row mid court at the girls state tourney decked out in UND gear. Probably was shown and talked about on tv as well during the broadcast. That makes an impression on people in this state and helps gain more fans.

    AhundyP

What the heck is this? I just checked it out the other day. Most people think of the Sioux Shop as the official UND store regardless if it is or not. I know the first thing I think of when I think of UND is AhundyP?? Com'on man? Maybe expand the list of famous alumni stuff (Jackson, Kuper, Kleinsasser, Dressler, Hardin, Osborne,), football stuff, basketball stuff, NCHC stuff, Big Sky stuff, creative UND stuff, Throwback championship gear line maybe?. Plenty of ways I would've went before AhundyP. Epic fail.
  12. I can agree with this, but I do think UND does an ok job at players developing. Aaron Anderson came to UND as a kid with only 1 D1 offer and left an All Conference player. Troy Huff can to UND as a kid with very little D1 interest and left an All American and a pro. As for fundamentals I would agree, but fundamentals in basketball in general seem to be lacking in this day an age. Kids rely on their athletic ability to much in high school and then those habits tend to spill over to college. I would agree we need to improve with certain fundamentals though. (rebounding & boxing out) I also think bringing in a 6'2 and 6'5 guards, a legit tough 6'6 SF, and a strong athletic 6'8 PF could help rebounding next year.
  13. One in a class with 3 HS kids is not a big deal imo, plus he is needed to play PF next year. He also will only be a Soph and will have 3 years to play with that core group I mentioned. I have no problem with this signing. He'll be a good player for UND.
  14. I would agree this years team has to many transfers, but next year most of them will have a year of playing together under their belts and we add a fantastic incoming class. Fact of the matter is there are not to many HS kids I would take over Nash, TDR, and Tyler. Shanks is basically a HS kid as he came here two months into his freshman year. Calcterra and Salmonson were guys signed when we needed big guys that could play right away to go along with the guys that just graduated and Hobough and Stefan are walk ons. Each scenario is different, but I would agree this years team has to many...it is what it is for now. Looking ahead I think based on the last two years of recruiting we have seen a big shift in focus going back to HS kids which is good to see. I base my statement on the talent of that class from watching those kids on film. My basketball eye tells me that Seales and Crandall have the most basketball talent and potential I have seen from a UND signee ever. Hooker was close behind them out of HS, but these two guards have talent and potential that is off the charts for a BSC level athlete. I know nothing of what they are like between the ears, but BBall talent is outstanding. I think Collins is physically ready to play now, and I think Bubba would like this kid for a year on the football field when his BBall career is over. Could be one of our better defenders, and reminds me a lot of Kory Brown from NDSU. McDermott looks like a better version of Schuler IMO, with great potential as well. Comparing this class to Archer, Wilmer, Goodman, is no even close and that is no knock on those guys who were great program guys. They just aren't on the same talent level as the guys coming up. I really really like the HS kids Jones has signed the last few years (Hooker, Shanks, Crandall, Sheilds, Cashman, Seales, Mcdermott, Collins) and I think they along with what is returning next year will form a very good team. The year following I look at that core along with Drick Bernstein as a very seasoned and good core. We also don't know about signings next year as it pertains to that team. Talking 2 years out is tough, but by that time these guys will have played a lot of minutes. Point is I never expected a BSC championship this year, but I think we are setup for the following years to be in the conversation for one. I will save everyone the trouble I am not a Jones lover or hater. There are things he does well and things he doesn't I am just stating what I think.
  15. The fire Jones crowd probably won't agree with me but if we can play like we did last night for 30 minutes, like we did against SDSU, UNI we will be fine in conference play. I realize those games were losses but those teams are better than what the Big Sky offers. Yes if we lay eggs like against Texas Pan Am and NDSU we'll be in trouble but even last years team laid a few eggs. We also won't be on the road every game like they have had to in non conference play. For me the goal of this season has always been to make the BSC tourney and then see what happens from there. This year is a building year for the next two when we should have a shot at conference titles if our bigs develop. I think the HS kids jones signed this year along with Crandall coming in are going to be fantastic players for UND. Next years backcourt depth will be really good. 15-16 Hooker Tyler TDR Drick Bernstein Shanks Bench Crandall Seales Coleman Cashman Sheilds Collins McDermott 16-17 Hooker Crandall Seales Drick Shanks Bench Collins McDermott Cashman Sheilds Fr G Fr C/PF
  16. Far and away the best player on the team IMHO. I don't think he is at 100% either. UND needs him to get healthy before conference. I really like the makeup of UNDs backcourt this the next few years with Hooker being the leader.
  17. Not that disappointing.....that was a fantastic basketball game to watch. Two very good teams trading punches. One team had to lose it and we had a couple bad timed turnovers. Great job in non conference by the team, now onto the important games. UND fans need to get behind this team at home. We have a shot to host again this year but the Big Sky will be tough. We need to take care of home games. Last couple years Big Sky has been a very strong WBB conference. On a side note Dyer is having a fantastic year. Lloyd and Evers get a lot of well deserved credit but Dyer is really starting to become a big time scorer. She is playing at an all conference level. She could be the X factor for winning the title. Kind of exciting she is only a sophomore.
  18. Probably is, but I did read somewhere Jess Meyers said the program loses 1.2 million a year, a lot because of European Scholarships. That is a lot of money for an athletic department to be losing every year, and Duluth is a top program. They could probably save $150,000-$200,000 by cutting some salaries. Outside the box thought, but could this be the start of Duluth dropping women's hockey and using that extra money to help fund scholarships for a D1 move? Don't know if they could swing that, but it will be interesting to see what happens.
  19. Looks like Shanks is eligible. Guessing that means he plays against DSU. As for the offense vs. NDSU, the Bison were hedging our guards hard because they scouted UND well and noticed our screeners have been very little threats to score so far this year. We need our guards to see those guys when they are open. At the same time we need our screeners ready to catch the ball and score if teams are going to hedge like that. Guessing this has been a focus at practice this week. I wouldn't mind seeing Nash and Coleman setting screens if teams are going to hedge like that which they will after the NDSU game. Those guys are good leapers and decent shooters. Could be some lob potential or pick and pop potential.
  20. Wow, that game totally shocked me. I am very surprised by that outcome. Hats off to coach Richman on a great defensive game plan. They completely took UND out of the game. I will still maintain UND has the more talented roster, but that was some of the worst basketball I have seen. Jones needs to get this team gelling quickly for Big Sky play. Still early in the year, but that was really bad basketball. Also, did anyone notice how bad the floor was? There were guys slipping all over the place, and that is probably why Hooker tweaked his leg. C'mon NDSU and Scheels Arena, get your stuff together.....you are going to have a lot of hurt players by years end on a floor like that.
  21. Nice to see Jade Lawrence is on campus this weekend, hope we can land him. Has anyone heard if UND is recruiting his teammate WR Cody Dorrow? 1st year playing football this year and he completely blew up. You can google him and find lots of media stories done on him this season. 6'3 WR that is really athletic. Being he has only played FB for one year, he could really develop with college coaching weight room etc. He has scholarship offers for BBall and i've heard a lot of football coaches are very interested. Curious if anyone knows if UND is interested?
  22. Having watched both teams a few times I think UND is the better and more talented team, but NDSU was last year and UND won by 19 points. In rivalry games anything can happen. Just like Brooke Lemar putting NDSU on her back and almost beating UND. Alexander is really the only consistent scoring threat they have. They will need big games from Dupree, Jacobson, and Miller to keep this close. UND is much more athletic and I think NDSU is going to struggle to guard UND's athletes. UND has also struggled guarding the post, but NDSU doesn't really have a post presence. If NDSU is shooting well it will be a game if not I think UND wins.
  23. Not a full highlight tape, but the news clip has a few. She can do a little bit of everything as you can see. Very athletic and I think she will probably play right away next year. She is not quite on the same level as Hannah Stewart, but I think they have similar games. She will be a very nice player for UND imho. http://www.wday.com/content/davies-klabo-commits-und-0
  24. Not a Big Sky score but some UND connections on TV tonight. UND alum and Stephen MN native Craig Smith and USD are up at the half on Creighton and former UND assistant Greg Mcdermott. Always thought Smith would've been a nice fit at UND. A couple other connections are his top assistant was our assistant coach from the last 3 years that we couldn't keep. Trey Burnette from Williston St. who unofficialed to UND a few times last year dropped 16 in the first half for USD. USD will probably lose pace in the second half, but a nice first half for coach Smith. We should get them on the non conference schedule.
  25. Heidlebaugh is a great athlete, one of the best in the state without a doubt. I actually haven't seen him through a fb, so I can't speak for his talents as a QB but on being a pure athlete he is a great pick up. He is 6'5 as well so lots of opportunity to grow in a college weight program. Could look back on him in a few years as a really really good pick up. If you get the chance check him out playing basketball this winter, he plays like a football player on the b-ball court kind of like Kleinsasser used too. Not comparing him to Jim by any means, but thats how he plays basketball......big time competitor. Another ND kid Anthony Olson just gave a verbal to Tommy Dosch at Northern State. Thought UND was maybe interested and really surprised he is not going to end up at either UND or NDSU. I kind of liked him better than Ty Brooks at South, but I guess that is why i'm not a college scout. He was Northern's first verbal so I'm guessing he might've gotten a pretty good offer and was probably one of their top targets.
