  1. With regard to the ACT cutoffs, I would presume that there will be some latitude given to students that bring "diversity" to the student body. Schools like Wisco and Michigan have pretty high academic standards, but also field competitive teams in many sports. Moreover, most schools use grades, activities, athletics, etc. in determining acceptance. "Diversity" at UND probably includes blacks, Hispanics, Indians, Asians, lesbians, gays, fat people, ex convicts, left handers, non-English speakers, athletes, cynics, Germans, etc. Otherwise, the name change crowd would be whittled down to Cryin' Jim McKenzie and Lucy Ganje.

    Officiating

Not applicable in a private environment even one used as a public forum, hence the myriad of rules that govern this and other boards.

There's a fine line between "controversy" and "trolling". There are places for both, as well.
  4. FWIW: A few larger NY banks have recently formed lending syndicates to provide the NHL teams at least one year of working capital in the event of a strike/lockout to ensure debt service and pay other non-player expenses. If a work stoppage lasts longer than that, given state of many teams' finances, it is conceivable to see more file bankruptcy. Then again, the same can be said if they maintain their current economic myopia.
  5. I think it's telling the Devils are worried about Zach, given the intensity of their game. Then again, if he took that crap in the NHL, Messrs. Stevens and Hale would probably punish the clown into a bright red spot on the ice ... and no, ref it's not a new face-off dot. Two WCHA officiating standards: One for teams with talent, and one for teams with no talent.
  6. I think that after the past couple of seasons, we should be DAMN thankful that we do have two reliable goal tenders, and a very capable third in Ziggy. Let them rotate and let their play determine if they stay in the rotation. I think the team feels pretty confident in front of them and it tends to show in their defensive zone play and shot blocking.

Riddle is far from "mediocre". Why don't you save you juvenile flames for USCHO?

My understanding is that most of them come from rehab-to-work programs, prison work release programs and homeless shelters. Actually, I don't think many of them come from USAHockey, so much as some vetting process for former players who were too pathetic to coach at Squirt or higher levels.

I sent a message myself. Oh, wait that went to Rumsfeld's office ... well, that might explain the FBI agents at my door ...

Agreed about Mason and Adam. Both are, and have always been, terrible. I believe Adam handled the CC series this weekend. CC is generally not a "chippy" team, but some of the crap that went on and not whistled was just amazing. The coaches and ADs really need to get on McLeod's ass about officiating quality. It's one thing to ride around in Parise or Vanek's breezers, it's quite another to cheap shot them and then not get called for a blatant violation. I would suggest that younger guys officiate the game, having guys in their late 40s-50s skate around with "kids" is not "it". Adam was screwing up games when I was in school and he hasn't gotten better with age. Pay the refs a decent amount of $$$ per game and bring in quality officials, both on and off the ice. If McLeod et al. can't/won't enforce the existing rules and players' are at risk, revise the fighting rules to allow things to be "settled on the ice".

    cookies

You may have to adjust the XP security settings so that it prompts you to accept/reject a cookie, as you can customize it to number of levels. I use this setting to minimize the amount of spyware that might end up on my system, and then I still use Ad-Aware every couple of weeks. I had the same "cookie" problem when the Admin moved the site to its present server. When the red Security icon popped up, I had to double click on the 66.220.1.104 cookie and get XP to accept it. I doubt Zone Alarm would be blocking cookies, unless you have it set that way. Then again, I had nothing but problems with Zone Alarm when I moved to XP, and now use Kerio as a firewall.
  12. A pretty decent article on the WJC, US hockey and some college and MJ hockey comparisons. New York Times January 11, 2004. Youth Brings U.S. Hockey Dreams of Gold By JOE LAPOINTE Published: January 11, 2004 Coach Mike Eaves did not receive the attention and admiration showered upon Pete Carroll and Nick Saban recently. But the championship won by Eaves's team might have been more significant to his sport. Carroll's Southern California Trojans and Saban's Louisiana State Tigers shared the nation's college football championship after winning bowl games. Eaves's United States team bested the world, going 6-0 to win the gold medal at the junior hockey championship in Helsinki, Finland. With a third-period comeback and a 4-3 victory over Canada on Monday, the United States won its first title in the 28-year history of the tournament, which is for players 20 and under. The victory brought the optimism of youth to an American program that has relied for a decade on the same core group of aging professional players for Olympic and World Cup tournaments. "I think this is one of those groups that is special," Eaves said Thursday in a conference call with reporters. The most valuable player of the tournament was Zach Parise, a first-round selection of the Devils in the N.H.L. draft last June. Parise tied for the tournament lead with 11 points on 5 goals and 6 assists. Born in Minnesota, he plays in college for North Dakota and is the son of J. P. Parise, who played in the N.H.L. for the Islanders and the Minnesota North Stars. "You could see it coming, but you didn't want to look too far ahead," Parise, 19, said of the first United States gold in the tournament. "Three-quarters of the team had played together before." Other stars included defensemen Mark Stuart of Colorado College, who has been drafted by the Boston Bruins, and Ryan Suter of Wisconsin, drafted by the Nashville Predators. The goalie was Al Montoya of Michigan, who will be eligible for the draft this year. "We'll be around for a long time," said Suter, 18, whose father, Bob, played for the 1980 Olympic team that won the gold medal at Lake Placid, N.Y. "Whenever they call, I'm definitely going to be right there, waiting." Suter is also the nephew of Gary Suter, who played 17 seasons in the N.H.L. Before this season, the United States national junior team had won one silver medal, in 1997, and two bronze medals, in 1986 and 1992. Canada and Russia have each won the tournament 10 times. The winning goal Monday came when Marc-Andr
  13. While I'm glad we "stole" a tie, I think this game was a nice character test for the team. UAA has always been a problem for the best Sioux teams, and it sounded like they "played their game". Officiating, "clutch 'n grab", etc., notwithstanding, the team that scores the most points still wins and it sounds like our shooting wasn't as accurate or crisp as Friday. That said, I think we've served notice to other teams that we have more than one line, and sold pretty solid goaltending this year.
  14. SCCC plays hockey? WTF? Did somebody call Dahl? Oh, yeah ... he's waiting for "The Call from Madison" ...
  15. "Quantity" does not equate to "Quality" ... for either of you.
  16. The Devils have never rushed talent into the NHL. I think this is one reason that Gionta has done well, and Hale and Martin have pretty bright futures there. With a lockout/strike more than likely to happen, I doubt NJ will pay Zach first round dollars, only to see him play in the AHL or Europe. If he burns up the second half of the season and UND goes to the FF in April, NJ might be more tempted to sign him, but I'd bet they'll wait at least one more season. He's still developing and has a very strong upside. As far as Shi..., er Shooter, he seems to get most of his hockey info from message boards, Sid and the bottom of a Grain Belt bottle.

    Clueless

I thought Zudnic's questions were/are perfectly valid. I also think most of the discussion in the thread is probably the most lucid, for USCHO, in some time.
  18. Nice job, as always, Pat. Thanks.
  19. As long as we get to The Fleet, I could really care less about conference titles. Just win, baby!!!!
  20. Right before game time on Friday, somebody have 40 pizzas delivered to the UAA locker room for Fatty Fournier ... and then have it charged to President Kupchella.
  21. I've seen that quote, or something similar, also attributed to Henry Ford and Albert Einstein. I think it was actually Al Gore though, right after he invented the internet.
  22. Keeping REA away from direct control of the University does indeed protect the arena from the PC nazis, empty-headed academics and others who would seek to mismanage it. I would guess that Engelstad trusts probably control the Nevada entity, so they benefit from a revenue stream, exercise control over Ralph's legacy and are buffered from liability as well as gaining a tax benefit built into the structure. The North Dakota entity is really just a straw-man between REA and the University. The "corporation" owns REA, but I presume the corporation is owned by UND Foundation, which is a separate entity from UND, and not subject to the whims of present/future administrations. I'm presuming, management, including the Sioux name/logo usage in REA is controlled completely by the Nevada entity.
  23. How about a sign that reads: "Sioux Hockey: Wimps need not apply" with a picture of Fatty?
  24. I'd guess "Drops His Pants" probably reported the thread to the Mods. He's pretty thin skinned and on a quest for other hockey fans to understand the glory that is UAA hockey, which isn't saying much.
  25. Hold a turkey drumstick up, and watch Fournier try to climb over the glass. Good times, good times.
