That’s a good point. I’ve also always wondered if it isn’t necessarily that the slower player is faster, but the faster player is slower with pads on. For some track athletes, their running style doesn’t lend itself to the extra weight of the helmet and pads.
-
Game speed is definitely a real thing. Depending on the defensive scheme you can get away with a slower guy that thinks quickly, knows his responsibilities like the back of his hand and is decisive. The challenge would become if the linebacker ever had to carry a TE vertically. At 4.8 or 4.9 a fast TE and a good coordinator would exploit that matchup. I watched Digger play, the fact that I was floored to hear he only ran a 4.8 speaks to how fast he was able to play the game.

To bring some actual numbers to the conversation since you can’t seem to see how wrong you are here. There are 130 FBS programs. I’ll quantify “nearly all” for you by saying top 10% is a fair definition of nearly all. So, name 13 FBS teams that had a better consecutive two QB situation than NDSU had in Wentz and Stick. Of course there are some, but not many. Here’s all the QBs that have been drafted. http://www.nfl.com/draft/history/fulldraft?type=position

Nothing tempered about being in the NFL for a decade if he’s able to do that.
-
I made a simple comment about our QB play which I didn’t think was controversial in the slightest, I made no inferences about what that meant in terms of NDSUs “powerhouse” status. You changed the goalpost not me. Youre arguing with yourself, not me.
-
You serious Clark? Duke, Daniel Jones. Memphis, Paxton Lynch.
-
This comment won’t age well. Stick has the smarts and the attitude to be a backup in the nfl for a decade.
-
He’s the one who moved them by saying western Kentucky isn’t a powerhouse. Not relevant at all to the original conversation of having great qb play for the past 6 years.
-
Why is having a conversation always someone seeking validation? Calm down. i made a comment, he called it ridiculous and was proven wrong. I dont think Western Kentucky had a guy get drafted second overall though.
-
So then after looking into and finding maybe five schools out of 130 that have had their last two QBs drafted, is it fair to say NDSU has had better QBs than nearly all of the FBS schools in the nation the last six years? My comment is mostly to the previous poster, since it seems like you are somewhat agreeing with my statement.
-
“Nearly every FBS school” you realize doesn’t mean ALL. The same Easton Stick that just beat out Cardale Jones in San Diego? Yeah, I’d take him over many P5 starters. Name the schools who have had their last two QBs drafted when you get a chance. I’ll wait.
-
Agreed, which is why until/if the structure of FBS changes, I wouldn’t advocate for a move up.
-
Name the schools that have had their last two QBs drafted. Have fun with that research, they are very few and far between.
-
I’ve never heard one single NDSU fan who knows the slightest bit about college football think we could actually compete with the blue bloods. I think they could definitely become a G5 powerhouse like a Boise State though.

Sometimes making a list like that early in the season isn’t a sincere attempt to say a guy has a legitimate chance to win the award, but more of the writer’s “tip of the cap” to a guy and a program that the writer is impressed by. So, it’s not ridiculous. NDSU, like it or not, has had better QB play than nearly every FBS school for the last 6 years and Trey looks to be continuing that trend. Laugh at that if you like, but the NFL scouts would disagree with you.

Not sure on Columbia, but here’s a link for his recruiting page. https://247sports.com/Recruitment/Trey-Lance-96865/RecruitInterests/ I’m no expert in college rankings, but it would seem to me that if Cornell and Brown offered him, academically it isn’t a stretch that Columbia could have. And certainly would be more than qualified to attend either NDSU or UND.
-
Lance is a special athlete. Frankly, I’m amazed he ended up at NDSU. After watching the Gophers against SDSU, I think he’s possibly better than anybody on the Gophers roster. We’ll see how the season plays out, but he certainly didn’t look like a freshman. Physically or mentally. *disclaimer, it was against Butler.

Because this is often a hotly debated topic, quick question as a point of clarification. What do you mean by “the field got much more competitive?”
-
Pappy 23 year, I wish.

I’m not sure why a little back and forth always leads to these types of comments. I can’t speak for others, but I don’t come here because of any insecurities or inferiority complex. You honestly don’t find it more fun and entertaining with opinions that don’t follow the party line? I stopped posting on Bisonville years ago, because it isn’t fun to have discussions if everybody agrees and anything other than the company narrative is met with insults. Personal insults. I’ll be the first here to congratulate your fans if you pull an upset this weekend. After I drink away my sorrows of course.
-
But seriously, why did you quote my post and then respond in a way that had nothing to do with my post?
-
I’m not following your meaning.

Rocky Hagar hasn’t walked the halls in 25 years, it’s a new era. If you asked guys even back when I played, 15 years ago, I’d be willing to bet only a few would have known who Rocky Hagar was. To be clear, from someone who has been on the inside of NDSU football, when we talk tradition and values and respecting the guys that came before you and laid the foundation, those conversations do not revolve around specific players in those eras or specific opponents. NDSU football minimizes the individual players and elevates the team and the preparation to win. I can’t remember a single time a coach talked about a specific former player and a specific game in NDSU lore, but we talked about the sacrifice and the tradition all the time. If I didn’t grow up an NDSU fan, Rocky Hagar would have just been a picture on the wall in the locker room to me.

I’ll click around the interwebs a bit and see what I can find.
