i think the problem is there weren't any choices that met all those criteria. Plus, a lot of those points the committee came up with are purely opinions or silly. That's why I voted Nodaks in the hopes something representative of UND and ND could've evolved. Let's try the same exercise for Roughriders: Representative of state/region (Nope, Roughriders are either horseback riders from anywhere on earth, or else Teddy's southwestern US cavalry)Honor past/look to future (Nope, Roughriders were not from here. Unless we want to honor an award started in the 1960s. But why would we honor an honor? makes no sense)Promote pride, strength, fierceness, passion (agreed, this is a personal opinion)Sense of community/connectedness (agreed, Definitely isn't going to bring us all together)Intimidation to competitors (this point is just silly. no college athlete has ever been intimidated by a logo or name)Unique, recognizable, distinctly UND (There's some nice RR merchandise on sale at Red River High School. and plenty of cowboys on horseback in the ncaa)Formidable/fierce (agreed, once again, personal opinion)Inspiring, unforgettable (personal opinion, and another silly criteria)Beautiful/classy (Old guys on ponies are not beautiful, but could possibly be classy?)

don't worry Sic. Ref Anderson is going to draw up the design for the new logo.
-
assuming the same voting pool, 83.65% of nodaks voters would need to choose RR over FH. Not gonna happen.
-
as long as they don't yell fire, I think everything will be OK.
-
good point. They must really dislike Roughriders if that's the case. Can't imagine they would ever change their votes to Roughriders regardless of whatever the fighting Hawks logo is.
-
exactly. And I'm welcoming the choice of Hawks with open arms, instead of coming up with asinine ideas of why Hawks received more votes than my choice, I would encourage everyone else to do the same, as it will be our new name.
-
IMO yes. i see hawks all over the place, every day in North Dakota. I'm confused; wouldn't the men be the Lady Riders?
-
I feel there has to be more to it than just being unique. Roughriders may be unique to college sports but that doesn't automatically make it a great choice in my mind. I voted Nodaks. I felt it was the only choice remaining that, depending on how they used the name and what the logo was, could be linked to a source of pride at UND and the state. Roughriders would be a contrived name and would not create any extra enthusiasm on campus compared to Hawks IMO. there's nothing Roughrider about UND. the only time I saw a 10 gallon hat and (ass)chaps on campus was at a Halloween party years ago... to me, if we were to go with a human-based mascot/logo , it would have to fit into the atmosphere and culture of the campus. Roughriders just doesn't fit the bill IMO. this is UND, not Bonanzaville. I don't care how many times I hear "we are the Roughrider state", it's a silly, inaccurate nickname for the state that no one I know takes seriously. So for those reasons, and for the much less important reasons of it's a condom, it's two guys doing it as described by urban dictionary, it will be shortened to "Ridas" which IMO sounds asinine, and lastly it's the name of the local high school, i choose not to vote for roughriders. Yes, Hawks is popular. But fighting hawks, with a great logo design and strong support from the student body will be successful IMO.

I think it's just the first stage of grief.... denying reality, and coming up with any cockamamie theory to discredit everyone else's opinions to try and justify why a different choice is viewed favorably by the majority.
-
I agree with your analysis. if all of that happens, we would enter the last weekend with a chance to end up tied for third at the worst with another win, and possibly in third alone.... I think.... and if we're tied with Portland St. at the end of the year we have the head to head.... but if tied with NAU I think their conference wins will look better IMO, however, they have a division 2 victory.....
-
very true. you are about the only Roughrider supporter who posts that doesn't call people who have voted for other options uninformed morons.
-
there may be some Fighting Hawk voters that think the exact Blackhawk logo could be used.... but I also wonder how many people voted for Roughriders based on logos that cannot be used. Or how many chose Roughriders because they think TR's Roughriders were somehow affiliated with North Dakota. Regardless, the votes don't lie. I'm confident a unique logo can be designed, and it will help people rally behind the UND Fighting Hawks.
-
Exactly. a lot of people seem to be having a hard time grasping the reality that Roughriders is not nearly popular enough to win.
-
exactly. I made this same point a couple weeks ago. both nodaks and roughriders sounded ancient to the students. and no- buckeyes, hoosiers, etc. would never garner student support if they were to vote today.
-
let's not lump everyone together that voted a certain way. I voted Nodaks, but will move on and will now be voting Fighting Hawks. Go Hawks!
-
I don't think that dude does his homework. if 4 big sky teams gets in, I think we'll be in with two more wins. we will benefit from everyone else who sits ahead of us in the standings playing other teams above us in the standings over the next two weeks.
-
a lot of us who did not vote for Roughriders did so based on entirely different reasoning. there were several reasons not to vote for Roughriders, just as there were several reasons against any other name. I've never bought into the made-up history purported by the ND Tourism Dept. involving the Roughriders. And it appears i'm not alone in that line of thinking.
-
I don't think any more than the number of people who think any of the already in-use Roughriders logos floating around could be used.
-
the writing was pretty much on the wall after the first round. Hawks dominated, getting 50% more votes than any other choice. Hawks gained twice the support percentage-wise than either roughriders or nodaks did in this go-round. as ol' Hank would say, It's All Over But the Crying.
-
very true, that will be a definite plus if we can get in.
-
Good point on Idaho State. And the Weber game, too. If we do not make the playoffs, those are the two we have to look back on as the ones that got away. I just feel the ndsu game didn't benefit the team in terms of experience as much as it hurt our playoff chances.
-
I'm almost ashamed at how much Seinfeld still enters my mind for practically any situation. all the talk about the screw up of the runoff reminded me of jerry and Kramer talking about tax write-offs. We could substitute peter Johnson and Robert Kelly for Kramer and jerry and the word "write-off" with "runoff" in that scene and it would've played out almost perfectly.
-
I'm sure i'll get thumbs down for this. But, the obsession to play ndsu again may end up costing us more than the raw deal we got in the contract. Play another Drake this year, and we're sitting in pretty good shape with two weeks left. Then, win one playoff game, and we'd be playing ndsu anyway. That said, if we win out and 4 Big Sky teams make the playoffs, we're in.

I was talking with that 5th dentist we've all been wondering about. Turns out he has joined the other 4 in preferring either Nodaks or Fighting Hawks over Roughriders. #anythingbutroughriders
