  3. "Could this lead to a time when league play and possibly league membership itself could be affected?" Leads me to believe that there could be memberhip issues with UND in the Big Sky.
  4. Back to what needs to happen. From the Bismarck Tribune.... Drop the 'Fighting Sioux'
  5. Winrich again calls on Stenehjem to weigh in on constitutionality of Sioux nickname bill

  7. The nickname issue was removed from UND when Kupchella, the last UND president took office. It was up to the SBoHE to get the tribes to agree on the name, not UND.
  8. I'm thinking that Kelley has some allies in this. Goetz for sure. Others? Won't Carlson be gone by the time the next biennium funding bill comes up? There will be House members that will make an example of the SBoHE next time around, but I'm sure many will look back and say that that this was a bad deal for UND and regret voting for it.
  9. I agree. UND should not have relinquished control on the issue. They thought they were doing Kupchella a favor by "handling" it for him. Unintended consequences.
  10. I see you have read Omdahl's piece from this morning..... Is the higher ed board dysfunctional? This is more or less how this whole thread started. I see long term repercussions from the legislature taking an issue that belonged to the SBoHE and the SBoHE allowing it to happen.
  11. I'm sure there are good number of Bison fans that would like nothing better than for UND to languish in this turmoil for years to come. Now is the time to end the controversy and move forward, not only the athletic department, but the entire University.
  12. Kelley: Overturn UND Nickname Law
  13. If it is the same players, coaches and teams at the same school, how do you say it is a brand new program that did not previously exist?
  14. Actually you said they would be giving the Fighting Sioux program a death penalty. The program will exist under another name. So when you got married and your wife took your last name to she cease to exist? When she changed her name were you no longer interested in her? I love the FIghting Sioux name, but I am and always will be a fan of UND athletics, whether they are the FIghting SIoux or something else.
  15. #3 Said law could be declared unconstitutional. The SBoHE controls the university system, constitutionally, not the legislature. By not challenging this law, the SBoHE has set themselves up for future intrusion from the legislature, even if the legislature reverses course on this issue. Precedence has been set for the future mayhem.
  16. Would that TRUTH include how the State of North Dakota and the NCAA agreed to a settlement, which required UND get approval from two tribes or retire the name? Or is there another TRUTH?
  17. Explain how changing the name is the death penalty. I don't see how scheduling, recruiting, attendance, retention of coaches or enrollment will be diminished. They will only be enhanced. Donations from hockey fans may fall off temporarily due to the retirement of the Sioux name, but donations from football and basketball fans will likely increase with the increased excitement in joining the Big Sky.
  18. Keeping the name will be more devastating at this point than retiring it for some of the reasons I have mentioned before.... scheduling, recruiting, attendance, donations, retention of coaches, enrollment,...
  19. Moser commits to play volleyball at University of North Dakotak
  20. Dang, I already gave away my +1 for the day.
  21. Dave, the NCAA doesn't care what they think. Both parties agreed to a settlement. UND was to get the approval of both tribes. It didn't happen. The NCAA is fulfilling their end of the settlement..
  22. You are right the AND comes later in the bill.
  23. Final Five is not an NCAA event, it is WCHA, but to advance to the play-offs, they are playing in NCAA events.
  24. How about a big "What if" here. The SBoHE gives control of the issue back to the University saying that it is up to the institution to decide. UND decides to retire the name/logo. The bill says any action to retire the name by the SBoHE AND UND, not SBoHE OR UND. At that point SBoHE can say we didn't do it UND did. The AND is gone. CAS, ScottM or any other legal person have a take on that? Okay, I admit, this is a loooooooong stretch.
  25. Could those penalties be any worse than what would happen if UND is forced to maintain the nickname and be booted out of the Big Sky? My comment about someone going to jail in an earlier post was rhetorical, but I do want to know what would/could happen if the soon-to-be law is violated. The way I read this bill, if UND decided not to use the Sioux logo on the Women's Softball batting helmets, that would violate the bill/law, because that would be discontinued use of the logo. The last sentence of this bill is idiotic.
