Of course most people were on board, they were erroneously misled into thinking that this law would somehow allow UND to both remain the Fighting Sioux AND would force the NCAA to allow UND to keep the name without sanctions. People (and the other legislators) trusted that Carlson had done his homework and the outcome would be favorable, and everybody got caught up in the moment. Only after the vote when the reality hit that nothing had changed with the NCAA did people start to backtrack because unlike Al the majority of people are smart enough to realize that being sanctioned by the NCAA would have a major negative impact on the University. His shortsightedness in pushing through the 'nickname law' in the 11th hour without researching what impact (none) it would have on the NCAA settlement has caused this whole fiasco, and now he needs to stay quiet and let it run its course.

I think anything Carlson says to the NDUS, his fellow constituents, or anybody else for that matter is now a moot point...almost everybody on both sides of the fence have realized that for the good of the University of North Dakota the law will have to be repealed. And looking at the way the legislators of North Dakota run their state compared to many of the other states in this region (including mine), I have no doubt they will make the right choice, in fact I'm sure they already have. I will give Carlson the benefit of the doubt and assume he proceeded with good intentions when pushing for enactment of the law, but as they say "The road to hell is paved with good intentions" and clearly he pushed this through without properly researching if enacting it would have any effect on the sanctioning by the NCAA and without regard for what it would mean to the University down the road if it had to live under that sanction cloud indefinitely, and for that I would have to label his actions irresponsible.

Forgot the University of Minnesota.

It seems to me when this was being talked about a year or 2 ago someone with knowledge of the settlement said that a bunch of the logos would have to be removed right away, some of the logos such as ones on seats would be replaced as they wear out down the road under normal wear and tear, but the Sioux heads embedded in the concourse floor could stay indefinitely. Is that correct?

From a lifelong Vikings fan, we're in trouble. We look weaker on both lines, have one proven receiver (who is prone to migraines), have unproven backups at most positions, have salary cap problems, and play in a division with: a) the best team in football b) another playoff team c) a team that could be the most improved by the end of the year. On paper the strategy against the Vikings this year looks to be block Jared Allen and stuff Peterson...I have no confidence that any receiver besides Harvin will ever require anything more than single coverage, which should put a bunch of guys in the box. Maybe McNabb can find Shiancoe and Rudolph enough to give AP some running room, if not he's going to spend a lot of time running for his life on 3rd and long. I hope they prove me wrong, but as of now it looks to me like we'll be fighting to stay out of the cellar.

Just curious, do they say 'Fighting Sioux' on them this year?
-
To play devil's advocate, having no nickname for a while could actually be a financial gain to the school. - The last year there has been a huge loading up of Fighting Sioux apparel by fans like us who want to have enough socked away to wear for years. - If the Fighting Sioux nickname is retired and no new nickname is chosen initially, there will still be jerseys for sale but they will be a combination of 'UND', interlocking 'ND', 'North Dakota', and maybe some new stuff we haven't thought of, but there will be a ton of it out there, and will probably be received better by pro-nicknamers than a new nickname would at that point. Sales of those products should be good as nobody would have a problem with any of those names/logos, even though the stands will still be filled with mostly Sioux gear. - Then if a new nickname is chosen down the road, again there will be a ton of new merchandise out there, plus all the 'no nickname' gear will still be in play because it's basically all saying UND, plus there will still be a lot of Sioux gear being worn. So between the record Sioux gear sales that are going on now, the no-nickname gear sales that would take place, then the sales of new-nickname gear, it could hypothetically make for a huge 4 or 5 years of merchandise sales for the school. That said, I would still be surprised if we didn't have a new nickname fairly quickly if we lose Fighting Sioux.
-
Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think they can without having the 'nickname law' repealed, they don't have that power. In the (highly) unlikely event that Carlson is correct and there is enough support for the law and it is NOT repealed, I think the SBHE's hands would be tied and we would be legally bound to stay the Fighting Sioux forever unless they again revisited the law and changed it down the road. But the odds of that scenario playing out now seem almost astronomical to me.

Looks like they got rid of almost all the logos...I only saw one on a duffel bag...but still a lot of the name "Sioux", probably be weeding that out soon too.

This explains it pretty well... What is the NCAA Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse? The NCAA Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse is the organization that determines whether prospective college athletes are eligible to play sports at NCAA Division I or Division II institutions. It does this by reviewing the student athlete's academic record, SAT or ACT scores, and amateur status to ensure conformity with NCAA rules.

So if I'm reading this correctly, we will be on the H & A list from tomorrow until sometime in December after the special session repeals the nickname law (probably). So by December there has to be a new nickname ready to go, does that mean they are going to start working on it now or wait until after the special session in November? The thought of coming up with a new nickname in the 11th hour of this deal scares the hell out of me.

I'm sure the CCHA and WMU were hoping that Notre Dame was going to announce their intentions this week, they've got major decisions to make and can't do much until they know which conference, if any, ND is going to commit to.

This from a Herald article in March... ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The NCAA, college athletics governing body, and UND have had a long-standing battle over the nickname and logo. The end result was that UND and the NCAA agreed to retire the nickname and logo on Aug. 15. NCAA spokesman Erik Christianson wrote in an email to The Forum that no more products with the Sioux logo and nickname will be sold on the Web site after Aug. 15. The university is authorized as part of the court settlement agreement until the deadline, which includes the use of that logo as part of the championship product, Christianson wrote. When asked if the NCAA was hypocritical for selling Fighting Sioux apparel on its Web site, Christianson wrote, It is not hypocritical it is part of the settlement. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- So apparently today is the last day, guess we'll find out tomorrow.

No kidding, somewhere between monopoly and dictatorship is more like it.

From our town's daily news flyer: This just in! Recently, both Republicans and Democrats were able to come to terms in raising the debt ceiling to remedy America's financial predicament. In other news, blood alcohol levels will be raised to solve drunk driving. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Made me laugh but sadly that's the mentality.

Thank you!

I'm pretty sure myself and at least 50,000 other people are going to be offended when the jersey with the new logo and nickname doesn't match the ones hanging in our closets, but like everyone else I'll bite my lip and support the guys representing the University of North Dakota whatever they end up being labeled.

I seem to remember someone posting a NCAA rule about that on here a while back which said schools must have one. Anybody remember where that was?

Almost any college QB can find a receiver if he has 4 seconds or more to make a read, if your defensive line can't force him to release before that time then he will pick you apart no matter how many people you drop into coverage...somebody will find a seam eventually. So if your D-line can't put pressure on, you have to send more people, it's that simple. And that means sometimes linebackers and sometimes defensive backs, which means people are going to be put on islands with one-on-one outside routes and they're going to have to hump up and cover it. I would rather have a QB running for his life and occasionally finding someone open downfield who lost his defender for a fairly large gain than watching him stand tall in the pocket for 10 seconds and hitting a RB 15 yards down field or throwing quick outs to WR because the DB's are playing 10 yards off every play...that is bad football. And in response to the next argument, if you have both defensive lineman who can't pressure the QB AND defensive backs who can't cover wideouts one-on-one...then maybe the problem is more in the recruitment than the gameplan.

Agree with that, even though the conferences would actually go from 2 to 3 (WCHA & CCHA to BTHC, NCHC, and WCHA/CCHA) it wouldn't help any new teams jump into D1 because nobody would want to "lower" themselves by taking entry-level teams. We need the WCHA and CCHA to stand on their own to insure growth in this sport.

Seriously how pathetic is Gophers football that we're actually giving the Bison a decent chance to beat them again? Granted NDSU has a decent squad right now but Minnesota is a Big 10 school, they should beat the snot out of teams like NDSU, UND, Montana and the like, but yet last year South Dakota and Northern Illinois both beat them. At Home. With almost 50,000 fans. That's terrible.

From what I saw last year it was more like Russian Roulette...5 misses for every one hit.
