You are correct Wile E. Coyote

To take flight one goes up, so hopefully our wins go up. So yeah it does make sense.

Students Spearhead Effort for Fighting Hawks Mascot
darell1976 replied to ChrisUND1's topic in UND Nickname
Cas4127: How the Bison name came about. BarnWinterSportsEngelstad: Re: Testify! DakotaOakie: it always seemed to me there was some sort of food chain upmanship going on in the Dakota universities relative to sport team nicknames. Jackrabbits --> coyotes--> Bison --> Sioux. I have no idea about the timing of all of these name adoptions but it still seems curious. The Bison / Flickertail thing (gophers anyone?) seems to corroborate the theory. Hammerhead: Also notice the NDAC mascot was "Fighting Aggies" while that other school didn't add Fighting to their mascot until the 1990s. Bison03: Re: Testify! What’s with Bissons? -
That’s why they hope someone is going to build them a 50,000 seat FBS-type stadium. Carson Wentz?
-
Adding up to 3,000 seats is huge in a dome, NDSU would love to do that. We have no need as we aren’t close to capacity at every game.
-
The goal, Herbster said, is to expand seating capacity for football games to the 12,000 to 13,000 range, an increase from the current 10,000-seat capacity. https://www.seattletimes.com/nation-world/university-of-south-dakota-moves-forward-with-dakotadome/
-
I think it’s cool the designers of your stadium opened it up to future expansion, something no other Dakota team can do with their current stadiums. You see the problem the Fargodome has with Bison fans screaming at a bigger dome. I don’t think the Alerus can get much bigger without end zone seating and as for the Yotes, didn’t they just remodel the Dakotadome?
-
Or another spin on it would be, if it’s a non hockey game and a Bison fan yells” Sioux Suck” does the FS4E fans turn to them and say “ we aren’t the Sioux anymore”?
-
Muss was good at getting offensive weapons.
-
Too bad our most outstanding QB only played one season. We need 4 years from someone like him. That 600+ yard game against Montana was awesome to witness. Plus beating them was the cherry on top.
-
I don’t care if you wear Sioux gear, but why should I get criticized for wearing Hawk gear or accepting the new name, as you can see Petey thinks I should be the new name of the mascot all because I accept the new name?
-
Hopefully our wins can take flight.

I watched a game against Mankato, I shoveled out my seat and had the best time especially with how loud the crowd was and UND kicking butt. I walked to Memorial Stadium, biked to games the location on campus was a big plus for attractiveness, when it’s 60 above and sunny you don’t want to be indoors at a game, but when it’s 15 and 40mph winds, a dome is a good thing. Both places has its plus and minus.

There are a small group of us that accepted the retirement of the old name 6 years ago because suing did nothing, the state law did nothing, the cooling off period did nothing to help with that loss. So moving on with a new name, logo, and now mascot helped with that grief. We will never forget the past, but because we accepted the new change, we get crusified on social media, in the REA (booing of the name), and on this board. It sucks for both fan bases that we can’t agree with the other side, no other school can possibly have this much division. I still wear my Sioux gear that will never change, that shouldn’t make me the bad guy. I wear Hawks gear and that shouldn’t make me the bad guy. We all cheer for UND and that should be the main point. Let’s put down people in Bison gear or Gophers gear, but not UND gear.
-
Borrow from Barry’s salary.
-
Will the name always be the Alerus or can UND buy the naming rights and call it the Hawks Nest? Or call it the Hawks Nest at the Alerus Center. I remember a naming contest for the dome which Aurora won but I guess money talks. I submitted the Sioux-per Dome, with that spelling for the contest.

I am sure Memorial never saw games with attendance close to that, that the opponent wasn’t NDSU. Potato Bowl is a big attendance getter but how about Morningside or Augustana in the cold November air blowing from the north with snow being shoveled out of the seats. You are lucky to get 5,000 for that. I loved Memorial Stadium from my first game in 1985 to my last game there in 2000, but the Alerus is a lot better to handle our climate.

Nothing makes sense to you. Must have ate a lot of paint chips as a kid.
-
That quote sounds so familiar. So GW’s nickname will be gone really soon if you look at history of nicknames.
-
I’m sure there are fans of Stanford with Indians gear refusing to wear anything with the word Cardinal on it. Wear your Sioux gear forever, no one is stopping you.
-
And vice versa, if the Fighting Sioux forever people would stop being so butt hurt and quit holding a grudge against a school that had to change the name or face sanctions and support the school whatever they are called instead of crying “I’ve stop donating because they got rid of my Fighting Sioux” think of what could be accomplished for the teams that actually wear the logo.
-
Sorry your nickname got retired over half a decade ago, but continue to cry about the new name, logo, mascot, and everyone who supports it.

Yes...have you?
