  1. Roosevelt's Rough Riders didn't have anything to do with North Dakota. The unit volunteers were almost all from the southern United States. Roosevelt, who eventually ended up leading the Rough Riders, spent two years in the Badlands 12 years prior to the Spanish American war. I think Rough Riders works well for Red River High School, mostly because of the alliteration. I don't think it is a good fit for UND. Put it this way: If Red River wasn't nicknamed the Rough Riders, would it even be considered?
  2. My vote would go for "Reapers" Has agricultural connotations and could make for a kick a$$ logo.
  3. The NHL uses the shootout in regular season play, and the NCHC and NCAA hockey in general are trying to position themselves more and more as a stepping stone to the NHL. Terrible or wonderful, as long as the NHL is doing it, the NCAA should probably be doing it too.
  4. Going through the document, I don't see anywhere that says the Regionals can't be held at a school's home arena.
  5. Jonathan, if you want to cement your legacy as one of UND's greatest and most beloved hockey alumni, you need to bring The Cup back to Grand Forks this time. Eddie did. Commie did.
  6. You mean mistakes like deleting 45000 emails the day you receive an open records request for them? http://www.grandforksherald.com/event/article/id/266812/
  7. If Toews keeps going like he is, that path might not be an option for very much longer.
  8. I'd like to see some of the seats reused in the new IPF, whether it is just as part of some kind of historical display, or as part of the actual spectator seating.
  9. Rows of seats have been coming out all week. It looks like they are still in the mode of salvaging what they can from the arena before demolition.
  10. Rows of seats coming out of the old ralph today.
  11. Looks like restricted-access fence posts going in the ground around the old REA today. No fencing yet though.
  12. Underground utilities around old REA being marked today.
  13. You were close. The last time UND had a goal from a North Dakotan assisted by two North Dakotans was January 12, 2002 against Alaska-Anchorage. Andy Schneider (GF) from Tim Skarperud (GF) and James Massen (Bismarck). The game ended in a 4-4 tie. You could almost count Tyler Palmiscno (EGF) from Schneider (GF) and Quinn Fylling (Minot) on Feb. 22, 2003 against MSUM, but it doesn't quite fit your criteria.

  15. http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-locker-room-mvps/09000d5d8264b360/Ray-Lewis-postgame-speech Substitutes: NCAA for Superbowl, two weeks for one week, and Sioux for Ravens, and this is pretty much how I feel about it. In my mind MacWilliam made this speech after the game.
  16. I think UND would have no problem hosting with only Phase I of the facility complete, Hyslop has enough space and lockers/showers for teams to use if those facilities aren't on site yet. While you are right that an indoor meet doesn't need much seating, I'd guess the BSC has a minimum amount of spectator seating they like to see in a host facility, which judging from the current IPF renderings, UND would have. I just hope that if the project budget gets tight that they don't reduce the size of the building by eliminating the space for seating. The facility would probably host a number of indoor high school meets as well as college meets. The high school state indoor meets would most likely be held here at least every other year with that facility, which would bring a lot of people to town. Hyslop did host a number of meets in the past, but it is not even close to 200m. I believe it is something like 160yd around, and it only went under one side of the stands.
  17. Dave, it is called risk compensation. Check out this article from Smithsonian Magazine on the 50th anniversary of the seatbelt. Excerpt: Peltzman concluded that while the standards had saved the lives of some vehicle occupants, they had also led to the deaths of pedestrians, cyclists and other non-occupants. John Adams of University College London studied the impact of seat belts and reached a similar conclusion, which he published in 1981: there was no overall decrease in highway fatalities. 18. Is there a reason SCSU or Bemidji or Mankato can't host at the Xcel? Why is Minnesota always the host in St. Paul?
  19. Of course it should go to the winner of the game. It is a part of the history of the rivalry and should continue to be so. No new trophy would ever be as good as The Nickel.
  20. Pretty sure he'll end up wrong on that if they go with the visors. They will surely leave the option for players to use a full mask. You see guys in the NHL often put on a cage after taking a stick or puck to the face, or when playing with a broken jaw, etc. I doubt they'll take that option away from the teams and players.
  21. Look here Minnesota played a home-and-home with BSU in 2000-01. Minnesota has played 5 total non-tournament out-of-conference road games since 2000. One was against Bemidji, the others were a series each against Ohio State and New Hampshire. Since then they have visited Bemidji once more for a two game series.
  22. Only because Chicago and Phoenix have yet to play their 6th straight overtime game.
  23. You can bet they'll be wearing the same gloves, helmets and socks they have had all season. I wouldn't expect anything other than the crest on the front and maybe the shoulder patches to be any different. The striping and colors will likely all be the same as the current sweaters.
  24. Would be excellent with green breezers and helmets, sock striping to match the sleeve and lower hem striping, and either green or throwback-brown gloves. I'd lose the collar lacing though - most older jerseys didn't actually have those. I think this would look better without. Also, did you try the wordmark with vertical arching instead of radial? I don't think it would look good with the black helmets, pants and gloves the team is currently wearing.
  25. The logos and wordmarks on the helmet are stickers. They can be covered or taken off and replaced. The logo on the breezers (on the right leg) is embroidered on. I'm not sure how they address that without new shells for the pants...maybe sew a patch over it. Logos on sticks are can be easily taped over. As I understand it, they can't have the name or logo visible at the NCAA tournament. I think some undergear with the logo would be fine as long as they aren't wearing it to press conferences. I remember seeing undergear on players without the logo at press conferences earlier this year when we were temporarily sans Fighting Sioux. So, I'm sure they already have that gear. One thing we can be sure of - Andy Rannells and Pat Swanson will have a busy week.
