  1. A couple of months ago, "dwindling few" likely, would have been laughable. After the governor signed the bill, I was ambivalent about where things were heading. While I would have loved to see the Fighting Sioux remain, I didn't like the implications, that were known at that time. When the letter came out from the Big Sky and the long term implications were realized, things changed, for me and I'm sure for others. "Dwindling few" is probably a lot more accurate than you think.

  3. UND golf coach Dan Frei resigns
  4. I think the Big Sky presidents will do whatever they can to help UND, IF that means transition away from Fighting Sioux. I can't see them wanting to blackball UND, knowing that it would destroy athletics at UND. But I can also see the opposite.... if there is no movement away from the Fighting Sioux name. They could say, "we warned you, the NCAA warned you and you didn't listen. Live in the hell that you have created."
  5. If you didn't think the name needed to be changed, maybe you should read this.... BigSkyLetter to Schneider
  6. I'm not sure even how to respond to this, so I'll give it the ol' PCM, Vhat?
  7. and what percentage don't live close enough to attend games regularly, but still give donations to UND for scholarships, facilities, etc.
  8. Says the I love Fighting Sioux hockey guy. I said before you can call me Chicken Little if you like and now you can go ahead and blame me for the loss of the Fighting Sioux name now too. I am a 1984 graduate of UND. My parents both graduated from UND, along with my brother, four uncles and a number of cousins. There probably isn't one of us who wants to see the day that UND is no longer the Fighting Sioux, but there is little choice at this point. Either stay with the name and watch the athletic department crash and with it destroy the name that really matters (University of North Dakota) or change the name and watch UND soar. I truly believe that UND is on the cusp of greatness. With admission into the Big Sky, a whole new frontier is going to be opened to UND. Add to that the research that is going on at UND, the Aerospace program with UAVs, the entrepreneurial programs, a new degree in petroleum engineering, etc., UND is ready to soar.

  11. Drafting Is an Art, Not a Science, but Some Teams Could Get Quick Help
  12. "Could this lead to a time when league play and possibly league membership itself could be affected?" Leads me to believe that there could be memberhip issues with UND in the Big Sky.
  13. Back to what needs to happen. From the Bismarck Tribune.... Drop the 'Fighting Sioux'
  14. Winrich again calls on Stenehjem to weigh in on constitutionality of Sioux nickname bill
  15. The nickname issue was removed from UND when Kupchella, the last UND president took office. It was up to the SBoHE to get the tribes to agree on the name, not UND.
  16. I'm thinking that Kelley has some allies in this. Goetz for sure. Others? Won't Carlson be gone by the time the next biennium funding bill comes up? There will be House members that will make an example of the SBoHE next time around, but I'm sure many will look back and say that that this was a bad deal for UND and regret voting for it.
  17. I agree. UND should not have relinquished control on the issue. They thought they were doing Kupchella a favor by "handling" it for him. Unintended consequences.
  18. I see you have read Omdahl's piece from this morning..... Is the higher ed board dysfunctional? This is more or less how this whole thread started. I see long term repercussions from the legislature taking an issue that belonged to the SBoHE and the SBoHE allowing it to happen.
  19. I'm sure there are good number of Bison fans that would like nothing better than for UND to languish in this turmoil for years to come. Now is the time to end the controversy and move forward, not only the athletic department, but the entire University.
  20. Kelley: Overturn UND Nickname Law
  21. If it is the same players, coaches and teams at the same school, how do you say it is a brand new program that did not previously exist?
  22. Actually you said they would be giving the Fighting Sioux program a death penalty. The program will exist under another name. So when you got married and your wife took your last name to she cease to exist? When she changed her name were you no longer interested in her? I love the FIghting Sioux name, but I am and always will be a fan of UND athletics, whether they are the FIghting SIoux or something else.
  23. #3 Said law could be declared unconstitutional. The SBoHE controls the university system, constitutionally, not the legislature. By not challenging this law, the SBoHE has set themselves up for future intrusion from the legislature, even if the legislature reverses course on this issue. Precedence has been set for the future mayhem.
