2022-23 University of North Dakota Hockey Season
skateshattrick replied to Frozen4sioux's topic in Men's Hockey
I disagree that DU outplayed UND both nights. I thought UND was the better team on Friday and deserved a better fate. You are correct about Saturday though--DU absolutely dominated that game and UND was lucky to be tied 2-2 late in the 2nd. -

Agree. I was at that game, and UND also deserved a better fate. When Sanderson hit both posts and it bounced straight out, and Pinto's shot ended up on top of the net and not in, you knew it was not UND's night even though UND carried play most of the game, particularly the 4 OTs. -

Your memory doesn't serve you right because they lost to Penn State last year in Nashville and still made the NCAA tournament. -
This is a false narrative. Michigan and BU have had a lot of high end recruits over the past 5-10 years and that has recently shifted to Minnesota. However, the rest of the Big Ten combined has one first round pick (Wisconsin) and no 2nd round picks. Over the past 10 years, UND has as many first round picks as any school other than Michigan and Minnesota, and UND is very close to Minnesota. Currently, DU has 4 2nd round picks, UND has 2 2nd round picks, UMD has a first round pick, and SCSU and Omaha have 1 2nd round pick each. UND has also had a lot of recent 1st round picks, including Sanderson, JBD, Jost, Boeser, Schmaltz and Pinto was a high 2nd round pick. The NCHC has also won 5 of the last 6 NCAA tournaments, so the sky is falling narrative isn't resonating with me just yet.

I don't disagree with you, but ASU did take UMD to overtime in Duluth (not an easy place to play) and nearly swept Bemidji in Bemidi. They have a lot of grad transfers that can score, and Matthew Kopperud has proven he is a scorer. This team will be every bit as dangerous as Penn State was last year, if not more dangerous. They may not be at the level of Minnesota or Quinnipiac, but if you don't bring your A game, they are capable of beating anyone. They also stomped CC last week so they are not a cupcake.

You are a complete !@#!$!

Matthew Semisch of USCHO just posted his NCHC predictions. He predicts DU will finish 1st, but notes that Carter Savoie is returning. Savoie signed a pro contract and is in the AHL. Very sloppy journalism.

Travis Dunn -
Do you have any years of eligibility left? I assume you must be really good based upon your expertise on blue chip recruits.

Not this year though. I'm a Wings fan, and I don't want to see Dylan James for at least 2-3 years in a Wings uniform. -
Matt Dearth of Vogel has been practicing less than 6 years, so he's hardly an expert on Title IX (or anything else). Take his speculative comments with a grain of salt.

The last time UND won a national championship, 2015-16, they had a captain (Ausmus) and 5 assistant captains--Caggiula, Chyzyk, LaDue, St. Clair and Stecher. -
Really? They lost in OT to BU in a game they dominated and had a goal disallowed because of a bad offsides call. They were the consensus No. 1 team in 2020 but were not allowed to prove it in the tourney because of Covid. The next year, they lost in 5 OTs to UMD. If they win, they very easily could have won the whole thing. This year, they overachieved, but still lost in OT to a good Notre Dame team that gave Mankato fits (and beat Michigan 4 times). That is the nature of the NCAA one and down tourney. Michigan had tons of blue chippers and didn't win. BU has had the same thing happen. Some people's expectations are unrealistic.

Hopefully he performs the same as Jonny Tychonick against UND
-
How is this a miss in recruiting? He was committed here, but there is no room for him this year. Who would you have held back if not him? You should also be happy since you have man love for Sandelin and UMD is your favorite team

Scott Morrow, but we asked him to play a year of juniors and he went to UMass. He was at Shattuck.

My point is that 17 year olds with special abilities can make a huge impact in college. Fantilli is probably hyped more than Toews was, and as you said, is a very big boy. I expect him to make an impact as a 17 year old freshman. -

I'm not sure I agree. Jonathan Toews came in as a 17 year old freshman at UND, and did pretty well his freshman year. He had 22 goals and 17 assists for 39 points as a 17 year old (he also accelerated his education and was in reality a high school senior). He was an impact player in the regional at the REA against Michigan, scoring at least 2 more goals. -
I wouldn't overanalyze it. Mankato had a very good team and proved it all year. If they played DU 10 times, I think Mankato wins 5 of them. Mankato also had a tough non-conference schedule and proved that it could play with the top teams all year. Chrona came up big several times when it was still 1-0 and that was probably the difference. Denver is a very good team, and was finding a way to win the close games in the tourney. Having said that, I do think that Mankato would be even more battle tested if they were in the NCHC. They might not win the league, but they would definitely be in the top half and competing for the NCHC title. Mankato has nothing to be ashamed of--they are very good. I have a ton of respect for their program and Hastings.

Like a blind squirrel finding a nut, Ciskie finally got made a comment that is humorous, but it does not diminish what a !@#!$! he is 99.9% of the time.
