  1. I think Toews stays for next season...but that's not what I want to talk about. The nickname for this line has left me scratching my head. I have seen and heard people claiming that they came up with the nickname all season long, and it drives me insane. What is so great about the "DOT line" nickname? Why would anyone claim to have started it? This line was sensational when they were out on the ice, and the best anyone could come up with was an acronym? It seems like everyone's nickname these days is simply an abbreviation of their name: A Rod, I Rod, K Fed, J Lo, LT...granted, there are some good ones out there, but I hate seeing all the crappy ones honored Where is the creativity? There have been some great nicknames in the past. Hrkac Circus comes to mind. The Fridge, Magic, Night Train, "Air" Jordan, The Golden Jet, The Great One, Sweetness...what has changed to make us so content with mediocrity? If Toews does come back, I know the "DOT" moniker will be back as well. But if he takes his game to Chicago, can we please try to come up with something a little better next year?
  2. For those who feel that there is nothing wrong with UND's current uniforms (aside from the black pants - please get rid of those), I would direct you to this website. Lots of good info and discussion on athletic aesthetics. For those of you who think this is a good looking uniform...i just don't know what to say.
  3. other than Toews, you mean
  4. Jonny - you are a hero to many Sioux fans. Your play exemplifies Fighting Sioux hockey - strong two-way play, speed, strength, and class. Please, do yourself and all of your fans a favor. Stay in the green and white another year. Call up some former college players. Get an idea from those who have made this decision before you if they have any regrets about either staying or leaving school early. Remember - in college the game is about winning. In the pros, the game is about making money. They may say it is about winning, but it really is all about $$$. In college you are a part of a FAMILY. Your teammates are your brothers. In the pros, you are a part of an organization. Your teammates are your, well, teammmates - at least for a year or so untill they (or you) sign with someone else. The NHL will still be there in 2008. Put yourself in YOUR shoes 20 or 25 years from now. What do you think 39 year old Jonny would say to 19 year old Jonny? I'd bet he'd say "You've got a long career ahead, but only a short time to win a National Title at North Dakota. Stay in school bud. Live it up. Grow, learn about the game, develop friendships, the Blackhawks can wait." Come back to North Dakota just one more year. Convince the rest of your dynamic sophomore class to do the same. Then, win #8 and become more than just a hero to those who follow the Sioux. Become a Legend. Like the Hrkac Circus, Jeff Panzer, Karl Goerhing, Jim Archibald, Mark Taylor, Greg Johnson, Mike Commodore, your name will be spoken with reverance and awe. As the ghost of Babe Ruth said in one of my favorite movies, "Heroes get remembered...but Legends never die."
  5. I'm pretty sure they won't change them. Painting new lines on the ice is easy enough, but they would have to change the location of the lines on the boards as well. I'm not sure if the stripes on the boards are stickers, or integral parts of the boards themselves, but it seems like a lot of needless work either way. Why not just leave the NHL lines? Save some cash, that's what the NC$$ is all about, right? Besides, both teams skate on the same ice, there is no benefit to one team or another.
  6. Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing a string of wins like this: UND defeats Michigan UND defeats Minnesota UND defeats Boston College UND defeats Maine T'would be a pretty impressive run...
  7. "East Coast" Norton thinks the Hobey Hat Trick will be all goaltenders...Curry (BU), Geopfert (SCSU) and Brown (ND) Me thinks he might be wrong...
  8. Sure was a lot of celebrating for a win over the #16 seed!
  9. Red River High School (a very respectable high school program) has done this every year at the ND state tournament for quite a few years now. Didn't Potulny and Irmen bring this "tradition" to Minnesota?
  10. A couple game worn AHL all-star game jerseys of former Sioux players available here Both Curtis Murphy and Drew Stafford jerseys up for auction...I see Brett Sterling's jersey is currently pulling in over $800
  11. 90.7 is the best radio station most of the people in Grand Forks have never heard of. NPR news in the morning and at noon, but otherwise it's a great blend of music, with just about every genre you can think of. Mike Olson does a fabulous show from 9 to 10 and 12 to 3 during the day, and their afternoon DJ's play excellent music. Also, at both 10am and 6pm they have two "World Cafe" shows featuring live performances from all sorts of musicans. And to top it off, they play Jazz through the night. The station used to be known as Northern Lights Public Radio, was shut down for a number of months a couple years back. At that time the station had been around for around 75 years, making it one of the oldest campus stations in the country. The Dakota Student did a couple articles on the closing of the station back in 2003. You can Google them if you're interested. Anyway, check it out. I listen pretty much everyday, and it never gets old. You can listen online here and you can see what is playing here
  12. Bina's goal showing up as #1 on the Sportscenter top ten reminds me of a baseball practice from when I was 12 or 13... Robbie was the shortstop on our team, but during this practice he was playing center field. Someone hit a long fly ball to him out in center, and the guy on third tagged up to come home, but Bina gunned him out with an amazing throw. Naturally, everyone started singing the Sportscenter theme song...
  13. Look, don't get me wrong. I don't have any problems with better fabrics, better fit, moisture wicking, etc. etc. What I have a problem with is every team sponsored by Nike using the exact same 'cookie cutter' jersey design. If these become the NORM for EVERY team, than the Nike brand will have become more visible than the name on the front of the jersey, simply because you will recognize it as a Nike jersey before recognizing it as a North Dakota jersey, Denver jersey, Maine jersey, etc. If teams like UND can use the "advanced" jerseys and still retain an identity separate from that of their uniform provider, great. If not, I'll continue to try to convince people that it is bad.
  14. Agreed. Just look at D-I college basketball. All the teams wearing Nike Jerseys wear the same template. I think if these catch on at all you'll see the same thing in college hockey. Some people might like the design, but the problem is that they basically become an advertisement for Nike (not that they aren't now, with swooshes all over the place, but that's another story...) The minute someone look at the jersey, they'll be saying "hey, I like those Nike jerseys," not, "hey, I like those Sioux jerseys." I guess I don't mind the slimmer fit so much, but the vertical stripes are not good. A hockey jersey is supposed to have a stripe around the bottom, and around the sleeves. I think a team could have an original design, but I imagine they'd have to come up with it themselves. Nike will say, "use our template and save some money. Everyone's doing it. Come on, you can change anytime. One new jersey is not going to hurt." You're thinking of the new RBK Edge jerseys being made for the NHL.
  15. Article about new NHL uniforms. Scroll to the bottom of the page for a bit of info on the Kings coming close to signing Brady Murray
  16. I was looking at the rosters for the AHL All-Star game, and all three starting forwards for the PlanetUSA team are from the WCHA. Bochenski will be skating with Erik Westrum and Brett Sterling...nice showing for WCHA hockey.
  17. Didn't Mark Taylor win the "player of the year" award the last 2 years before they started calling it the Hobey Baker? Can anyone help me out on this?
  18. Don't count 'em out for some NC$$ hardware just yet...
  19. Toews gets the game winning goal. Time to toss another gold medal in the trophy case at home.
  20. Does anyone have any pictures of the team from the Dartmouth game??
