In retrospect, the best thing that could have happened for the U.S. was Jeremy Swayman struggling in the opener. I know there were many, including myself, that weren’t convinced Hellebuyck had the “it” factor, so was wondering if they would go with Oettinger or Swayman. Who knows what happens if Swayman has a decent outing in the first game instead of the disaster with the shot from center ice. I am thankful it worked out great for the U.S.!

Cole Caulfield, and Jason Robertson were two big ones for the U.S. that were left off for players with a different skill set.

Hopefully Canada losing will help make a push to get rid of it.

Actually, 3 & 4 with +3, so yeah much better than I thought. I probably skewed it by wanting someone to step up when we couldn’t even get a sniff, especially on our 4 minute power play which was abysmal. Being the goal scorer that he is, I wish he would have been a little more selfish on some of the early chances, but I will say the team as a whole got into a pure defensive posture out of the 5-3 power play by Canada, which isn’t conducive for any one individual to turn it around when the transition game just wasn’t there.

Don’t know why some people thought Denver wasn’t a threat anymore, especially how our schedule looked down the stretch.

We need to get back to playing good defense, as that is how they will win in the playoffs. We will need to win some games 2-1 or 3-2, as we don’t have the elite guys yet that can take over a playoff game. Unless we get guys like Strinden back on a roll, we will need to keep the other team to a minimum. Last 2 games the most Špunar has given up, but it isn’t on him, as we have really turned it over lately.

Miami can be very good if they keep their young talent and their goalie. Can’t imagine where they would be at right now if their power play wasn’t so bad. 13% isn’t going to cut it, nor being 57th out of 63 teams. Part of that is probably the young guys on that unit. Would imagine that will be a focus for them this offseason. Duluth power play unit is 20% higher than Miami, which is unbelievable.

I was struck by the difference in aggressiveness between the men’s and women’s game 3x3. It wasn’t as much about puck possession and circling back, in fact I was surprised how many times they chased behind the net, knowing the open ice if they come up empty handed in the puck pursuit.

Exactly. Even on the goal Miller backed off the guy that had the puck allowing him to make a play.

Other than what happens in postseason, this weekends games against #12 Connecticut are the only games they will be playing with teams within the bubble, so they can’t afford to lose to anyone. Unlike the NCHC and Big Ten, the only team that could really move the needle for them is Providence, so they may need to practically run the table, and I don’t know if that gets them inside top 10.
