  1. Well, I know this is high school, but Fargo South's swim team one-upped GFRR's hockey team. They didn't bleach their hair. They all got mohawks and dyed them blue. Seriously. How proud are their parents?
  2. BENCH JPL!!!! Walski's numbers are better!
  3. Old Time Hockey Maybe I was harsh in saying that the UND offense garnered an F. However, wracking my brain I can only improve it to a C- at best. The ONLY reason BSU didn't get an A offensively is because they didn't score. Had they scored, A+ all the way. Scoring was the ONLY missing piece to BSU today. AZ- I got to try out the rig she uses to play hockey. I'll try to describe it as best I can: All of the kids involved have mobility issues. They either have severely limited or no use of their legs at all. They are strapped into a metal framed sled like device that looks similar to a sled you use for sledding down hills with a plastic seat on it and two runners on the bottom along the centerline. The back runner, situated under the plastic seat, looks a lot like a large two-bladed hockey skate. The front one looks like a U-shaped extension to the sled frame itself that has no skate blade to facilitate ease of turning. Propulsion is done by using special short hockey sticks. The butt end of each stick has metal tynes on them that can be used to grip the ice and you push yourself along and turn much like you turn a kayak. Here's a website that shows a mockup and a hockey player on it. However, the player situated on the sled in the picture is FAR more capable than the kids I played with today. All I can say was...it was SUPER fun. http://www.skatetown-roseville.com/sled/sledhockey.html
  4. He did.. several times. I didn't get to watch the third period so I missed the goal. Here are my thoughts on the first two periods: BSU: Offense: B+ They didn't get many opportunities and they didn't score, but they were doing everything short of scoring with what little they got. I thought they played really well the first two periods. Defense: A+ They played really well and stayed out of the box in doing so. Goaltending: A+ Who is this guy? He played VERY VERY well. Apparently, he didn't disappoint either in the third. Sioux: Offense: F Sorry. Yeah, BSU was playing good D and their goalie was good. Yeah, they outshot the Beavers. But they had something like 3 real chances (if that) for the first two periods. IF they were really buzzing, they would have had more. Sorry. Offense sucked the first two periods. Defense: A+ Listening to the postgame wrapup, we held the Beavers to 13 SOG. To me, that's just great D. Goaltending: A+ I don't know if Walski outperformed the BSU netminder because he only faced 13 shots, but judging by the first two periods, BSU had WAY more scoring chances than the Sioux did DESPITE the Sioux's shot advantage. We played like crap offensively the first two periods. I left to go help a friend whose daughter has Spina Bifida play hockey and missed the third. I harbor NO regrets in leaving the game. I had fun helping her play hockey. I obviously missed NOTHING. It's easy to say that the Beavers played very well, but I have to say this is one of the more weaker wins we've had this season. Not the weakest, but weak nonetheless. Alas, though, a win is a win.
  5. My perspective on the replay was the same until after VV went down. He was slow to get up (I wonder if he was trying to draw a penalty?) and was slow getting out of the crease. The controversy lies in the position of VV's skate when the puck arrives. He was not completely out of the crease when the puck entered the crease. His skate was on the crease line when it entered the goal. Campion must have thought that it was enough to warrant incidental contact negation of the goal. It wasn't blatent BS, but it still was the call that was made. I hate to say this, but if that was the case, then Campion made the call according to the rule book. I thought it was a goal too. THe worst one I have seen of this was in the NHL. It was a few weeks back in the Ducks-Red Wings game. Holmstrom was screening Giguere and skates across the crease (from Giguere's right to left) to facilitate a shot on goal by Lidstrom. He was briefly in the crease but was clearly out of the crease before the puck reached the crease. The problem is, Giguere went right to left and RAN INTO HOLMSTROM. The puck goes in, the official waves off the goal and the Red Wings lose. Which brings me to the JPL tip of the week: If you are being screened and nothing is being done about the person screening you. If the screener is right on the edge of the crease, JPL... RUN INTO HIM! That way the ensuing goal will be waved off due to "incidental contact with the goaltender."
  6. Blood's game may not have been a stay at home type in juniors and high school, but that is yet to be determined at the college level. Some D-men's games don't translate the same from juniors or high school to college.
  7. I was keyed up on two things: 1. When the Gophers are winning and playing well, Masucko has more time to comment on how the refs are jobbing the Gophers. Wheeler's penalty late in the third was a great example. It was an overt hold on Wheeler that elicited an "Oooooh" from Masucko. Woog was able to tone it down a bit. 2. Speaking of the Wheeler penalty, UW had no drive at all to win the game. They played well ONLY after UMN scored. Once they tied the game, they coasted. For a playoff team (at least one on the bubble) this UW team is awful. They may be the worst playoff team in the WCHA. Gosh, Kangas looked spotty (3 of 4 UW goals were weak IMO). Connelly only gave up one weak goal (White's goal) but I wasn't really impressed with him either.
  8. Offensively at defense you mean. I can't remember the last time Minnesota was known for their defensive game. I do believe Minnesota will be much better next year. I wouldn't be surprised if they finished in the top3 of the WCHA. Ness and Lofquist's defensive abilities will be tested. Their offense (especially Ness') will be unquestionably sound.
  9. ARC is the Association for Retarded Citizens.
  10. I don't think Turris is the best offensive player in college hockey but not because he isn't capable of it or hasn't the talent for it. I think Turris' offensive potential is hindered by the style of hockey UW employs. I really think that if Turris went to UMN or UND, he would definitely be among the top scorers in the NCAA. As for Wheeler, I think he can be an impact player in the NHL, but I think it will be in a capacity that will have Phoenix fans (and Gretzky) disappointed that they wasted a #5 overall pick to get. I think he can be a solid 3rd line Center or, at best, a 2nd line center. I do think he will see spot time on the first line being the grit to the scoring line, but I don't think he'll ever be a goal scorer in the NHL. Turris, on the other hand, will explode offensively once he gets away from the defense only offense UW uses.
  11. I too agree. Sticking up for your teammates has become a black mark on this program. 2.5 times (Testuide/Radke counting as the .5) now it has been a result of a cheap shot by the other team. The third time (Radke/Vossberg) it is because the officials don't know their head from a dung pit. I have nothing against ARC, but we should really stop contracting out to them for our officials.
  12. I'd like to make the journey up to the Ralph to show my friend and his two kids a good old fashion hockey game with goals, saves, and protesters! If anyone can help me out (I need 3 more than I need 4, but I can take 4 tickets if unable to break up a pack of 4) I'd be much appreciated. I'm not rich, but I'd be willing to pay a fair price for the tickets. PM me or email me at dlevitt7@yahoo.com THANKS!
  13. The question I have is that now Radke has 2 DQs, both for fighting, what happens if he should drop the gloves against SCSU?
  14. Watched the Blues vs. Chicago game tonight on Vs. (well, 2nd and 3rd periods anyways). Chicago wasn't sharp at all. REALLY bad passing. HORRIBLE discipline. Backes got pummeled into the boards from behind by Ruutu. As good as this Hawks team could be, they aren't there yet.
  15. I'm not sure that will be the case. The big time scrappers are Radke, Kaip, and Malone (is turning into one anyways). All three have had DQs assessed against them. So, unless Jones (whose mean streak has REALLY cooled off), Finley (whom I'm one of a few who think losing Finley for a game would be detrimental), or someone else (Davidson?) drops the gloves, I don't think there will be much fighting anymore. We all know how much discipline Hakstol has after the Bina hit. Greene was out on the ice when it happened and Hak had Greene so under control that Paukovich wasn't touched the remainder of the game. We all know how much discipline Kaip has after last season where he allowed himself to get mauled by another player because Hak wouldn't allow him to go after fighting a UAA player. The only wild card is Radke because he plays with so much emotion. I am optimistic though. He has been playing a LOT better as of late.
  16. This doesn't surprise me. Ottawa started but wouldn't give him a fair shake. He's not a Toews or Kane or Crosby or whatever who can simply walk into the NHL and simply light it up. His rep for not having much of a defensive game is also problematic. Too bad for Bo though. It would have been nice to see a team actually give him a shot for a full season.
  17. Thanks for correcting me on that. I knew it wasn't at the REA because he had to go to one of the corners or the end boards to get to the locker room. I had thought that he didn't play. Thanks again.
  18. You're right. So far Finley hasn't been as much of a menace on the blue line as Greene and Smaby were and you can tell it easily- by looking at the penalty minutes. Smaby and Greene spent a TON of time in the penalty box. Sure, Finley got beat a few times. Gosh, so did Greene and Smaby and Commodore and so on. All big defensemen can be beat by speedy small forwards. It's rare to see otherwise. However, Finley has played better this season than last season and last season was better than his freshman campaign. He's adding offense to the team, notching 4 goals this year (which is GOOD for a defensive defenseman). Let's face it. If Finley went for the big hit all the time, two things would happen: 1. He'd get burned by the smaller player because in order to get big hits you have to commit to it. 2. He'd spend all of his time in the penalty box. Greene was so oft penalized that, at one point, Blais (IIRC) told him that if he was to get one more penalty, he'd be DONE FOR THE GAME. He got a 2 minute minor for roughing and promptly skated off the ice to the locker room. The official (don't recall who) made Blais bring Greene back out long enough to serve his penalty. He did and Greene didn't play the rest of the game. Finley has NEVER EVER been that way on the ice. He plays defense. He's not an offensive threat really. He's not a big hitter like Greene was. He's just a good defensive defenseman. Chuck got caught up in the facts I stated above as a negative AND his draft position. After all, a first round draft pick should be much better than that. They should be automatic stars, right? Washington drafted him VERY late in the first round and promptly labelled him a project. He came to UND when he was STILL 17 years old (or a very young 18 year old). Yeah, thanks to Toews, people forgot that he accelerated his schooling because he didn't come directly from high school. IIRC, Finley wasn't even supposed to come in the year of his freshman year. He was a late signing and was brought in at practically the last minute. I don't look for a shut down defenseman. Why? Because A shut down defenseman won't cut it. I look for a good defenseman who can do well with his defensive pairing. Right now, I really believe that the Finley-Genoway pairing is the best defensive duo the Sioux have playing right now at both ends of the ice. Chuck gave his opinion. I feel he's flat out wrong. But, that's my opinion. We all know there are plenty of people who don't like Finley. I like to ask these questions to doubters: 1. How much does hype have to do with your disappointment? 2. How much does he score? Does he get a lot of assists or is his offensive presence not all that noticable? 3. How much does previous experience enter into it? 4. How much does personal feelings (first impression, hometown bias, personality of the player off ice, etc.) enter into it? Folks, first impressions mean a lot to some posters here. Finley's first few games were NOT very good as a freshman. With him being a first round draft pick, being a defensive defenseman at his size, and the history of similar types of players on paper (Greene, Smaby, etc.), I think people basically wrote him off after the first mistake he made. And, though feelings have tempered off a bit after the embarrassment that was all things SS.com related to Brian Lee (please don't tell me I drive this into the ground because let's face it, it is one of the darkest black marks this board has gone through since I've joined at least), people just can't get over the first impression. I've decided to root for every player. Do I think every player is a star? No. Are there players on the team that are underperforming? Yes, I think so. But we are a developmental step for these players. People have to understand that a good deal of what happens here affects the professional goals of these players. I'm not sure Prpich, Fabian, Schneekloth, Ullmer, Panzer, etc. would have gotten where they have without their performances at UND. And, yeah, I cited undrafted players, but it's most visible there. Right now, Washington (to the best of my knowledge) is happy with Finley's development and were genuinely disappointed when Finley didn't sign last summer. I'll take that as a step in the right direction. Especially with the Okposo situation and others.
  19. Yeah, my thoughts too. Kessler's hit on Hemsky was simply rubbing out Hemsky. Greene took Kessler out. I can't believe he didn't get more than a 5 minute... or maybe he did. The feed didn't show it.
  20. I thought we were the Halos? I don't let GPL-ers bother me that much. Good or bad season, the Gophers play a finesse game. Finesse games can be fun to watch, especially if they are playing another finesse team. UND has finessers, but they are mainly a physical team that employs somewhat of a run and gun offense. The best way to beat a finesse team is to simply not allow them to use finesse. We beat the Gophers by beating them up. When you are used to a finesse style of play and you end up playing a mucker and grinder game style, it can get frustrating to watch. I figure watching UND and UMN play for Gopher fans is a lot like how we feel watching UND play UW....but at least we do more than the trap.
  21. I don't know much about work ethic or why UND didn't pursue him, but yes, Les Reaney was definitely interested in playing for the Sioux. He had a pretty good freshman year for Niagara. Was it Niagara or Canisius that had all of the scandals with their head coaches and program in general to the point that there was even rumors of the college shutting the program down?
  22. Did you read my post before you got all excited because you got to jump all over me? Let me repeat myself: ACCORDING TO THE RADIO GUYS... I don't know what happened before Finley bumped into Rakshani but that's where it all started. Please, I'm not always right but at least read what I say before jumping on me for part of it.
  23. I just went with what the radio guys said. Radke was on top of Vossberg and there wasn't an AR or Hunt stopping the pummelling. The radio guys felt that Radke should have backed down. I agree with you, AZSioux, but TweedleDum and TweedleDeDum may do something about it.
  24. According to the radio guys, the fight started really when Manino punched Finley but I actually think the altercation started a lot like the way the Zajac altercation at Minnesota started. Finley "bumped" into Rakshani and Manino took exception, left hooked Finley and then all hell broke loose.
  25. My reasoning is two fold: 1. This is the second series in a row in which the Sioux have gotten into an altercation such as this. Shepherd and McLeod (TweedleDeeDum and TweedleDum respectively) may wish to send a message to the Sioux. 2. I didn't see the fight, but the radio guys were commenting on how Radke was still punching Vossberg while Vossberg was on the ice and defenseless. If that's the case, then the league could penalize Radke more.
