  1. I feel bad for Stafford...he's going from wearing one of the best (if not THE best) jerseys in all of hockey, to undoubtably one of the worst!
  2. Holy ellipsis party Batman! sioux goo, i hope...you don't talk...the same...way...you type. It...would be annoying to...talk...to someone who...paused every five...seconds.
  3. Congrats to SU. Looks like they will have a secure future in DI for the forseeable future. However, I think the real question here is brought up by this quote: "Taylor began thanking student athletes and started crying again..." Would Buning cry?
  4. You're right, we'll definitely be focusing on winning our conference, rather than big paydays... Wait a minute, what conference are we focusing on winning?
  5. Will you be watching "March Madness" next spring?
  6. Absurd. How does USA Hockey intend to enforce this rule? There is no way they can send a representative to all the different rinks where teams practice. I suppose that the only real way they can enforce it is by not providing insurance coverage if a coach cracks his head during practice and was not wearing a helmet. Jloos I think you have hit the nail on the head. Almost all coaches in the USA Hockey system are adults, at least in the techincal sense of the word, and I would guess that they all know that there is a chance of falling while on the ice. I would also guess that most of them, if they thought about it for even a few seconds, could tell you that there would be a good chance that they could get a booboo on their head if they fell and hit it on the ice. Yet many, probably most, don't wear helmets. It seems to me they are making an informed decision... I can't think of a single hockey player or coach that I know that would wear a helmet while coaching, unless they were participating in drills. Even then, they probably wouldn't wear a helmet. I know I wouldn't
  7. Scheel's All Sports - Over-priced and Under-stocked Since 1989
  8. Looks like any former Fighting Sioux playing in the AHL next year will be forced to wear a visor. Story The AHL is now the second minor hockey league to require face protection for all players, with the decision being made after a player this year lost an eye. How long until we see this progress up to the NHL? Will it take a star player losing an eye for the same ruling to come into effect?
  9. This thread is turning into a "my dad can beat up your dad" type of atmosphere... Can't we all agree that student-athletes, no matter what school, do a great job for the most part? We(they) always try to do our best during competition, do pretty well in the classroom (overall we graduate at a higher rate than our non-athlete peers), and help out in the community with fund raising and local charities. We(they) try to be strong role models for kids by exhibiting class and dignity on and off the playing field.
  10. Ahhh...careful Bison Dan! Not all sports. The Sioux have been competing against NDSU at a few track meets every year since SU's transition to DI athletics. Now, I am fully aware that the track teams have no importance whatsoever to 95% of the sports fans of the two schools, but hey...we still count. Kind of.
  11. Here is a conversation I have had defending the UND student-athlete on "Voice of Dakota," a Grand Forks Blog. Maybe some of you guys want to let some of the readers know that our student-athletes and athletic program's goals aren't as stupid as they are making them sound.
  12. You should have been watching on CBC instead of NBC. They had a lot of coverage of the postgame ceremonies, including an interview with Commodore and most of the rest of the Hurricanes team.
  13. Found this article about how Commodore will be bringing The Cup to his hometown in Alberta. I also heard last night that there is a rumor he will be bringing it to Vergas, MN...not sure I believe it though. I'm still holding out hope that Stanley finds his way to the UND campus
  14. Great game last night. I saw after the game that Commodore was given one of the three stars of the game, along with the two goalies. He really played a solid game, especially when killing off that 5 on 3. Quite an honor for Mike!
  15. The call for a Dixon Ward goal is one of my first memories of Sioux Hockey... And it is a great memory!
  16. I think the real question here should be: If a hockey player (sans pads) were to race a speed skater, who would win? What distance would they race?
  17. Top speed for a human is probably closer to 25 mph. I have run 20 before and I am nowhere near a world class sprinter. 100m runners only hit top speed about 70m into the race. I would guess that once a high level hockey player got going he could get up above 30 mph, and probably close to 35 on a consistent basis
  18. Does anyone else think Coach Jones looks remarkably similar to A.J. Pierzynski?
  19. Think we could keep the logo if we used a name like University of North Dakota Legends? I saw a sign with 'North Dakota - Legendary' on it recently and thought this wouldn't be too bad.
  20. Bonzer's is a good place to see some Fighting Sioux memorabilia on the walls. Also, the laudromat a couple blocks east of THE Red Pepper on University has a collection of pennants, posters, etc. up on the walls. Go into Hugo's on a game day and usually all the workers at the check-out are wearing the Sioux Green and White.
  21. Hale and Commodore both registered an assist in their teams' wins tonight
  22. Sorry for responding to the troll, but I believe that after the West Regional, it's .600
  23. I like this idea too. Having all the athletic facilites in one area would be nice...then again, the land there is prime for more commercial development.
  24. !Caution! Long-Wordy-Post Ahead The proposed EERC expansion would bring in many new jobs in what is currently a critical research area (energy technologies). This would mean many more millions of dollars in research funding for UND, high paying jobs, a boost for the local economy, attracting bright young minds, etc. How can anyone miss that this is the best option for the University and the community? An indoor practice facility would benefit the football team and track/xc teams...maybe golf too. Softball and baseball would have most of Hyslop all to themselves then. Why does this make sense? The athletic department is already stretched pretty thin as far as dollars go. Why build a brand new building for millions of dollars? Football already has an outdoor practice facility with a weight room, team rooms, etc., as well as a natural grass practice field. Memorial Stadium hasn't been used as a competition site for track & field since the high school state meet last year (and it will never host another one), and UND hasn't hosted a competition (save for the NCC multi-events last year, just a handful of athletes) for over three years. *Moreover, as much as many of you would like to say you do, you don't really care about having an indoor track for the running programs. "The football team needs an indoor practice field for their off-season!" we all say. In the meantime the distance runners are getting driven in a van out past Thompson on the frontage road in -10F weather and told "see you in nine miles!" (I've done it many times, and sometimes its not so fun.) The middle distance and sprints (and sometimes long distance too!) are doing workouts in the two-person-wide concourse of the old Engelstad, with corners so sharp you feel like you're going to roll an ankle with every step. My teammates and I have dreamt of UND having a new indoor facility...ahhh, a 300m track, 80 yards of infield, decent team rooms, showers that work, etc. etc. Coming in from a workout with your hat frozen to your head from sweat makes you wish you were in shorts, zooming around an indoor oval. But I have learned to look at it realistically. A new building on the site of the old arena gives you Hyslop with only baseball, softball, and swimming/diving. That's a lot of square footage for only a few people, especially since the building most likely won't be used much for recsports and wellness anymore. Add a handful of classrooms, and you have one of the largest buildings on campus with very few tenants. From Hyslop to the old Ralph is quite a long way to stretch the few remaining athletic programs and having only one competition facility (that may host a couple indoor track meets per year - very little revenue.) How about this: IF we have money for it, put a new indoor facility where Memorial Stadium is now. The stadium is old and in disrepair. You could put a 5 or 6 lane track around the outdoor practice field. Since it is obvious that UND doesn't care to host any track meets anymore, not having an outdoor competition site won't be a problem. Football will be displaced for a while, but I'm sure they can make-do in Hyslop for a while. This still leaves Hyslop practically empty, but at least we aren't foolishly taking up three huge pieces of valuable land for athletics. If the new building were made large enough, everything but the pool area of Hyslop could possibly be cleared or demolished for new construction. Give the EERC the use of the land that the old Engelstad sits on because the EERC will make the best use of it. *sorry for the rant but I had to say something
