Even if North Dakota prevailed against the NCAA -------------> Pyrrhic Victory.

First I want to say that I am will be sad when the Fighting Sioux name is goine. My dad played BB for UND, I have been a Fighting Sioux fan since the '60's. As a fan of the University of North Dakota, I don't want the athletic department and for that matter the entire university dragged through the mud and slime for years to come. The Big Sky has threatened to not allow membership, Minnesota and Wisconsin will not play UND, and others will follow. UND would likely be an independent and stuck on an island in the arctic. Sica use of the word pariah, will be pretty accurate. There is an SBoHE this meeting this Thursday in Minot. Action needs to be taken. Jon Backes (current Board president) and Grant Shaft (Board president July 1st) are both UND law school graduates and I'm sure will get this moving, with all that has transpired in the past few days. The SBoHE needs to take control of the nickname issue back from the legislature. Constitutionally, it IS theirs to control. They need to advise Dalrymple and Stenehjem of their intent, so they are not blindsided (I doubt that they would be, but courtesy would dictate advising). The SBoHE then directs UND to retire the name. UND will follow direction as stipulated by the SBoHE, as UND is under their authority. Yes, this likely head to court, but better sooner than later. What won't happen?? The NCAA is not going to change their mind. They are not going to allow a law passed after a settlement agreement was made to force them to change their mind. It won't stand up legally, so they have no reason to back down. They will continue to point to the settlement and say they are done with the issue and impose sanctions, should UND maintain use of the Fighting Sioux name. I am a fan of the University of North Dakota and will always be, no matter what the nickname is.

I would be willing to bet that an item will be added to the agenda of next weeks SBoHE meeting in Minot. They don't meet again until Sept., which is after the state law takes effect and the NCAA sanctions begin. Should make for an interesting meeting.

Okay, you don't mind UND not playing Minn or Wisc. in hockey. What about the rest of the UND athletic teams and their athletes, if the Big Sky decides North Dakota will not be allowed to join? Can you imagine the scheduling difficulties, recruiting problems, coaches leaving, .... ? THIS ISN'T JUST ABOUT HOCKEY!!!

I'm able to put my emotional attachment to the Fighting Sioux name the side and accept the pragmatic side of the equation that it is better for UND, both athletically and academically, to move on.

You already got my +1 for the day.

There are still some who would cut off their nose to spite their face. Change the name, join a great athletic conference covering most of your sports, become a member of good standing to your peers and enjoy some good athletic competition OR keep the name, causing Minnesota and Wisconsin not play you in any sport, the Big Sky to blackball you and have no other conference touch you with a 10' pole. Hmmm, now what should we do?

No, it's Chapman's fault.

It wasn't over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor, but it was after Nagasaki was bombed. Consider this the atom bomb on Nagasaki for the Fighting Sioux name. Note 1: I know the Germans didn't bomb Pearl Harbor. Note 2: I'm not trying to make light of a bomb dropped on people.

To say that this is a game changer is an understatement. I have been hopeful that UND would remain the Fighting Sioux, but it looks to me like there is no way around this. Those who want to keep the name for the sake of the hockey team, will soon be outnumbered. UND needs a conference. If the Big Sky has reservations, as did the Summit. Is there a conference that won't? It is time to put the wheels in motion for a change by July 1, 2012. Whether it is a determination that UND just goes by North Dakota or a new name is chosen, this is too big to ignore.

Former UND student Dave Klosterman wrote a piece on North Dakota BB.... Klosterman weaves David v Goliath tale of N.D. basketball Link to the piece in Grantland....Three-Man Weave As usual, Klosterman doesn't disappoint.

Do you ever read the comments posted to stories on the Herald or Forum websites. Some of the comments have all kinds of crazy accusations. Are we going to start hunting down these people or allow them to have the freedom to post. I hope we don't get to the day where you or I or someone else on this forum have to worry that something we post on SiouxSports.com gets us in legal trouble. Some other changes that have or will change our lives,,,,, The light bulb law of 2012.. The toilet law of 1992. One day they will be telling you what to wear and what to eat. How about a law regarding men's genitals? Freedoms are being taken from us.

While I'm not defending what UND did to Ms. Hoffert, this is getting to be more the norm in today's society. In the past two weeks I have had two friends affected by such action. In one case the company dropped the top two people from their positions on a Wednesday without notice. My friend was then installed as the new regional manager the next day. In the other case another friend was dropped from his district manager position of one my competitors two days after I had talked to hm about how business was going. I haven't had a chance to talk to him since I learned he was fired, but if he knew he was on the way out the door, he didn't give me any hints. Regardless if a change of direction was to be made at UND, Ms. Hoffert had earned the privilege, after 37 years of service, of resigning, rather than being removed in such a manner.
