What I just can't understand is how someone who is at an advanced level in coaching and who has been coaching for years and has educated assistants can be so hidebound and enamored with their "system" that not only are they resistant to change in face of unacceptable results but will stubbornly double down on the status quo. We saw that for years with Football Bubba and now Hocky Bubs just won't change anything either. This total lack of awareness from people who should know better is stunning. Clearly the college hockey world has passed Berry by and if he is here next year it will be a disaster. Everyone can see this but hi and Chaves.

What really grinds my gears about this staff is that it is now February and we have made zero progress correcting the stupid mistakes we made at the beginning of the season - none. We still have no-look passes that burn us and horrible passing in general, still have bad turnovers in our zone, still take stupid penalties at the worst times, can't get our shots on goal, and for some reason can't play a full 40 minutes to save our souls. And going into a prevent mentality with a lead burns us game after game. Time for a whole new staff.
-
You're expecting way too much from Berry.
-
I've been a Sioux Hockey fan for a long long time - thru many ups and downs - and we certainly have had some frustrations - but this is probably the first time I can refer to our hockey team as "soft" - this for me is the ultimate let-down. We used to mock the Gophers win or lose for being soft and now that is us. Changes need to be made.
-
Add that to coasting the first 5 minutes of the period and here we are
-
You are correct but the operate word here is Change. Berry has shown us no indicating that he is capable and/or willing to change anything.

Player development is becoming a serious concern - which is ironic given our facilities and coaching experience. We should have way more threads like "wow, did he every develop into a stud" than "but he looked so good when we recruited him". Sadly this is not so anymore. Combine this with what appears to be our new style of play - sloppy, soft, poor passing, not putting the puck on net, etc and you have this dumpster fire. What gives? Our program should be way better than that. It can't be just Berry - this must be a team effort.

2024-25 University of North Dakota Hockey Season

The bold part - over and over and over again. No fix in sight. With our facilities, training, nutrition, and equipment it is amazing that we are so soft and weak on the puck and in front of the net. And although it can't be fixed by training what is going on with our passing? I've never seen a team supposedly on a high level that can't make any adjustments to fix defects. -
And by extension Karl - so when he came on full time I thought our goalie worries would be over. So far it's portal portal portal.
-
Karl hasn't recruited squat - one of the biggest disappointments in our coaching staff (and that says a lot) - portal portal portal - and here Western Michigan is with two studs.

We are soft

The fact that we are repeating the same mistakes and our lack of intensity and soft play is alarming - pretty far from Sioux Hockey. -
To me this points out one of my great frustrations about Berry teams - It's been discussed that we need to play a full 60 and some have pointed out that all teams have ebbs and flows to their game. But to come out of the locker room between periods in big games and look lost for 5 minutes is inexcusable - this should be directly on the coaches and their ability to get the best efforts and focus when it matters. Good programs do this - we don't.
-
Truest statement ever - its just a question of when and how - first though they have to get your hopes up

Thanks Neil and INewz

He should be but sadly that's not how things work here - he needs to flounder for another 5-6 years first. We have the weakest athletic program for a school of our size and stature in the area.
-
What stuns me about Berry's body of work is his total inability to get his teams prepared and fired up for important games. The performance we saw last night typifies what we see time and time again in big games - no intensity, not playing for all 60, sloppy passing, and lapses in concentration. If this was just one year I could understand it but it is a constant for Barry and Staff. Time to make a wholesale change - what we see is so far from Sioux hockey it is almost unbelievable.

2024-25 University of North Dakota Hockey Season

When we got Karl on staff I thought wow- will we develop the goalies - sadly it's been the opposite. Time to clean house. -
This just illustrates how frustrating our programs are - watching the Bison and Denver repeatedly get it done while we hand out extensions for participation trophies. Berry needs to be coaching for his and Chaves' jobs. We need to start getting it done or get people in there who will - how long did we go with Bubba after it was clear what we had? Same with hockey (but but but Penrose). We have given up the high ground and need to have a plan to get to the top again.

2024-25 University of North Dakota Hockey Season
Irish replied to Frozen4sioux's topic in Men's Hockey
Failing to get it done a couple of times could be just bad luck - failure to get it done every year since 2016 is a pattern - and not a good one. The one constant - Berry -
And then Bubba decides not to give anyone else any playing time regardless of game circumstances -

Bubba being stubborn

2024-25 University of North Dakota Hockey Season

Ok - I re-read your year end post. To quote it " UND has had one NCAA win since 2016, and the win was against AIC. Bruce Ciskie said it best, hockey is about getting the right bounce and having a little luck. Recently, luck has yet to be on UND's side." So your take seems to be that we are the unluckiest team in college hockey and Denver is the luckiest. It must have been just bad luck that UND seemingly didn't come out of the locker room for about 5 minutes in the third against Michigan. Although it's hard to quantify, good coaches have their team ready to play a full 60 minutes in important games. If it were one or two years I might buy the luck excuse but this run indicates something else is going on. And this is unacceptable at UND. The failure to capitalize on our Natty in recruiting the next couple of years set the trend. Remember when we would make fun of the Gophers for tournament chokes? Well, that's us now. -

If this was his only season I would agree 1000% - However since 2016 with Hak's team Berry's team has won only 1 - count em - 1 regional game. Time to get things done or find someone who can.
