2024-25 University of North Dakota Hockey Season
Benny Baker replied to Frozen4sioux's topic in Men's Hockey
Yup, I agree he was a very good goalie last year but on a completely different level during the playoffs. That’s how you win championships. 5 losses in 31 starts isn’t that bad for a starting goalie. -

Sure. I won’t disagree, and if Halyk “wasn’t that bad”, then we necessarily agree that Davis wasn’t that “crappy” either. -

Right. I think that was the point someone was trying to make earlier; folks are confusing Davis with Halyk. -

Hey man, whatever floats your boat. I was more confused by the earlier comments that Davis was “crappy” “for a good chunk of the early season” and, particularly, .357’s comment about “last December’s version of Davis” when Davis only played 5 of Denver’s first 17 games (losing just 1) and never played in December, at all. -

Davis only played 5 games the first half of the season and was 3-1-1. He did not play at all in November or December. Perhaps his back up, Halyk, wasn’t the greatest during that stretch Davis was out though? -
Title IX, etc. No one seems to know how this plays out. On average, college football is 85% of an athletic department’s revenue. So do you pay your football players with 85% of your available funds? If so, how do you comply with Title IX? But then do you really have to pay your women’s swimming team the same amount as your football players? What an epic gong show this is becoming.

“unacceptable leadership”, allegedly. https://www.fox5vegas.com/2024/05/21/engelstad-foundation-pulls-funding-unlv-over-unacceptable-leadership/?outputType=amp https://thenevadaindependent.com/article/engelstad-foundation-a-key-unlv-donor-pulling-its-funding-from-the-university

I wondered the same. Hard to know who was more to blame with her fallout with Kennedy. Thought maybe Kennedy at first since he went through a similar scenario at Colorado. But now KEM and UNLV are going through a similar, but worse, fallout.
-
Engelstad Foundation severed ties with UNLV just last week. So more money in that bankroll … Too bad paying college athletes (above the table) wasn’t a thing in 1999 when Ralph had $100+M he was looking to spend on UND hockey.
-
Probably. Why play USHL for free when you can make a quarter million in front of ASU puck bunnies, and just transfer back to MSU next season? Gotta love modern day, amateur athletics …

Sure, here: https://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=177758 Cole Smith’s story is awesome, no doubt. But he’s an exception, not the rule. How many 60+ points players in MJHL routinely play in the NHL?
-
That’s part of my concern. Taylor Dickin also put up a few more points (92) than Andrew (82) in the MJHL, but after 2 seasons and 4 points, had to leave UND for Canadian college hockey.
-
Is Dalton Andrew taking the spot that was supposed to go to Jaksen Panzer?

NCAA at Engelstad would be awesome. However, the way things have been set up the last decade have been relatively favorable to UND: So long as they make it, they’re guaranteed to play up to two games in Fargo every other season. I don’t foresee UND being consistently ranked high enough year after year to have the opportunity for that many regional games in Grand Forks. -
Was pleasantly surprised with both their freshman performances. And as later round draft picks at the time, thought they could both end up as 20+ goal, 40+ point players for the Sioux as seniors. Welp, here we are …
-
Depends on the sport. Also, Memphis isn't P5 to begin with, either.
-
Gotcha. Yeah, that aspect makes sense. To your point, there might be higher ROI with billboards than having a Sioux player promoting your sandwiches on twitter.
-
At the time, Denver Post reported the reason for Gwoz's firing was both lack of postseason success (5 first round losses in 6 season despite 12 consecutive 20+ win seasons) and inability to reach an agreement on an extension.
-
Isn't there a qui-pro-quo for the business, though? I thought the idea behind Name, Image, and Likeness was that athletes could sell their Name, Image, and Likeness to a business in exchange for money. For example, the Tellmans give $X to the collective so long as Sioux players appear in a Red Pepper commercial; or every Friday night Cameron Berg needs to send out a tweet telling the drunk hockey crowd to pick up a Grinder After the Game; etc.
-
Right, for sure taxes are getting paid. I guess I was just wondering if Kunz was literally a "private employee" or, more likely, a 1099 independent contractor.
-
https://www.espn.com/college-sports/story/_/id/39974973/fedex-pledges-25m-5-years-nil-program-memphis UND's collective is going to need a lot of folks to kick in the $25 bucks a month to compete with some of these other schools. I fear the truth of the matter is that UND does not have a large enough alumni base nor is there a significant enough corporate presence in Grand Forks, North Dakota to enable UND to compete whatsoever in the NIL game.
-
So w-2s are issued to recipients of NIL funds, and the NIL collectives have to pay payroll taxes?
-
Things got so “awful”, in fact, that Denver had to fire a revered head coach to get their ship turned back around. Hope it doesn’t need to come to that around here.
-
Back in 2011, @redwing wrote this blog post on Goons World and it kind of seems like we've been here before. Some of the same themes have reappeared. Well this theme sure hasn't reappeared around UND the last 8 years.

Lol. Besides him, I wonder if there are any other college players born in the 1990s? That is too funny.
