I think we have the finest cadre of armchair coaches anywhere. O&M Sioux: You should be able to find official and unofficial sources of information on Sioux hockey on the start of the hockey forum and hitting different links for this season's information, and past seasons as well.
-
Welcome aboard, Orange & Maroon Sioux.
-
Are you really an idiot, or are you working your way to that point?
-
Really? I've seen references to bouncyball and "other sports" in this thread, some even from you. No specific references to, or exclusions of, hockey. Maybe instead of waffling like a politician, you can help Whiskey Joe pass the hat when 'SU drops deep into "the red" down the road and it has to pick its students' pockets a bit more.
-
It already has a D1 team in UND hockey. Then again, our D1 opponents, e.g., Minnesota, Wisconsin, Boston College, Michigan, etc., generally don't have hyphens in their names, or are the poor stepchild of a "crown jewel" whose student body consists of idiots too dumb to get into the top school. On second thought, 'SU may have found finally its niche outside of UND's long shadow.
-
Poor, poor 'SU. It makes a vainglorious move to D1, well actually a lower tier of D1, for its own benefit then cries like a 2 year old when UND makes a decision for its own benefit. I'm sure the good people of Fargo, and the more sensible, 'SU alums will really appreciate traveling to god-knows-where for games against opponents nobody's ever heard of, let alone watch the FloodDome sit empty a good part of the year. Nice planning, Chaps. Good thing that you're in academia, otherwise you'd probably get fired for making such a "brilliant" move. BTW:

One more time with spirit ... Wonder if Chaps & Co. are trying to re-crunch those "conservative" revenue estimates they trotted out last season.

Well, according to his "bio" he is an "alumni of" Minnie. However, I don't think too many of the more lucid POI regulars claim him, much like we try to ignore our own idiots.
-
The primary reason UND's tuition is higher is due to the fact that our restrooms are equipped with toilet paper, as opposed to corn cobs and old catalogs.
-
Please don't feed the trolls, and turn this place into USCHO. Dustpan is merely seeking the affections/reactions that he doesn't get on POI from more lucid Minnie, and other, fans.
-
Ouch, ouch. I thought double digit tuition increases were only the brainchild of the Minnesota higher ed honchos. However, I can see the need for increased fees for a move to D1. BN generally charges more to carry cargo to desolate, remote locations.

I ripped this off from Sid Hartman's column in The Strib. 2/9/04 Take it for what it's worth. _________________________ "Lou Lamoriello, president and general manager of the New Jersey Devils, has been very happy with the performance of rookie defenseman Paul Martin. The former Elk River star played the past three seasons for the Gophers and has stepped right in to the lineup of the defending Stanley Cup champions. "We couldn't more pleased with him. It was an ideal situation for both him and us," Lamoriello said. "We decided that we were going to go with two young players, and Martin and [former North Dakota standout] David Hale have done everything that we expected that they could do. Martin has tremendous potential." Martin was paid a bonus of $800,000 to sign. The Devils drafted North Dakota star Zach Parise in the first round last year and allowed him to stay in college. "We're going to certainly watch how he plays this year," Lamoriello said. "Whatever the decision is after the year will be his decision, not our decision. "I don't know if he's ready or not. We really don't know if they're ready until they get in there and see what they can do. We didn't know that young Martin would be ready, we thought he had a chance. But we think that Zach's going to be quite a player." Lamoriello said he does like everything about Parise, whose father, J.P. Parise, played for the North Stars and is director of hockey operations at Shattuck-St. Mary's in Faribault. "We will just have to wait and see how Zach plays the rest of the year, how he plays in the playoffs," Lamoriello said. "I just like everything about him. I think he's a player." The Devils own the rights to Gophers winger Barry Tallackson. "He has size and strength, and I think what he has to do is just get himself to compete every night the way he's capable of competing," Lamoriello said.

I haven't seen it yet, but even the erudite Times seems to like it, and gave it a pretty solid review on Friday. Here's a bit more of a review, as well as spin on hockey movies in general. New York Times A Cold War Battle, Fought on the Ice By CHARLES McGRATH Published: February 8, 2004 THE canon of watchable or even semi-watchable hockey movies is pitifully small: "Slapshot," "Youngblood" (a now forgotten Rob Lowe vehicle that was part teen romance and part coming-of-age story, about learning to drop your gloves and throw some punches out there on the ice), the three installments of the "Mighty Ducks" saga, "Mystery, Alaska" and just a few others. These movies, like sports movies in general, divide into two categories, or sometimes vibrate between them. There are the earnest, uplifting movies

I could care less. I'm more interested in our guys taking care of their own business against CC, and beyond.
-
We expect alot out our team. Most of us have seen this crew play well in the early season, only to see them fall apart when other teams step it up the past couple of seasons. We cheer our guys on, and even when we're winning we still critique them. When we lose, the analysis can easily turn negative, especially when we get outworked and outhustled. We expect alot out of our team, and they expect alot out of themselves. Anything less would keep us on the level of a SCCC or Mankato year in and year out.
-
What gives you the impression I still live in GF, dud?
-
Our goalie situation would be better if the guys upfront did their jobs more effectively. We have a boatload of talent, but it's the intangibles that require alot of work at this stage of the season, e.g., playing not to lose rather than winning, clock watching, lack of leadership, gripping sticks too tightly, mental breakdowns, etc. A major sweep (3-4 pt spreads) of CC would be a good start, and a good confidence boost for everybody.
-
Before you criticize anybody's academic background, you'd better check out who and who isn't in Princeton Review's 351 Best Colleges. *Hint, it sure as hell isn't Stream Yellow State. And if you ever want to compare 1040s some day, let me know. Frankly, I could care less about bouncyball at any level, but I do have a perverse habit of baiting the manure eaters at 'SU. Now, get back on your tractor and figure out how Chaps is going to meet those D1 revenue projections he trotted out to the Stream Yellow partisans, legislators, students, etc. Well, maybe he can do that when he figures out how to fill out the FB schedule with teams that don't have three hyphens in their name. But thanks for stopping by, and I hope the paint thinner doesn't give you too much of a headache.
-
Was there a rodeo or tractor pull?
-
I agree. This team has done well when it created its own opportunities with a strong forecheck and controlling the neutral zone. However, that requires more than 3-4 guys to show up to play (the usual suspects), while everybody else checks the clock and thinks about the improving their "short game".
-
This team, like the past two seasons', is suffering from a lack of leadership and heart when it counts most. Moreover, the desire to win is gone, and the team and a number of fans seem content to stumble into spring based on past wins and inflated stats. Guys like Massen, Hale, Fylling, etc. who should be supplying leadership and production are MIA. The team had a gut check tonight and failed miserably. I saw more desire to win and move to the next level among the 5-6 year olds at the All Star events today, than this team has exhibited the past few series. If Blais has to bench people to the point where we have 5 forwards, 3 d-men and a goalie to get to Boston, so be it. "Gentlemen, this is a [puck]". - Vince Lombardi

Disgraceful.

Actually, the comment was something like, "Is Detroit playing one of those f'ing expansion clubs?" Since the final goal seemed so easy. One of my buddies, a Minnesota alum no less, shot back, "No, UND usually plays better than Carolina." It was a pretty good evening. Lots of NHLers and former NHL players in town, big names and no-names. Try getting a cab when everybody is here tonight ...
