  13. I think your giving way to much emphasis hockey and it's importance around the state. I'm willing to bet that kids in small town North Dakota can barely name 1 Sioux hockey player let alone any of the team. I doubt it highly that in a town like Carrington, Lakota or even Mayville (which is closer yet) very few could name UND hockey players grades k-12. Heck I doubt very few in Minot could either. No offense, but that argument that it's branded and that it's caught on to all these youngsters across the state is a bit of an exageration.
  14. It just goes to show you, at least in the eyes of big time institutions... The Wisco's, Ohio State's, Mich, Mich St of the world, we're pretty small potatos no matter how strong our program is. At least that is the perception. I look at it this way, if their starting off point really had only one dissenting voice (Maturi @ Minny) then I look for this to be a reality much sooner rather than later. It sounds if Alvarez is looking at it from a fiscal perspective... Travel Costs, TV Money, Attendance, I think it will finally presented in a way that would make sense for Minnesota and they most likely will go- There allegiances with these institutions in regards to the other sports along with the Big 10 Network, will make it a no-brainer for them. It will be a sad day because we will be left in what will be essentially the Northern Sun back when the NCC was so strong. You would much rather be in the NCC. I think the writing is on the wall, I feel that this will be a reality-- this will be the new look in college hockey in 5 to 7 years.
  15. Oh shoot--didn't realize, thanks for the heads up
  16. Hey, I didn't have a chance to listen to the Coaches Show last night - did they start talking about hockey, and if so, was Hak on, what was said? Just curious thought it might be that time of year again. Thanks
  17. It's not selling ones soul to get into the Summit League- but believe it or not there are some other student athletes on this campus, and the Summit League would open up the door for many for possible competition in future National Tournaments. My question is why would you be willing to even flirt with the possibility of leaving about 85% of our athletics programs out to dry? Maybe there is a timetable to get into the Summit, and maybe there isn't, but is that the way to approach life- without a sense of urgency, do we want to take that chance? I do not want to be a Division 1 Independant, nor do I want to be stuck in the psuedo conference purgatory known as the Great West for much longer. Oh wait, I believe the tribes could have addressed this issue 25 years ago... Where's the sense of urgency there? Now there is a sense of urgency-just like getting into the Summit. There were people protesting then. But someone will say the NCAA didn't put this issue on us- then. Well I argue we haven't been out floating in the wind as a Division 1 transition school during that time either, but the urgency of getting into the Summit is imperative for the this school, because the Big Sky is not coming to our rescue neither is anyone else. As far as the genius comments such as, it's not like it's the Big 10...well if you honestly think that is an option to wait for, I would encourage you to walk right in on the next SBHoE meeting layout your reasoning and convince them that this is what we should wait for. That statement is a dig at nearly every other sport at this University as if to say... you are simply not important, so why even place any importance on this Summit League possibility. But the costs of operating a Division 1 Independant and honestly thats pretty much what we are currently, are only going to increase.
  18. Uh the tribes, have had how many years to take a role in this issue? I'm thinking it was just a little earlier than when the NCAA got involved. What makes anyone think they will get there ducks in row to address it now. They've had more than enough time by my account, only now with a deadline in place does it matter. Move the deadline and they will move it off their agenda or at least off their priority list. The only reason that this has been a priority for some of the Standing Rock Tribe is that they realize they are about to lose say...they've had 30 plus years to weigh in---and they haven't done anything. Look at Spirit Lake for goodness sakes, they have a referendum on the matter and it still doesn't matter because the chairperson says it doesn't (or at least Chair Persons actions says it doesn't). Moving the deadline will only allow them to hmm & haw at it until the next deadline. This is how the game is played out there. I've lived next to reservations, this is how it works. For those who have fought so valiently on the reservations in support of the nickmame recently...and I stress the word recently...I appreciate it, but where were you 15 years ago, 20 years ago--I'm sorry it's a little to late, whether the deadline is moved or not, I guarantee it will not change one thing about how fast tribal government will address it, in fact I argue that it will only slow them down.
  19. It still adds up to, we can't control what other entities or institutions or fans or students do.
  20. Matt, No offense but how in the world, can the Athletic Department, or the University for that matter, say to Texas Tech, "oh by the way I know our game is coming up this week. Can we take a look at what your printing up for the game..." This simply doesn't seem feasible. So if we did that in this instance wouldn't we then have to do it where ever we played. The time involved to dedicate someone to deal with this on a game to game basis simply doesn't add up. It is horrible that this happened. Honestly, I believe Texas Tech when they said they didn't realize (it just goes to show you how silly the p.c. argument has gotten around here, because apparently it hasn't even registerred in Lubbock) --don't get me wrong, it doesn't make it right. But I can't with good conscience dump this on anyone at UND's lap--they didn't decide to print up this. Chalk it up as a bad/misguided idea by those at Texas Tech--and that's that.
  21. I think that wishing Myles Brand rot in hell is going way overboard, because you seem to think because Myles Brand is the NCAA's sole policy maker. When in fact, he is not. This whole process was created by a comittee made up of college presidents or reps of the institutions of the NCAA. To lay this completely on Myles Brand shows that you are ignorant of how the process works, and the only way to keep the nickname is to truly understand how this process played out, that way we can argue effectively against it. Why we do the things we do & say --never ceases to amaze me. Just like this year at the WCHA Final 5 when they interviewed some 10 yr old kid at intermission on the jumbo tron, and the host asked him who he thought would win & the kid responded Duluth...thus bringing a chorus of boos from not only a college age fans, but grown adults as well, I know I was sitting right there. As the host said at that time- "for those of you who would boo a 10 yr old kid...have fun in hell". Now wishing someone to hell for an offense like that is probably more appropriate. Get a grip people or at least get an understanding of who were instrumental at formulating this policy.
  22. I was listening to the morning show on 1440 this morning- and the guest host since Tim is gone pointed out some things that got me thinking. 1. He said-- and I'm paraphrasing that "with all this talk of retribution of ending Native programs, and not going to their casinos, it shows maliciousness on our part over the name. We end up just proving their point (nickname opponents)--that we are only about the name, and not in support of Native American peoples. Why is the reaction of so many -to hurt others- by so many on here and on the comments section of the gf herald website. "We can't have our nickname so I don't think they should get support of their native american programs or I'm not visiting their casinos, or I'm not donating to the athletic program now". I tend to agree this school of thought, as a--backwards and vindictive. As he stated, there was a strong majority of Native Americans on the Spirit Lake Reservation supported the nickname and by and large probably a large portion of Standing Rock's as well. Why then do we all feel necessary to hurt these people in some way by suggesting we take away programs. As he pointed out "it doesn't make a lot of sense to do so" 2. Swyg pointed out that yes the Spirit Lake Tribe voted- and yes it means something, but at the same time these tribes had 30 years to act and take a stand on this issue- sometimes when you procrastinate in life, it doesn't work out. The vote was nice, but the reality is that our institution is working against a time situation in order to find a home for some of our athletic progams- it is necessary to survive. Believe it or not, if it's not the perogative of the institutions of the Summit to wait for us while we figure it out- then that is their perogitve. You would have to believe that since the WCHA schools are not thrilled with the possibility of an unbalanced schedule ie. Bemidji, the Summit probably isn't thrilled with that possiblity either and want to get 12 teams settled as soon as they can. It shouldn't take brain surgery to figure this out. I'm not happy about losing the nickname, I don't really like the way some of the anti-nickname people went about the tactics of fighting their battle- but they were the minority--and believe it or not in our country's history sometimes the minority has won out-(like it or not). I'm ready to move forward and support our athletic programs at the University of North Dakota. regardless.
  23. Any idea where that Storusten (I don't know if thats how its spelled) kid from Pelican Rapids is going to go to school? He impressed me just a little while ago in the MN State Championship Game- I could see a kid like that quietly becoming a pretty good college player, even D1.
  24. I watched a lot of the Mankato championship game- good for them, but had the Sioux been DII this year, I don't like the way Mankato would have matched up with the Sioux. I think the Sioux would have gotten after this team. That was the big problem for the Mavericks the last couple of years. Even the announcers alluded to the fact that the region was now devoid of UND, NDSU, USD, and SDSU. Always liked Heather Johnson from Mankato- Congrats...I kind of miss playing for championships.
