Maryland Heights Regional -- UND vs Mich & MSU vs WMU
skateshattrick replied to brianvf's topic in Men's Hockey
Maybe, but he was far too often the scapegoat. I always liked his game, but he was inconsistent. When he was good, he was really good. When he struggled, he really struggled. As you know, defense is not only the defensemen. It requires the forwards to also defend and cover their guys and also requires goaltending. -

Michigan State worries me more than Michigan, mostly because of very good goaltending. -

I see it as a matchup problem, and teams will now attempt to use the "formula" of CC and Omaha: 1. Hard forechecking in the defensive zone and play physical 2. Win faceoffs (CC and Omaha are very good at faceoffs) because they have puck possession and many goals are scored off of faceoffs 3. Aggressive PK to limit our power play 4. Traffic in front of UND net and shoot from the point 5. Good goaltending These are just my observations. UND seems to have better success against highly skilled teams like DU, Minnesota and BU. -

Thanks coach! You should apply for the head hockey coach job because you have it figured out. The Bobby Knight or even Herb Brooks approach doesn't work anymore unless you want all of your top players to enter the transfer portal. -
Not really. If UNO is a 3 seed, they will likely play Minnesota or Quinnipiac as a 2 seed, either of whom would be heavily favored.
-
No. Omaha is locked in as a 3 seed. If UND loses, we will be a 2 seed and will be shipped elsewhere.
-
CC neutralized UND's speed by trapping and clogging up the neutral zone. They play like a Jacques Lemaire coached team. It is very frustrating to play against and requires discipline.

Omaha is already in the tournament and is a 3 seed. -
He beat Omaha 3-1 Persson is 0-3 against Omaha.

Is that Curtis Murphy's son?

Jackson Blake is a special talent. He is the only UND player on the 1st team NCHC, has a legitimate shot to be the NCHC player of the year, and likely will be a Hobey Baker finalist. I agree that he needs to get stronger and continue to work on his defensive side (especially since he is a Carolina draftee and they require players to have a strong 2 way game) and would benefit from another year. His dad would know that as well, so I sure hope he comes back for another year.

WMU is 7 points behind CC and can't catch CC

I hear you. I was at the 1987, 1997 and 2000 Frozen Fours that UND won. I was 3 for 3 and feeling like a good luck charm, so I kept going. I went in 2005-2012 every year, only to see UND lose or not make it. My kids implored me not to attend any more because I was seemingly bad luck, so I did not attend any more Frozen Fours, including 2016 when the Sioux won in Tampa.
-
I think the attendance was nearly 17,000, and 16,000 plus had to be Michigan State fans dresssed in green and white. It was a very quiet championship game.
-
I completely agree with your point, but that is not a good example. I was at that game and they did dominate Michigan State. The game was never really in doubt. You are correct that is rare in regionals and Frozen Faceoffs though. I was at another FF where BC absolutely dominated both teams, including UND.

Wrong. Tennessee State was a good opportunity if he wanted to advance his career, but Iowa State approached him about an even better opportunity. Eddie George, the head coach of Tennessee State, told Tyler that this was an opportunity that he could not pass up. Rumor has it that he will make more at Iowa State than the head coach of NDSU.
-
Tyler Roehl got hired to be the associate head coach and running backs coach at Iowa State. I'm not a Bison fan, but Tyler is a great guy and this is a great opportunity for him.

I don't disagree, but that really didn't happen until about 3 minutes left in the 2nd period. UND was winning 2-1, but had possession of the puck most of the game and the shots were 35 to 10 (and an even greater margin for shot attempts) when CC tied it on a questionable goal. Don't discount goaltending or the lack of good goaltending. Persson made exactly one tough save all night (right before the tying goal), but was fighting the puck all night and leaving rebounds. It appears that the CC goal that tied it at 2-2 deflated the team and gave all of the momentum to CC. Persson was not good either night this weekend, and was not good in either Friday night game against Miami. UND needs more consistency from the goalie, and they are not getting it right now. Persson's save % is below 90%, which is not good for a college goaltender. He can be very good and won some games for UND early, but lately he is a question mark. He never had a save % above 90% at Miami, but everyone made excuses that it was the team in front of him. The eyes don't lie and he is not a difference maker at this point. I hope that Hedquist gets at least one start this weekend until Persson gets his confidence back. IMHO, goaltending is once again the biggest issue facing this team. It has to be better to win 2-1 and 3-2 games against teams that trap like CC, Duluth and Notre Dame.

Close save % is at .926 and Persson at .907.
