When Sweeney speaks at a rate of 11 words per minute, there's a lot of airtime for Coach to fill. He brings a lot of info about the opponents to the discussion which is great. Listening to the away games ive heard, you can tell he wants our players to be successful in the worst possible way. But also tries to be objective and isn't afraid to point out mistakes and what needs to be corrected. He does a great job IMO.

if we're going to use UND to educate people about our area, I'd rather be Nodaks, and educate people about actual North Dakota history. however, I would rather our university concentrate on bragging/educating visitors on all the excellent opportunities UND offers.

I was answering your question regarding a statewide push to get rid of an unofficial state nickname. i agree those states nicknames are well known due in part to their universities. We tried that here. Twice. I don't view it as an obligation to have to try it again.

at least here in the eastern part of the state, I hear north Dakota referred to as the roughrider state maybe once a year. I never heard any references to roughriders in my four years at UND. it's an unofficial nickname, and just isn't used enough to bother making any push one way or the other IMO.

thanks for sharing the link! there's a lot of Roughrider pride in Arizona and New Mexico.

I think a lot of people are in "sucks less mode" when deciding how to vote. Maybe the best chance at unifying everyone would be to go with the UND Fighting Sucksless.

I guess the next question would be if the other finalists for michigans new name would include cavalries from half way across the country....

if Michigan had an Indian nickname for the past 80 years, and voted for a new name in 2015, I find it highly unlikely Wolverines would be a finalist.

Too many degrees of separation to be worthy of being und's nickname IMO.

we would be the only university named after an award named for a cavalry that had nothing to do with our state; maybe that's the "unique" angle being emphasized here. :-)

Calling the Bluff - Nickname and Donations
Siouxphan27 replied to NoiseInsideMyHead's topic in UND Nickname
To clarify, I will give at the same amount which hopefully will continue to increase throughout my life. However, if Roughriders is chosen, I may divert some general fund donations and designate them to the history department. North Dakota history, specifically. -
We can make this Roughriders vrs. Fighting Hawks
Siouxphan27 replied to NDinCO's topic in UND Nickname
I think Roughriders will receive a huge bump from Sundog supporters. I've heard the urban dictionary brought up in these nickname threads a few times in regard to sundogs. The first definition of a sundogger is almost identical to the second definition listed for a roughrider. So I would think the similarities would help roughrider poling. er, polling. So I think the Roughrider supporters can rest easy, as it will make it thru to the next round of voting. In fact I don't even think it's necessary for everyone to bother to vote this time; it will easily beat out Nodaks. -

Siouxphan27 replied to NDinCO's topic in UND Nickname
no, I wasn't including you in it. Some RR supporters' bashing of every other name had reached a new record high, while at the same time they were asking people who preferred other choices to come join them in voting RR. Sorry for the confusion. -
IMO that's because there's a history and tradition. If there was never a Sioux name at UND and they were voting today for a new name, they wouldn't choose Sioux, either.

I suggested Hooters at the beginning of this process. But it didn't perk anyone's attention.

I see there's a lot of student bashing going on lately out of frustration with their preference for fighting hawks. Fetch made a comment a few days ago that really got me thinking. He said Roughriders is just too old school for the kids. I hadn't thought of it in that light before. But, I can see how the students may view both Nodaks and Roughriders as old timer names.... old hick farmers, or 1800's cowboys.... Some/most of us that post here are older and maybe more nostalgic, and don't even think twice about an "older" looking logo or theme. At their age, the students are looking at future only. Maybe Hawks wasn't on their short list at the beginning of the process either, but given the 5 choices, it may have become their favorite by default. I was surprised the voter turnout wasn't greater. The low voter turnout has given the current students a much larger influence on the outcome than I would have imagined.

50% to win, or there will be a runoff between 2...
Siouxphan27 replied to Hayduke's topic in UND Nickname
So if a third vote is needed, it will be called the runoff's runoff. After that, Kelley will be runoff in the third, and only unanimous, runoff. -
P. Johnson and Kelly, both driving Buicks.

Good news but I agree with Sic, it should be between two choices right now. its embarrassing that the leadership at UND is so cognitively deficient they could not foresee the problem with a 3 way runoff.
