but how will they pay for it all? oh the humanity.... adding things when they don't have enough money!!!

I think the swanson parking area was probably the best choice... given what other options the school had. building it behind tabula would put thousands of students on the opposite side of university. that's a lot of kids crossing the street. the parking lot behind chester fritz is further away from most buildings than swanson. the dorms don't need another parking area... it's the off-campus students that need more parking. behind hyslop is further away than swanson and i'd imagine it would be difficult to build a parking ramp right next to/under columbia ave bridge. you say "with all the options" but really, swanson parking lot was probably the only good option. it's by no means farthest away from anything but gamble hall, merrifield and twamley.

it's true that the gophs would have ended up in grand forks regardless... but who they played changed when they lost to wisco. umn was #1 overall, but the loss to wisco dropped them to #2. because holy cross was ahead of bemidji state... the gophers drew the #15 overall instead of the #16 overall. the rest is history. but who knows, the beavers could have beat the gophers the way they played too.

i disagree. look at what the wild did at the beginning of last year. they were on a tear, scoring goals left and right. lemaire let them play a very offensive style until the team cooled down. last year, it didn't have the skill to keep that up all year long. but when the guys came out and were putting things in the net, lemaire had no problem playing an offensive game. this year, he will have much more scoring power to work with and the wild will play accordingly. lemaire won his championship in jersey with a bunch of guys nobody thought could do anything and a great goalie. he took a bunch of rejects a couple years ago and took them deep into the playoffs in the teams 3rd year. he, and the wild organization, has said this year things will be different. and he's shown throughout his career that if he gets enough talented scorers he will easily run an offensive minded club.

of course ndsu is the most popular school in fargo... i never said it wasn't. but by no means does it have the support of the community like UND does. of course ndsu is the big dog in fargo, but with so many other things pulling from it, it isn't the "greatest thing ever" like sioux athletics are. it's not a slam on ndsu, its the truth. and your idea of what the big dog in the state is laughable.
-
and the fact that the bison in fargo are not nearly as popular as the sioux in grand forks. there's a lot of people who generally "dont care" about ndsu. grand forks is a town that rallies around UND's sports... fargo is just a town with a college that some people support.

you can say that UND hockey is a detriment to the school all you want... but it also could be the savior. i don't think anyone denies that men's hockey is a huge bread winner for UND and women's hockey takes a significant amount of that revenue away. but realize that by going d1, this small north dakota school will get 1/4 of a million dollars every time they make it to the frozen four. that's half a mil over the past 2 years that UND is missing out because of not being d1.
-
So none of the fans on here know the specifics of how UND is going to make the d1 transition... that must mean that the school has no plan. Obviously less than a month after announcing they will take a year to look at the move everyone and their mother should know what UND specificially is going to do. I can't believe that nobody on here has hacked into Kupchella's mind and gotten all of the details. Once someone does that, then we'll be able to answer the questions that you have that really should be aimed at the administration, which knows a heck of a lot more about this than fans on a message board. continue to throw out the same questions over and over and then complain that nobody is answering them. you won't get an answer from people that don't know. but just because us fans don't know doesn't mean the administration doesn't know.

perhaps instead of filling every thread with budget questions, he would just hope to have all that discussion happen here. that would certainly keep a lot of the flaming out of those other threads. that way, anyone who wants to talk budgets can come to this thread and talk about it. otherwise, keep it out of the others.

Aaron Marvin went at #89 to Calgary.

new jersey on the clock... hopefully forney goes #25 and makes him the 4th UND player taken in the 1st round by NJ since 2000. heard this stat today: NJ has drafted 3 UND players since '00 and three non -UND players in the 1st round. Parise and Hale have already played full-time NHL and Zajac will be in a year or so. The other three draft picks? They've played less than 15 combined NHL games. edit: nj trades 25th to Blues for 30th and 77th? hopefully forney goes to nj at 30!
-
GF Herald reporter Brad Schlossman is in Vancouver awaiting the NHL draft. He said he will be updating his blog HERE throughout the day. He will also then post his interview with Toews after he gets picked. Here's my prediction for what will happen: St Louis trades the #1 pick to Pitt for the #2 pick and some player. Pitt takes EJ, St Louis takes Toews to go with Oshie. Then New Jersey drafts Forney in the 1st round. You heard it here first.

on your mark.... get set.. go!

ok, i wasn't sure if the post-season ban would start at the end of this coming year or not. either way, UND needs to get this settled or get a judge to grant an injunction which would delay the NCAA's power in the situation.
-
not sure where i should post this... but other than this upcoming year (06-07) would the nickname issue not affect UND? hockey won't be hosting any ncaa events because the WCHA 1st round playoffs don't count. so in essence, UND has 5? years to figure out the nickname issue without being affected in post-season play.

i dont think any ss members are trying to throw all liberals in the same boat. obviously, there are big differences between those championing the "change the name" cause and a majority of liberals. however, the general notion of the right to not be offended is becoming more and more mainstream in the democratic party. many of the reasons people want the name dropped are used in other situations by liberals, so it is easy to see this as a democrat/republican issue (somewhat). when UND alumni are standing on the fence because they don't want to lose votes, to me it becomes a political issue. i used to see it as a common sense vs radical debate, but that's not the case so much as elected officials are taking sides based on the opinions of who they were voted in by. obviously, pomeroy and others feel that there are enough democrats who support dropping the name or they would have taken a harder stance. i'd imagine they thought the number of votes they would gain by being pro-sioux is way less than the number of votes they might lose by being pro-sioux. so if pomeroy and others see it as a political issue, try to not be offended if others see it the same way. (in any case, i'll try to refrain from attacks on bleeding heart liberals).

When do student tickets go on sale for next year?

i was at that game and there was way more to it that they didn't show. i'm not encouraging people to jump onto the field, but when those two guys did, it was possibly the greatest thing i have ever seen. realize the context of the game before you guys blast me for saying fans on the field was good: eighth inning, nothing has happened for a good 3-4 innings and fans are getting restless. this was an excellent crowd picker-upper. the two guys jumped out there halfway up the wall along left field. they immediately split up, which was a good idea because the security guards were on them in a second. fortunately, the young guys were able to evade security long enough for the first one to get a high five from torii hunter (huge crowd pleaser) and then get shot down by luis castillo. the second one (the one who got tackled) just kinda ran around for a good couple minutes and it looked like he was going to go into the twins dugout or try and jump back into the stands. then he suddenly goes straight for 3rd base and the place errupted. other than morneau's grand slam earlier in the game, the dome was the loudest i had heard in a while. as soon as the guy dove at home plate, almost every fan was standing and cheering. and you know the rest from there.

what jacobs is suggetsing and leaning towards, is a lot like what is happening with society in general. there are so many people who are scared of offending anyone. you can't have the fighting sioux nickname because it offends a small group of people. you can't play dodgeball in school because it picks out the weak kids. people think that by removing anything that could cause problems, they fix the problem. that's not how things work. getting rid of the nickname, or not continuing with the lawsuit isn't going to fix the problems that occur on reservations. those people who are championing the cause to drop the name aren't going to suddenly focus on all the problems plaguing reservations if UND stops or loses the lawsuit. hard work and cooperation is going to make things better between UND and the tribes, not putting your tail between your legs and running the other way.

shea hamilton's sister graduated from UND last year, so there is that connection.

students use the quad because its the center of campus. you need to meet someone and you're on opposite ends of campus? head to the quad. its an open area that gives you the ability to study in a fairly quiet area. you still get to watch people walk by and talk to friends who stop by. it's the best of both worlds. the new area will just be a good quiet place, but if you like to people-watch, then stay in the quad.

if you can make it so there's a good 70 people in there, so the cost is about $12 per person, then i'm totally in. otherwise, i'm gonna have to hope that mr and mrs. siouxman decide they can't go after paying and i'll just HAVE to take their place.
