The terms of the NCAA settlement require that the logo be "retired" which means that UND would probably not be allowed to sell or license its use. Not sure if non-use of a logo would put it back in the public domain at some time.

I was thinking the same thing. "SIOUX HOCKEY" would not, in my opinion, require consent from anyone. Also, the logo may be trademarked but not necessarily components of the logo. Maybe the great artist who created the original logo wants to create a new original work in honor of the retired logo that could be used for merchandising. Set up a non-profit, proceeds go to worthy charities, those in support of the proud Sioux heritage continue to display the name. My guess is that this type of merchandise would far outsell whatever crap new name and logo the Admin comes up with.

Agreed. Plus, nothing to stop 11,000 fans from shouting "LET'S GO SIOUX, LET'S GO SIOUX". They can "retire" the nickname from the uniforms but never retire it from the hearts of the fans. As for marketing, I have no desire to ever buy anything with Roughriders, Pheasants, Force, or other BS they come up with. I have enough Sioux stuff to last me for a long, long time.

Do you really think UND is going to pay the $2M plus that it takes to strip the Ralph? No way. Even if they did, the Ralph could tell them to piss off since it is a private enterprise. What leverage does UND have? What, they gonna play their home games at Purpur Arena? I bet the Ralph stays just the way it is, emblazed in the proud tradition of the Fighting Sioux. What is lost, the chance to host a regional every 10 years? Let the NCAA keep sending it to Fort Wayne and playing in front of half empty arenas.

I hope you use your good fortune to go and improve the lives of those on the reservations that are not so lucky. Changing the name by itself will do nothing to stop the poverty, unemployment, and other issues facing native americans. What's the next step now that there are no more signs to hold or marches to organize?

Can you imagine how loud the "LET'S GO SIOUX" chant is going to be next year. Regardless of what the SBOE did, the Ralph will stay the same because UND will not come up with the cash to remove the logo's and the Ralph sure as hell isn't going to flip the bill. They won their conference (regular season) and tied Wisconsin and badly outshot them in a game in January so they are no slouch. At this time of year, you either show up to play the full 60 minutes or you go home. They lost to Brown in a three game series and did not advance to the conference tournament won by Cornell.

Amen to that. The constant bitching an moaning on this board is laughable. All these guys played hard. Thanks to all the seniors for four great years. You will all be missed and best of luck to all of of them. They respresented UND with dignity and class. A number of posters on this board need to seriously get a life. It is only a game and NO ONE feels worse then the guys who actually played in it.

OK Doubting Thomas, you really think these guys didn't have the option to go the pro route. Does it matter how much money they turned down? Four year top notch college athletes are rare in any sport. I guarantee that all of them could be making more money that what they will make next year playing for the Sioux.
