  1. Does anybody have any idea what happened to Canady? He played in the first, but we didn't see him after that and Palmo moved into his spot. None of the people I was with could see him on the bench so we were left to assume that he got hurt.

BTW, the penalty on Palmo for playing without a helmet was one of the worst calls I have ever seen.

On the screen it showed #22 on the bench in the 3rd period.

Schmidt make a bad call, noooo, it can't be...

That was one of many bad calls. I think Blais shoud protest Schmidt reffing any more of UND games. Bring on Goddard...

  2. Some seem to think we need to keep coming back and giving Josh another chance, for what reason I don't know. Josh down right sucks. When I heard that Brandt was sick I said oh we will lose for sure tonight.

There isn't any reason why we shouldn't have two goalies like Maine since I feel we are a better more storied program than Maine...

  3. As Sioux fans we can relate. Chris I hope you are having fun at UAA. :(

I am sure a few Sioux players will greet him next season.

As for Welch, I was kind of pulling for that kid. I guess Dan can go to the WHL and play Junior hockey or sign a free agent contract. I wish him well. I think UofM will be able to fill his roster spot with a young freshman.

  4. Exciting game. I thought the guys looked gased in the third period.

I think UND showed that it can play with a lot of grit.

    Interesting night.

    Providence beat Maine.

    SCCC beat the Gophers

    UND and C.C. tied...

  5. My final point is the entire upper midwest had a racist attitude and outlook towards Native Americans. UND could do their part by eliminating the logo.

Whew, I am glad this is your final point. And no the UND FIGHTING SIOIUX LOGO is going no where, except maybe to the Final Five and the Frozen Four...

  6. PCM:

One Harris poll by itself can not be conclusive. To compare that with Johnson's Senate race where countless polls were made at various time points is like you have said before comparing apples and oranges.

Oh, I know that senate race, the one where voter fraud ran rampid...

  7. Actually, if I flamed you, THEN it would have been taking the bait. I was just commenting on the fact that I am not sure what you have been seeing to make such a comment.

Yes Brodeur is going to Wisconsin. I just meant that obviously Blais is looking around.

I also have to kind of cackle at your remark about watching a little of the Gopher game today and not being impressed with the goaltending. Weber was voted the tourney's outstanding player and stopped 29 of 30 shots in that game. You must have some pretty high standards if that isn't impressive.

Then again, I had read some of your old columns on the "Unvarnished Truth" long ago so I know better than to take your hockey "analysis" too seriously. :p???

I am just having fun... I have a lot of respect for the Gopher program...

  8. Goon,

I realize you are a Sioux fan and are gonna make remarks (fair or not) that are mostly anti-Gopher but how can you say the Gophers have goaltending issues with the way Weber has played this year? I don't know what games you have been watching but they obviously haven't been Gopher games to make a rather uninformed remark. Weber has been playing very good. A GAA of barely above 2 and and save % a little under 92% is hardly a "problem". Both his non-conference and his conference stats are very good.

As for the Sioux goaltending, it sounds as if Blais recognizes that it is a big weakness as it sounds like they have been recruiting goalies to some degree (if the stuff about Brodeur was accurate a while ago). I am sure he'll address it in some fashion.

Hammy I have to admit I was fishing. (To take a page from some one elses book). Actually I have only seen a few games of the Gophers this season because of the FSN debacle and our team having too many home games back to back.

Add to the mix I was watching Vikings football and turned the channel to Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey, what I saw from the Gophers in net I wasn't impressed, mind you that doesn't mean I don't think the Gophers aren't a good team. Just saying I am not all that impressed with the Goaltending. Maybe I will change my tune after the UofM and UND series.

Also, notice I bascially the same problems young inexperienced goal tenders. Your goal tenders, however, may be better. I think JJ is no better than Sievebeida or Jake.

Isn't Bordeur going to Wisconsin, that is what I gathered from that.

Here is my next question say Blaiser gets a top goalie like Brodeur. That brings up another dilema, we have 4 goalies none of them are what I would consider good or even adequate. He has some choices to make.

If he cuts Josh he is going to say hey I got you out of Juniors mid season. Now your not good enough to play for UND. That sends a message to other schools.

If Brandt has the documented attitude problems that others have talked about, fine we cut our losses with him to. Its easier to cut a kid with a tude. However, then we burn out bridges with the Northern Kids.

From what I read and hear about Lane, I am not sure he will be able to be a consistant contributer. Besides there are better prospects out there. His numbers are that great.

Ranfranz, what I saw of him, wasn't too bad. Cansius is different than UMD, UofM or other WCHA teams for that matter.

Lastly, Sofie... You cut the kid with the great attitude.

Blais has some tough decisions to make this year.

I have a bad taste in my mouth after this past weekend.

  9. I think both of the starters, Siembida and Brandt, could be great goaltenders. However, I think they don't work on the finer points of their position. I'd like to see a goalie coach brought in to work with netminders and help them achieve their potential. The position is just too damn important to leave it to guys who have never played the position. No offense to Blais or his current coaching staff, but we really need somebody to show these guys how to excel in their jobs.

I think your right, it seems like Brandt is a head case in the fact he feels a lot of self importance and that Josh is shell shocked from last season.

A good goalie coach could really get on Josh and have him stand up in the net. Heck I could score 50 goals a year if face a goalie every game that flops around like that all of the time...

  10. Goon - I would be up for it. Unfortunately my wife has scheduled us for something during the Saturday MN-UND game in January. ??? Pops and I should be going to the Friday game, maybe then? I know he got a kick out of Murph during the Frozen Four. :)

Maybe try something in St. Paul before during the Final Five? Or, better yet, a POI - Sioux Sports.com hockey game. The ultimate grudge match. :p

I would like to see a golf tourney with some of the WCHA fans in MPLS one summer.

Yesterday quite a few of us from BSU and a few UND fans got together, this past weekend. It was fun.

Its kind of funny when you start putting the handles with the names.

  11. It has been a know fact that UND's goal tending sucks. At the present our goal tenders make Hauser look good. (thats like saying Clinton made Nixion look presidential) I think Blais has no alternative to pull the pin on the two sophmore busts in net. Josh is god awful and Brandt must be in the dog house. Someone give me a reason why they are here next season. I don't want to hear the Gopher Fans say because he are obligated to stick with them for four years.

Here is the problem, Sedieve isn't that good, nor do I feel he will be any better than the two goaltenders we have now. I think we pre-maturely offer the central kid a scholarship without seeing what he did this past season Phil Lamaroux, now we are stuck with two more goalies. I am sure we can find a good tender in B.C. or somewhere out west.

I think it is time to flush Brandt and Siembedia down the river. Is it time to move on and find a new tender. I say cut them and bring in three new goalies next season.

Why isn't UND trying to get a good goaltender like a Bruckler or Jensen or a Dubbie. I have a hard time believeing UND a top flight program can't land a top recruit to play goal for us (no surgar coating UND is a top program no matter what other say)...

I would like to see a nice sized tender with some ability, no more midgets. Why do we insist on getting these itty bitty goal tenders that do not cover enough of the net. Second since ours thinks he needs to lay on the ice, he covers less of the net.

I know the first name to come up is going to be Karl G, he was a luxurary, an enigma, a once in a life time thing. We won't win a title with the goal tending we have now. The sad part is they aren't fit to carry Houser's jock and that isn't saying much...

Give me one more reason why we keep coming back with Sievebieda?

Why is Jake not playing. He seems to be better than Josh. Is Blais affraid to admit both are a bust? Even All-American Coaches make mistakes. UofM has basically the same problems right now. But even their sieves are better than ours...

  12. Contact 1440 and let them know how you feel. All or Nothing as Pa and Dupay have asked us to do.

I called and said "nothing" the gal laughed and said she would put me down for dropping them. ???

I am not for dropping them because they really get my blood boiling. I actually would rather listen to them than Eddie the BLOW Hard Schultz...

  13. If UND ever plays bemidji st on tv again i suggest not putting the mic on bemidji's coach ??? Finally, have the cameramen practice following the puck with their cameras, it will greatly increase the quality of the broadcast.

Hey could you fill us in on what you mean... Did Tom do some swearing?

  14. To expand on hrkac's comments - I've heard them the past few weeks and the spend two hours concocting schemes to get UND fans riled up. Don't read into it too much.

Dubay went fishing and caught himself a Goon! ???

    As for Happy........I don't know.

As far as Minnesotas fan base growing. I have one thing to say "Rookies". UND has gone through the same thing this year, and years in the past.

I think it would be interesting to have a UofM and UND fan mixer sometime. Maybe some of the guys like happy would show his face. Yesterday we met with some BSU fans before the game and it was a blast. I guess a couple of weeks before they met some of the UMD fans at Grandmas...

  15. I'm hoping the series against the Gophers will shut them up about UND's easy schedule. Of course, then we'll have to endure Sid Hartman's rants about how DII schools with DI hockey have an unfair advantage and Happy's rants about 25-year-old Canadians.

Let's just let the guys who play the games settle it on the ice.

Hey just a question do we have anyone on UND team that is 25?

  16. I swear the Guy on KFAN Radio is Happy from USCHO. DA and PA or what ever the hell their names are.

I had the misfortune of listening to the KFAN between the hours of 1100 and 1200 and at the end of the show they have Rube Rant. I have only listened to this show maybe two times but some Rube from MSP calls in and said once UND gets into the second part of the season there will be no Canisus to play and that they will be a medicre team probably middle of the pack of bottom of the league.

Are people really that stupid? Mediocre teams do not go 16-1-1 to start the season no matter who they play. If UND schedule is so bad how come MSU-Mankato beat both C.C. and UofM.

For christ sakes what are they teaching these people/rubes in school I am dissappointed UND hasn't got to play UAH two times. Are we to believe that UAH is better than Canisus. And do show me some stupid strenght of schedule right now it means nothing till the end of the season...

When will UND finally get some respect, I am not even saying we deserve to be number one. But work with me here. The UND team that got beat by UofM 6 out of 7 times was really young and UND gave the Gophers all they could handle. In Retrospect UND could have very well went 3/7 or 4/7 against the Gophers so, the argument that UND isn't very good isn't very accurate. UND hung tough with a team that was loaded with Upper Classmen. Same with C.C. we split with them and almost came back and won the second game against the Tigers in World Arena. I think UND is better this year.

So are UND a fluke I don't think so. Bring on the second half of the season.

Oh by the way. Has anyone ever met Happy? Flame away...

Oh yeah Merry X-mas and Happy New Year...

  17. Notice at the end of the box score that Matt Green got a 10 minute misconduct...

    December 26, 2002

SYDNEY, Nova Scotia - The United States opened the 2003 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship with a 5-1 loss here tonight against defending gold medalist Russia (1-0-0). Forward Alexander Ovechkin registered a hat trick less than midway through the game to pace Russia, which never trailed.

Russia opened scoring in the first period while skating with three seconds remaining on a power play. Ovechkin one-timed a shot into the top of the net on a cross-ice pass to give Russia a 1-0 lead 16:20 into the game. Russia then went up 2-0 on a wrist shot by Ovechkin past the glove hand of U.S. goaltender James Howard (Ogdensburg, N.Y./University of Maine) with just :11 remaining in the period.

The United States dominated play in the early minutes of the second period and broke through in the scoring column when forward Patrick O'Sullivan (Sterling Heights, Mich./Mississauga Ice Dogs) snapped a shot above the glove hand of Russian goaltender Andrei Medvedev at 2:44. Defenseman Ryan Whitney (Scituate, Mass./Boston University) was credited with an assist on the play. Russia answered to go up 3-1 after defenseman Kirill Koltsov accepted a pass on a breakaway and deked Howard before depositing the puck in the lower right corner of the net on a short-handed marker at 7:17. Russia took a 4-1 advantage as Ovechkin was sitting on the left-side doorstep and one-timed a pass by team captain Yuri Trubachev from across the crease.

In the final frame, Russia extended its lead to 5-1 at 7:06 on a breakaway goal when Trubachev scored through the five-hole of U.S. goaltender Bob Goepfert (Kings Park, N.Y./Providence College), who entered the game in the second period. O'Sullivan and Ovechkin were named the players of the game for their respective teams.

The United States (0-1-0) next faces Switzerland (1-0-0) in the second game of the preliminary round for both teams. The game can be heard live at www.usahockey.com. Switzerland defeated Belarus (0-1-0) earlier today, 4-2. In other action, Finland (1-0-0) downed Germany (0-1-0) by a score of 4-0. Host Canada and Sweden play later tonight.

  18. From the WSJWhen Mr. Engelstad died of lung cancer last month, protesters thought they saw a glimmer of hope and renewed their call for a name-change. But the alumni office has been flooded with letters demanding that the name stay exactly as it is. "Since Ralph's passing, we've been overwhelmed," said Tim O'Keefe, who heads up the office. He believes that about 90% of the school's graduates feel the name is associated "with character, excellence and pride." Moreover, he thinks the issue might have died with Mr. Engelstad. The protesters "just lost their lightning rod." For the time being, at least, Mr. Engelstad's convictions will be honored.

I think this paragraph speaks volumes, its very profound? I sure that JBB, Pucker, "Lil" Johnny Hoff, Vivian Nelson, Glenda Misken (Owner of the ND racism site), SDSU fan and some of the other Rubes will read this and just reject it because it fails to met their agenda. I mean If the article isn't written on The New York Times or the Washington Compost, they reject it and call it wrong.

think the article is great and long over due. I am sure the minute Mr Englestad died a lot of the P.C. Nazis were saying oh now is a great opportunity to change the name. Boy are they mistaken. I encourage UND alumni and UND students to fight them every step of the way. I sure as hell will every chance I get.

On the Barnes and noble issue, the Management at Barnes and Nobel would be stupid if they decided to pull the Fighting Sioux merchandise, UND Fighting Sioux Merchandise and gear brings in 100,000.00 I know if I was managing the place I would definately not take these activists advice.
