  1. This is going all the way to November, I have no doubt about it, to simply think otherwise, I believe... would be folly. Here is the sequence I believe what will happen... the court will rule in May (dismissing the claims) but only after the SBoHE has met which will give them their June meeting to retire the nickname, but between now & that time the board will have issued their humble request (similar to the one in the GF herald) to the tribal council requesting their response regarding the nickname, thus by the time the June meeting comes along the tribe will respond to the SBoHE just prior to the June meeting that they will have their response by September. Thus by the October meeting we will have nearly been given all the time necessary to gain acceptance. Now will they give approval, I don't rightly know, through all of this the only thing I'm sure of anymore is that this will be unpredictible.
  2. Sica, Definitely understand the one stick- DAY-AM concern. But for the most part in Fargo we were primarily one stick with KFGO, and the way I look at it... providing UND ends up there, that there shouldn't be a lot to conflict with it, no Twins, Twolves, RHawks. So one stick on hockey nights or football Saturday's should suffice-- The problem of course is if hockey and football are scheduled at the same time. That is the only negative and that did happen, although rarely, it was nice in that instance where RFM had the additional stations to accomodate us.
  3. On the one hand its difficult to not be on probably the most recognized media in the Fargo/Moorhead are which would be RFM's. KFGO. I'm certainly dissappointed in the way they handled this. If the relationship that has existed between the station and UND in some shape or fashion for the past 17 years, meant anything to them, it should have been handled a lot better and shame on them for it. Now, this is hypothetical but I think we will get on DAY-AM, and now that I look at it, it may not be so bad. Case in point, in the comment section of in-forum on the story a NDSU, fan was cranked up about not being able to get KFGO at night where he lives, but he has always been able to get WDAY-AM, as strong of signal that KFGO has during the day, I'm ok with getting a stronger night signal with DAY-AM, because that's when hockey & basketball games are, and even some football. It may not be so bad.
  4. Do you guys even read the previous posts--what your attacking is his post that was directly related to MKSiouxs, which basically said they should get some portion of the licensing-- his response... using sarcasm. That's why I posted what I did, and that's the same reason I'm sure he posted what he did. Because the thought of that is just so ludicrous that it either illicits a response like mine, or incredibly sarcastic response like his. But the fact that you guys can't detect the saracasm is concerning.
  5. Yeah, on this one I'm definitely not going to throw any fuel on anyones fire after our recent history with the some of the players on our team-- not going to class, heck we've had 2 linebackers recently, do some aggregious things and they are no longer here. So in regards to the program to the south, it's seems to be something that many football programs around the country are having to continually deal with, unfortunately. Including us. With 90 to 100 guys in one program, any program for that matter- it lends itself to having this happen from time to time, with a few players, I know we are not immune. I do believe as a program you are charged with helping young men grow and develop- I feel at our school, we've had a good track record of coaches and staff that have done a very good job of it. (sometimes a few guys will slip through) I feel that we still have the good bunch of coaches and staff to continue to lead our players not only to be great student athletes but also good citizens, which I think is something we have over a lot of other institutions.
  6. Sharing revenue via merchandise is not a feasible solution in my book. That isn't done anywhere esle. And I know you all will mention Florida State, but I know for a fact that the Seminole Tribe receives zero $'s in regards to the nickname and logo licensing. I have a connection down there and we have had many discussions about this. And while it's not a major source of funding, every litttle dollar is important. Not to mention, why if it's a source of pride would it be expected to have to pay for it some way? Let's hope that we keep the nickname that would be great...but-- I guess you could say that I am firmly against any sort of sharing when it comes to the nickname and logo licensing. It's either a source or pride or it's not. I'm not going to pay you $$$'s in order for you to decide that you have a source of pride.
  7. Thomas can flat out play, but he was being recruited by a number of larger mid majors but broke his hand prior to his senior year, all that interest dried up except basically USD...as much as it pains me to say it--credit to them on that one. Krogman is merely servicable at the D1 level. Cain with his body and athleticism was a game changer-- Smith was a pussy, and Gentry was exactly what made the whole show go round. If they can't find something similar of a presence to Cain, where he drew a tremendous amount of respect on the interior-- that changes the way you can guard their guys out on the perimeter who's to say their guys won't play differently without Cain & Gentry around anymore? Thomas is going to lead them in scoring next year no matter what, but even he will have to work harder to get his points by not having those 2 previosly mentioned names around. I'm very interested to see what USD brings to the table next year.. imho...it may not be so rosey for the yotes.
  8. Star, Agree completely about how it could definitely adversly effect coverage of the Women's Basketball tournament, way more so than hockey. But I used hockey because it seemed I needed to use that in order to make an impact to my argument with some on here. If Disney Corp gets the rights, hockey will have obstacles but Women's Basketball might see all of it's gains in recent years go the opposite direction, my hope is not, but you're right... that is a distinct possibility.
  9. All that stuff is very cheap to broadcast. The commercial's that run during those hours are either bonussed, or at very low rates and for the advertiser. To get hockey they they have to be able to sell it to the advertiser, and they probably are going to ask that for a live broadcast game rate, increasingly the cost to the advertiser. FSN North would have most likely have to find a way to recoup it's fee that it have to pay in order to air the games. Its all about the $$$'s.
  10. There will be empty seats at the hockey regionals too, this week. Or is that just not possible, because its hockey? I hate to tell you this, but there is a reason why CBS pays just over 500 million a year to the NCAA for the broadcast rights for that tournament. It's called interest, and there is a lot of it with NCAA basketball, whether there are people in those seats watching Oakland & Pitt or not. Also, keep this in mind, this is not anti-hockey as it is a fact for the hockey only fans out there. The NCAA has an opt out with CBS this year(drop date Aug. 31st). It is no secret that Disney Corp, (ESPN & ABC) want it because they can use all their channels to cover every minute of every game of basketball, if the NCAA moves to Disney Corp, where will they put NCAA hockey? It already is getting bumped to the ESPN 360's of the world. That would not bode well for NCAA televised hockey. I guarantee just because CBS would lose basketball they would not be looking to replace it with hockey. They can tell by who is buying the advertising now that there isn't any revenue there. Look at the televised broadcasts of the regional NCAA hockey tournaments and tell me where the national sponsorship $$$'s is coming from. Then look at the basketball coverage and look at which advertisers are spending their money there. If Disney Corp gets the tournament I guarantee those sponsors are going to go to who ever has the tournament. Again this is not anti-hockey, but this is the situation that could impact hockey, and should concern hockey fans. But to point out that because you saw empty seats of the Oakland/Pitt game at the NCAA tournament is an indicator that we shouldn't pursue the Summit league is astonishingly absurd. This post has little to do with this thread but I had to respond due to Ole's comment. Ben & his wife Dawn are 2 of the nicest people you ever could meet. It's truly fantastic to see them have the success that they are enjoying right now. Ben's going to have a lot of opportunities elsewhere. I know the people of N. Iowa would love to keep him, but at the same time Ben's going to have to do what's right for his family and in the end the contracts that will be presented would provide for his family for a very long time. Whatever they choose I support, and I hope this run can continue for at least a few more games. Lastly you look and see what the mid majors have been able to accomplish during this tournament, and it gives me hope. I realize we are so far away as far as talent is concerned right now, but maybe by the time we are elgible we will be closer. All it takes is a few key pieces surrounded by a good supporting cast and you can create some special stories at the tournament. We have a long ways to go, A LONG LONG, way to go, but at least we have something to shoot for.
  11. Boy knickball, your disdain for basketball is more than apparent. What in the world did basketball ever do to you? To have you seething about it all the time. I know alot of Sioux fans and by and large most basketball fans, even though they are not the biggest hockey fans- have & take interest about in Sioux hockey, but if you ask a hockey fan about basketball, they make some remark about how they don't care about basketball, or make some dig about it to denegrate it in some way. I have a feeling you fall into that category. The fact that I proudly like and support both programs definitely puts me in the minority, and it surely has always brought the fury of the hockey only fans upon me at times in my life. Some have said that I basically have no business being a Sioux hockey fan if I like basketball too. That is the attitude that I've encountered, and it continually is getting perpetuated and pushed on this site and live and in person as well, especially now with the name and logo situation, it's as if we basketball people are to blame too. Maybe it's time we just axe basketball here at UND, it's certainly not worth the continued expense. Just think of the savings for the athletic department. Then all my hockey only friends will at least be nicer to me since I won't have basketball to cheer about anymore, and they won't have to even worry about wasting their time to make some smart-ass dig about it. Plus, then I won't have to then respond with some dig about hockey...which if I ever do- they instantly get all defensive about it. So when they tease me about basketball, I'm suppose to take it jokingly, but when I tease hockey only fans about hockey... they are allowed to get all defensive about it. I'm beginning to see how this works now. The solution to me is simple. Drop basketball at UND. It's not even worth pursuing a "one shining moment" opportunity ever.
  12. Massey, Smassy, is what I say. Hey I've been following these programs long before Coach Roebuck was coaching the reality is I think we would all like to believe that the NCC was that much better of a conference back then, but I'm not so sure. The same thing that plagues d2 basketball today, lack of speed, athleticism, and size with those attributes, probably plagued it back then we just refused to look at that way, and still refuse to. It's not like it demeans our National Titles any. Let's face it our 1st national championship was the direct result of having a 6'4 post player who had some athleticism. Heck even Northwestern had 2 of those last year. For as good as NDSU, SDSU & UND were-- Mankato, yes USD, Omaha, & N. Colorado were putrid during those years. I just think that some the players on this team would have been just fine on those teams if not more successful. Hey Richards & Jaime Pudenz are my alltime favorite players, but I don't think for a second that they would have accomplished that much more if they had been playing the last 2 years against the competition the Sioux now face.
  13. The only reason those teams appeared to be so good, was because the played so many inferior d2 teams and a few NAIA schools on their schedule. This team would have done the same thing this year and last year if they could have played those schedules, even in their championship years.
  14. Aren't you being a negative nelly Coach Daddy, Sorry to tell you this but even though this may be the worst confence in D1, I'm glad that we are out of D2, I now realize how bad that brand of basketball really was. It was terrible, and we were the best of terrible. These players have done a good job, and had they been juniors & seniors when we were still in the NCC, we would stomped everyone with these players too (some of them played as underclassmen) I honestly don't think any of our previous teams from years ago would have had anymore success than this current team now, in this situation. Because of that, I say way to go ladies! You've worked your tails off and were able to accomplish the only goal that was realistically available, and you did it emphatically. I'm not going to diminish what these players have done and sacrificed. I'm just going to congratulate them and move on. I want into a different conference in the worst way but I'm proud of these girls just as I was of our first national title team.
  15. I think we would have needed to probably have won 2 of these 3, v. Wyoming, v. Ball St, @ E. Mich & 1 of these 3 @ ASU, @ Gonzaga, @W Kent to have been considered for an NIT
  16. I think next year will actually be worse, but then again I expected we would be. The fact remains that it will only be the second year of college ball for this current redshirt freshman class, and they will have a lot of growing pains next year too. I feel we'll begin to see strides when those players are juniors and seniors. But next year most likely will be worse. Haugen has impressed, but so did Archer before he got hurt and he looked horrible to start the season. Allard may not have had his best game last night, but according to the radio, he wasn't feeling 100% as the Sioux are fighting an illness, but he's looked pretty good the last 6 games. Let's face it this class is going have a lot of peaks and valleys, lets not kid ourselves most freshman players in college do, but we notice it that much more because they take on that much larger of a role with our squad and they will continue to, for years to come.
  17. Does anyone know where Canadian star Poulin is going?
  18. The Sioux played Chicago St on Thursday Night. Left Chicago Friday morning, with their connecting flight to Newark in Detroit, Once in Detroit, the flight to Newark was cancelled, forcing the teams to stay the night in Detroit. Because of the cancelled flight the next day the only flight the teams could get into NYC or Newark was via JFK, they got into Newark on Saturday Night. Played Sunday and returned home Monday. That's the best they could possibly do, I don't think playing in this conference is cost efficient, I can't argue that...but it is what is. and it will have to do, for a while, otherwise there will pretty much be no basketball after the new year once all the other teams around the country get into conference season.
  19. This actually kind of angers me more, just for the simple fact he now gets 3, only after he takes out a Wisco player. Where was the support of the league when he lined up and ran Genoway. This again goes to show how messed up the league office really is. It's utterly shamefull. In my mind, I think it shows evidence that this league office has some preconceptions about our program, and I think it reflects in the type of officiating we get during games all the way up to the worlds largest moron, who heads up the office. He gets 3 games now, if the league is consistent he would receive 1 game (not that I believe that it should be 1 game, my opinion is that he would still be sitting due to the hit on Chay) but my whole point is that just proves what a charade this league office is when they can't even have consistency. The problem is that they continue to prove their ineptitude at the league office and with many of the officials within the league, and yet there has never been any serious repercussions for these people that continue to display this ineptitude. I Bruce M., Don A., Todd A. and others live charmed lives, because apparently they are beyond reproach, and it's this whole series of events that continue to prove it.
  20. Unbelievable Goal!!! That was awesome
  21. Ok BobIwabuccifan, explain this to me, how this goes again. And yes I actually was around and cheered for Bob when he played and even for some truly dreadful teams prior to when he played. Getting back to my question, how is UND hockey the most popular sport team in North Dakota? I just can't let you throw a blanket statement out there like that. (Yes it won a poll, conducted by SI, but you know how much credence I put in polls?) Considering very few play or even watch hockey growing up in this state, I just don't see it. Is it the most popular team in Grand Forks, yes...I'll even give you the Red River Valley. I'll grant you its recognized but most popular is a stretch. I think you place upon it too much importance without realizing what the actual sports constituincy is within the state. Is it recognizable to nearly everyone?... yes I will give you that, but that doesn't make it the most popular. Even the state of Minnesota with it being the state of hockey, if you were to go and ask every person what their favorite sport was, let alone team. I'm not sure hockey or a hockey team would win that actual poll. (maybe I'm wrong there, but you never know) What hockey does have (this is to it's credit) is very loyal and boisterous fan base that backs it, but because of this I think some hockey fans mistake this for an overwhelming ratification that hockey is so incredibly popular especially in the state. And let me just add, I love our hockey team and go to just about every game. My all time favorite Sioux Hockey player hailed from Prince Edwards Island. The SI article on the Lamouroux family was awesome and I enjoyed it, but lets not think for an instant that they would have done that story had the twins not made Team USA (which is great that they accompolished this by the way). All of the family connections to UND is part of the story---and certainly interesting to me & other Sioux fans, but it wasn't why the story was written. It would have been written had this family lived in Casper Wyoming and many of their family had gone on to great hockey accolades.
  22. I may like hockey, and I may like basketball a little bit more, but some of the people who claim that UND basketball doesn't matter and we only ever be known for hockey. That may be, but I don't think the people who post these things realize that, hockey in the state of ND, is not numero uno. I've lived and traveled to a lot of places in this state, and hockey doesn't register with most of the people in this state. For some it does but it's rare, New Rockford to Underwood- to Hatton. Bismarck & Minot- yes these places may have some hockey people but they would admit that they are greatly outnumbered by Football, Basketball and even wrestling--New Rockford & Underwood don't have wrestling but its for the example. Even more--- hockey has traditionally been the easiest ticket to get out of the the sports, (hockey&basketball) at the U of M, I know I have a sibling who went there (unfortunately), and that's suppose to be the state of hockey for cryin out loud. So thanks yzerman for your sincere disdain for UND basketball, all I can say is oh well...that's fine, but don't think for an instant that everyone in this state hangs on how our hockey program performs (I for one hopes it performs well-especially this weekend). Now granted they aren't hanging on for our basketball programs right now either, but if they ever get good- I lot of people in this state first & foremost will be interested. I can't understand if that happens with our basketball programs, why would that be a bad thing? according to some of you hockey only fans, why does it bother you so much? Your tone yzerman indicates that to be the case. Did a basketball player steal your gf, years ago or what?
  23. Great read about things are beginning to fall. http://www.cbssports.com/columns/story/129...nce-cannibalism Admittidly, I was not a believer that we would see some of these things happen but it looks like there is something that could very well occur here with some of the major conferences, which would have a trickle down effect down to a lot of schools including those in the WAC, Mountain West, & yes even the Big Sky. Hey, I just didn't see this coming. But I think we better be ready when things start happening to be pro-active as an institution.
  24. While listening to the coach's show last night. I heard Brewster take a call, the question was whether Sharkova was going to play this year. He said that she had been ruled inelgible and would not, and on a follow up question of if she would play next year, he said that didn't look like it. So I guess that pretty much answers that question, about whether she'll be a future contributor. That's tough, but it goes to show you this staff has a lot of work to do in regards to getting a lot of pieces for next year.
  25. Yes, we would be right at home in it, that's for sure, but it takes life long seasoning to not be affected by weather like that.
