Maryland Heights Regional -- UND vs Mich & MSU vs WMU
Walsh Hall replied to brianvf's topic in Men's Hockey
For the last (2) games against CC and (3) against Omaha (all losses) the UND save percentage was 82% and the opponent's 95%. UND had significantly more quality shots and "close shots" on goal and outshot the opponent by a margin of 181 (9 goals allowed ) to 146 (26 goals allowed). The opponent's goals skewed significantly toward longer range shots. We need solid play, not lose the goaltender battle, and a little puck luck, all of which are possible. -

I was taking a look through the score sheets and season stats... Zmolek may be the MVP. Bad things just don't happen often 5x5 when he is on the ice, and he' s a monster on the PK. -

But it's not about puck luck, a couple shots being a literal inch off target, or being off-sides by the width of a sheet of paper... it's about poor coaching, lack of motivation, and stick breaking. I heard that Berry broken 4 sticks that game and Hasting only broke 2. Not difficult to figure out why we won. -
UND is +950 to win the championship. That equates to having a 57% chance to win each individual game.

There are 128 FCS teams. I'd love to be winning national championships, but that's not reasonable to expect or demand and is completely divorced from reality. If that is the standard all ADs took there would be a 95% coaching turnover every year. UND is around the 80-90th percentile of FCS teams In most endeavors that would be deemed very good. If the posters here lived up to the standards they impose on their favorite college sports teams the athletic department would be so flooded with money we'd never lose a recruiting battle or game. As I said, I believe last year was a natural time to move on and I'd like to have more information on the feasibility of a buyout after last year (were funds available) as well as going forward.

This is tough, and definitely arguments on both sides. The program isn't up to many fans' standards, but is an above average FCS program. Every program's fans want to win championships and perennially make deep runs in playoffs. That unfortunately has not happened under Bubba, but it also hasn't happened for 95% of the FCS teams. If the standard imposed by the fan base was imposed by ADs the coaching turnover would be silly. That said, it seems like a reasonable time to move on. I hope the actual payoff was structured to have doing so be a viable option after next year.

I don't think trading to the 5th pick would land a QB they couldn't take with their current pick. The price to move up to a top (3) pick would be steep and probably isn't even an option.

How many college or NHL teams have had a 95% winning percentage? Must be at least 1 per year by that logic. The bookmakers seem to disagree. I don’t recall many 20-1 dogs being offered. It’s unusual to see teams more than -250.

Minnesota State HS Hockey Tournament 2024

Are you a fact checker for NBC? This reminds me of one of their "fact checks" when Trump said that Biden has been in politics "forever." That was declared to be a lie. He was not in politics forever, but begin his politic career in 1970... -
I'm surprised that Gino was only 49 at the end of his tenure. I don't see Berry leaving anytime soon, and unless the program takes a major step backwards I assume the hire would be internal.

The common denominator is that even the top team going into the NCAA tournament has around a 1 in 10 chance of winning the title in the current state of the game. Blaming that on the coach is frankly idiotic.
-
It's my belief that there is much more parity today than in the 80's-90's. The last 2 or 3 games of a 4 game title run and pretty close to being coin flips even for the 1 seeds.

2023-24 University of North Dakota Hockey Season
Walsh Hall replied to AlphaMikeFoxtrot's topic in Men's Hockey
I don’t think anyone is bitching about it, just stating the statistical fact that in a 4 game one and done system, with all competent teams, the odds of the “best” team winning is quite small. I’m fine with the current system, but don’t lose all sense of reason when the season ends without a championship in a coin-flip game. -

For folks more involved than I currently am, what are considered to be the largest issues with NDHS hockey? -

Having a stacked team guarantees it, like 1997 Michigan, 2010 UND, etc… I’d love to know who would have won championships over the last 40 years if there were 5 game series instead of one and done. My guess is we’d have picked up 2-4 others (including the lost year) and lost 1 or 2 as well. Hockey has, statically, the largest variance in actual result versus implied result of the major sports (tennis is last). You have to be good, but luck has to be on your side to win. -

I completely agree. In our youth hockey organization I had brought up reaching out to the kids/family that drop out to try to get an honest answer to why they quit. We never did it, but I thought it would be interesting to hear the actual reasons. (Cost, time, coaches, playing time, other interest, skill level, relationship with teammates...) There are definitely many talented kids in the 12-16 age range that hang up the skates for a host of reasons. -

I believe the better seed is 12-0 so far. -

I'd call the Dickinson/Mandan game a coin flip. The others seem pretty safe. -

Count me in the group who usually has the games on while sitting at my deck. I won't be going through the process of logging into some app... to watch. I'm curious to know how many people will actually go through that hassle. The number of views is pretty small to begin with. -
I fully intend and expect to watch the hoisting after the Saturday game with Western, on home ice.

I did a little checking as to scoring on the girls' side. I picked (3) years at random from 10+ years ago and the average was 7.2 goals per game. This year, the average goals per game is 4.84, about a 33% drop. The goalie stats are significantly better now, but I didn't calculate average save percentages. Just thought this was interesting given the low scoring games and relatively low point totals for the scoring leaders. For comparison, on the boys side the average is around 7.4 goals per game. -
I think folks are forgetting what the 5x5 OT's used to look like. The vast majority of the time, both teams were more than happy to take the tie and get their pt. I recall walking out of the WSC after ties and it's an odd feeling. The fear of losing the pt outweighed taking chances to gain a pt. I don't have a grand solution outside just calling the game a tie after regulations, but nobody likes a tie. I don't see why having 4x4 instead of 3x3 is any less gimmicky, and there is some merit to having the game played the same way it is at the next level.

It's all about goalie play on the girl's side. If your goalie isn't stopping 93% or more of shots you are in trouble. Against the better goalies, basically all you're gonna get are greasy goals and possibly odd man rushes. They aren't gonna get beat on a wrister from the slot they can see. -
Who will lead the USA victory song?

From a legal standpoint this will be an interesting case. I'm curious to see the essential elements of the charge, and I'd love to see the jury instructions if the case got to that point. With the assumption of risk/consent, or whatever doctrine is applicable to sporting events in this case, it will be pretty complicated to sort out. Some incidents have been clearly outside the scope of the sporting event, but that's a tough line to draw as far as what can be proved beyond a reasonable doubt. I don't know how the "reckless" or "negligent" culpability levels are applied to sports. I believe most in-competition criminal charges are based on intentional acts clearly outside the scope of play, ala Todd Bertuzzi. A ton of incidents in sporting events could be deemed reckless or "dirty" and result in injury. I suspect the prosecutors will have to be on their game for this one.
