Yep I’ve said they canned the wrong guy. Should have been the GM. Hak didn’t have a lot to work with

I agree @sioux rube. I laughed when I read this: "pretty significant players" The Kraken did have very many significant players.

  2. The Kraken players denied this report

“Zero players issued any ultimatums of any kind regarding the coach – that I can assure you. That’s not what those meetings are really about…No one sits there asking them ‘What did you think of the coach?’” (from ‘Kraken ‘extremely disappointed’ in report that players demanded Dave Hakstol’s firing’, Seattle Times, May 1, 2024)

The coaches also thought that neutral site regionals and 3x3 overtime were good ideas. So maybe their ideas shouldn't be rubber stamped.

Here's the story from last spring. There's not a lot of interest in moving hockey to the Summit.

The Summit's commissioner, notably, is Josh Fenton, who served as the NCHC's leader from its inception until the summer of 2022. Former St. Cloud State athletic director Heather Weems just completed her first year as Fenton's replacement.

Although a couple of NCHC teams backed the idea of moving under the Summit's umbrella, others balked and it does not appear there's a large enough consensus to make such a move at this time.

A major concern is that hockey will be an afterthought in Summit League, where the majority of full members don't sponsor the sport. That could especially be the case if Fenton ever leaves for another job.

Big Ten hockey members have dealt with this since its inception in 2013-14, expressing frustration in the league's lack of hockey promotion outside of the playing season.

The word coming from the Kraken front office (supposedly) may be true or it may be a cover story; people here will never know the full scoop unless they have a direct line to their GM. It's always wise to maintain a healthy dose of skepticism anytime information comes from a corporate mouthpiece.

It would be nice to know which players said that.

Given that the NCHC talks are happening at the same time as the Midco/CCHA negotiations, I'm guessing all the cards are on the table.  Just a guess, but Midco will probably know what's happening with UST/CCHA and Summit League hockey before a Midco/CCHA deal is signed.

The NCHC hockey schools could still put a cubbosh on the idea of Summit League hockey, as they did last summer.

The last time this subject came up, the Hockey coaches were against it. So, it may not happen.

At the time, Denver Post reported the reason for Gwoz's firing was both lack of postseason success (5 first round losses in 6 season despite 12 consecutive 20+ win seasons) and inability to reach an agreement on an extension.

His firing was suspicious at best, if you take the line that Mike Chambers went with.

If Gwozdecky’s program was not meeting the DU athletic department’s expectations, she should make that case. If the administration doesn’t think the coach is worth whatever salary he was seeking in a new contract, it can defend that choice also. (It should be noted that Gwozdecky’s base salary of $221,000 annually places him well below the median for NCAA hockey coaches, according to data reviewed for us by Dan Fulks, director of the accounting program at Transylvania University, and an NCAA consultant.)

Sickies was a huge loss. You can look no further than to St Paul for the reason why.

I love Bernie's, but I miss Sickies Garage, I eat at the one in Fargo, when I get a chance.

  9. In Greater Grand Forks, 20 restaurant closures over past three years, but statistics don't indicate trouble.

A number of local restaurants haven’t been so fortunate. Since the spring of 2021, as many as 20 – and possibly more – restaurants have closed in Greater Grand Forks, including the March shuttering of the trendy Vinyl Taco on South Columbia Road.

Vinyl Taco’s closure came suddenly. It was open to customers in the first days of March, but by March 7, a sign on the door offered a blunt one-word statement: “Closed.”

Judging by other recent closures, Vinyl Taco’s demise shouldn’t necessarily be surprising. Others include Mama Maria’s (March 2021), East Grand Forks Burger King (2021), Sickies (August 2021), Scotty’s Deli (January 2022), HuHot (January 2022), Wild Bill’s Sports Saloon (May 2022), Denny’s (March 2022), Joe’s Diner (September 2022), Famous Dave’s (February 2023), Big Foot Barbecue (May 2023), Pita Pit (May 2023), Grand Forks CherryBerry (July 2023), Rhombus Guys Brewing Company taproom (July 2023), Burger King on Gateway (2023), Red Shed Smokehouse (September 2023), Boardwalk Bar and Grill (January 2024), Mo’s Cafe (2024) and La Cantina (spring 2024).
