Same number Dillon Simpson had when he came to UND at a young age, now he will be mentoring a potential very high draft pick.

If they have another year like last year both Neely and Sweeney are gone, which will likely be the case.

2025-26 University of North Dakota Hockey Season

Boeser had 27 goals his first year playing in the championship game and 16 his second, playing with the likes of Schmaltz, Caggiula and Jost, so unless he gets another freshman like Reschny to pop from the get go, 25 might be a little aggressive, but 15-20 might be ballpark, and frankly would be awesome. Who knows, if Swanson takes a huge step forward and can be the set up guy for Zellers like Schmaltz was for Boeser, nothing is impossible, but we saw how Perron had a hard time getting off his shot, and how inconsistent his scoring was when it looked like he would put up crazy numbers after his crazy shooting display with his hat trick against Manitoba. -

Would have been nice to keep Gordon, but do we want guys that don’t want to compete with talented freshmen for ice time. -

Tiny and soft? I think we lost a lot of our soft and slight players and added the opposite. We might not be huge up front, but not exactly tiny. -
You’re missing Cooper Simpson, Carter Sanderson, Caleb Heil and Ashton Schultz.
-
Hopefully there are two more for UND once some CHL players decide on the college route.
-
Yeah, if Cale Makar played two years, I don’t think it is a given that many first round picks are going to be one and dones.
-
Flames up next. Many had them predicted for Reschny.
-
Buccigross says to Hagens “please come back”, meaning to BC. Don’t tell me he isn’t a homer.
-
Yeah, just not a replacement for an in person draft, so just get on with the draft without that awkward bit.
-
Yeah, kind of saw the same thing, and hopefully the team that drafts him and UND coaches can instill in him that he can’t float and neglect the defensive side of the game if he wants to have a career in the NHL. Each step up the chain, you can’t just rely on your skill level, because others can match that. Compete level with a decent skill level sets you up for a nice career with many perks.
-
I’ll reserve judgement until I see how these guys do in college hockey. I think guys like Menghini might have just as big of an impact as some of the newcomers that will be coming into college hockey. We have seen plenty first round picks that don’t make huge impacts their first year of college hockey.

I will say, it will be very interesting to see if blue blood teams get as many early commits after August 1 as they did before, hoping to keep room open for high end CHL guys after their draft year. Of course the perceived can’t miss kids will probably go, but maybe more of the guys that would normally play junior hockey in the U.S. will play in the CHL and wait for guidance after they are drafted. I think it’s a whole new world out there, and hopefully with Chyzyk, UND is well positioned to take advantage of it.
-
Even if they don’t, they have had quite a bit of high end talent from Minnesota. How would Minnesota have looked for next year if they kept those guys for another year?
-
I do think that they still need to recruit guys with strong ties and 4-year guys to complement some high end guys, otherwise we might lose some identity. It will be interesting to see how Minnesota does if they don’t pull in some of these players, because I’m not convinced they become also rans. Get too many guys that are all about taking the next step as fast as they can, and you still might not guarantee consistent success, especially if you are fighting against NIL money.

https://www.dailyfaceoff.com/news/2025-nhl-draft-profile-carter-bear-scouting-report-everett-silvertips-whl Sure would be nice to get Carter Bear in a year. Might help with DuPont, or vice versa.

Look at the Bruins draft. 3 guys drafted in first round that don’t total the number of games a lot of individuals in that draft have achieved, and missing out on Connor, Ek and Boeser. 3 guys also in the second round, and one in the third and they only hit on one in those rounds as well. So Debrusk and Carlo are the only two that have done something and no longer with the team. Someone should have lost their job with that poor drafting and the guys they missed on.

Hakstol is no doubt a better coach than Motzko, but I do think Motzko has done a decent job and constructed a roster that had a good mix of role players and elite talent. It will be interesting to see how the players that aren’t top round NHL drafted from the CHL transition to college. I have a feeling many will struggle just like typical freshmen. We just need to worry about ourselves and get back to having that good mix of players that are committed to the program and the work ethic expected. Our identity needs to be more than the shiny new transfer portal and CHL additions.
-
So, we have gone from them outshining us for the past three or four years, to them being terrible so why would anyone commit there? Wasn’t it just a few months ago people were wondering if we could get any studs to commit here anymore with our track record. Say what you want, but Motzko’s path has been very similar to Hakstol’s, just hasn’t been able to win the big one.
-
I wouldn’t be surprised to see Minnesota add a CHL guy after the draft. Remember, we weren’t supposed to be able to get any elite guys either. Could be some stuff going on behind the scenes.

What about Zellers? -
I will say that he seemed totally oblivious to the problems within the program, as he was appalled that Berry was fired. We have seen and heard after the fact how the program had become complacent and the reputation took a hit. With the new staff the excitement level certainly has ramped up, now they need to show they can get back to the kind of personal accountability they had in the past.

A lot of Stanley Cups in the state of Florida the last decade.

Rather than Nodaks as an option they should have just taken the stance “We are Nodak”, then they could have created the logo suggested and/or use Nodak on the jerseys. To me, that would have been unique because how many teams are referred to by one thing. Kind of like many people referring to Ohio State as “The Ohio State” rather than Buckeyes.
