Have you been to downtown Minneapolis lately? Cops everywhere!! Also, there are tons of hotels downtown. Many of them that are connected by the skyway so you don't even need to go outside!!
-
Location is great...what are you talking about??!! 4 schools are within 6 hours of Minneapolis. Plus, the Target Center is right downtown. Plenty places to stay/eat/etc. The one thing that you could say wasn't ideal is the facility. Yeah, they had hockey there before (Final 5, state tourbnament) and it wasn't great. But they are going to renovate the place. I would assume that part of the renovation is to make it better for hockey. True ht X would have been the best location, But I think with these renovations taking place, it will still be good.

In the eyes of the NCAA, the issue is resolved. They have the signed settlement. Keep the name, deal with the sanctions. NOTHING is going to change their miand or get them to back down.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8rwPovyR9HY Is that what you really want from all fo us?!!
-
Um...can you repeat the part of the stuff where you said all about the things??!
-
We all wanted to keep the name initially when this all came out. We wanted the tribes to give their approval. They did not. So as a result we have to retire the name as per the settlement. Everything changes after the deadline was passed. After November 30th 2010, there was no way to keep the name without being sanctioned by the NCAA. They have a legally binding settlement. So the reason our tune has changed is before November 30th, 2010 there was still a chance to save the name with tribal approval. After the deadline the game changed. It was either change it or you are santioned.

Dave, Fetch....you paying attention to this? By the way, we are still witing for PROOF and FACTS that the NCAA will back down on their posotion and take us off sanctions if we keep the name. What indications do you have that they will do that? Still waiting.........
-
When people make claims about how the NCAA is going to back down on the sanctions, that we aren't going to lose recruits, that schools that say they won't play us will "wise up" and start to schedule us, and that our membership in the Big Sky is not in jeopardy, those of us who know the FACTS have to come on here and educate the poster and those reading it about the truth. When we hear flat out LIES about the issue, we call them out. Sorry you take offense to it. But if you are going to give FALSE information about the issue, prepare to be corrected.
-
Of course Fetch would bring up an article that is factual inaccurate!! This is right up his alley!!!
-
We can debate the Big Sky issue all we want. The FACT that Minnesota, Wisconsin, SDSU, Iowa and an evergrowing list of schools that will not play us is REAL. UND CANNOT host NCAA playoff games. These are not scare tactics. The NCAA is not against the ropes. They have already said that a state law means nothing to them. Remember the meeing in Indianapolis last summer? They have a signed settlement. They are not backing down. If you can provide proof that the NCAA will back down on their policy, I am all ears. Let's hear em!! Sorry buddy, I will listen to the coaches and hear what they have to say about how having the "Sanctioned" stigma on the University has affected recruiting and how it will hurt their respective teams over your opinion any day. Sorry, I think they know their team and how their recruiting works better than you pal. I have lived in Grand Forks my entire life. I am proud of the Fighting Sioux nickname. But the UNIVERSITY and its teams are more important to the fans than the name and logo.
-
If there is even a chance the Big Sky could kick us out because of the issue, it is not worth it. If they kick us out, that's it. No league is going to want a team that was kicked out of their conference. NO ONE!! And Minnesota and Wisconsin willl not play us in any sport. And yes that includes hockey.
-
Unfortunately we are beyond the point where tribal approval will get us anywhere with the NCAA. Yes, the Spirit Lake Tribe was late to the party granting us approval, but in the eyes of the NCAA, that doesn't matter. They have the signed settlement agreement that says we need both tribes approval. Is it worng...YES. Is the NCAA overeaching their power, Absolutely. But its their club and if we want to be in it, we have to follow by their rules. Its a crappy situation, but that is our only option for college sports.
-
There was a process that schools with native american names had to follow in order to get approval from the NCAA. Florida State followed that process. UND did not follow the process because they could not get immediate approval from Spirit Lake. So they sues and settled. They agreed to get 2 tribal approvals. they failed to do so. So you can say that it is hypocritical for the NCAA to allow Fla. St to keep their name and UND cannot. But they followed the rules and guildlines set forth by the NCAA. We did not.
-
Of course its not fair. Spirit Lake Tribe voted to approve the name. But we are under sanctions because we didn't get approval from 2 tribes. Is it fair that Fla. St. only needed approval from 1 tribe, no. Is it fair that we are inecitably going to have to change our name while other schools with native american names get to keep theirs, no. But guess what, life's not fair. We keep the name, we live with the consequences. We retire it, we can move on. 5 years from now we will all see that this was the right thing to do. Sometimes you have to get the chip off your shoulder and accept the inevitable. You will be much better off.
-
Fetch, we are still waiting to hear how keeping the name and being sanctioned by the NCAA, not hosting playoff games, and schools refusing to play us is a good thing. Yes we know that you want to keep the name, but sometimes you have to look at the consequesnces of your actions. Please explain how keeping the name and suffereing the known consequences is going to be a good thing for UND and its athletic teams? Still waiting.....
-
Watchmaker49 is a moron. Ok, sue me
-
We are not making up these horror stories. The sanctions are real. no home playoff games, schools not playing with us....those are not just stories, that is real life!
-
THE most proposterous statement that I think I have ever heard!!! So you would rather be known as the Fighting Sioux and have UND not be succesful in every sport they play in. Are you even a fan of the teams and atheletes that compete at UND? Or are you just a fan of wearing your Sioux merchandise you buy at the Siouxshop?
-
There are other consequences that we can debate till the cows come home, but do you really think not being able to host a playoff game is not going to drastically damage UND and its teams? How many FCS.D1-AA Champions have played 3 road games en route to a National Championship. ZERO!!! So you are basically saying that Keeping the name is more important than ever winning a National Championship in football. Maybe you can live with that, but I doubt the players and coaches on the football team would share the same sentiment!!
-
Let's just say the NO vote wins. what is the next step then? ND lawmakers take the results to the NCAA and what are they going to say? "Ok, that's fine, but you will have to live under the sanctions." Is this really what NO voters want? The NCAA is not going to budge on their policy. We are all still waiting to hear from Dave, Fetch, and the rest how playing under the santions is going to be good for UND and is "the right thing to do."
-
If this vote is held in 2005 immediately following the NCAA's initial ruling, I think that over 95% of the people on this site would be voting to keep the name. You know this. We all agree that it is wrong that the NCAA has forced it to come to this. All of us voting YES love the Fighting Sioux name and hate to see it go. But what has been said a million times before, the sanctions will destroy UND's atheltic department.

Calvary.....I kinda like that. Not a big fan of using "Roughriders." I don't think any college has "Calvary" as a nickname. I like the idea of our new name to be unique, something that stands out from the rest.
