In general I support not having pros in the Olympics. The same is already true in most other Olympic sports. I just wish they made it policy across the board. That being said my guess is that the NHL will allow players to go if they forfeit part of their salary. Could be a steep price for some of the athletes depending on how much, if anything, their nation pays them.

I'd like to see the best in the world play, but I think the IOC and IIHF need to put up more to get the NHL players to the Olympics. The Winter Olympics primary sports are figure skating and ice hockey. This isn't some obscure sport we're talking about here. It's a main driver of revenue for the IOC. I suppose the phrase "primary sport" depends on which country you're asking.

I heard she preferred "Beer Lady" but I don't recall why...regardless I was sad to see the news.

Just doesn't add up to me. There wasn't much of a difference between men's and women's S&D...and after cutting baseball and (funding for) men's golf they should have been cleared to cut just WH. Admittedly I could be wrong as I am not a Title IX Lawyer but the whole thing would be easier to accept for cutting both sports if the administration would be a little more transparent with their reasoning.- 2,150 replies

I agree with the first part if the team(s) can prove that they can fill the lower bowl on a regular occurance. But are you serious about the second part? The Hyslop is easily the second worst gym I've ever seen. The worst is the UND Armory...The Betty on the other hand is far better than most, if not all, high school gyms I've seen.

Here's the thing though, that game was huge. It was the first time we played NDSU in Grand Forks since they went D1. I don't recall if we played them in Fargo before that or if we played them in other sports, but the school amped this game up a ton. It was the one of maybe two basketball games they asked to have a ROTC honor guard present the colors for while I was there (I think they had us do one when Gene Roebuck retired from WBB but I'm not 100% sure). So yes, it can be done but it needs to be done for the right games (rivalries, good Power 5 teams etc). If we played every B-Ball game there it would look pathetic simply due to the empty seats. Like when the Twins had to section off parts of the Metrodome with banners to cover up the empty upper deck seats.

Forgot about golf. Could have cut that too. Good info. Although it really only would have prevented us from championship games for one year. We would have still been eligible for the NIT/WNIT with regular season wins and football would get an at large bid. So such a penalty would have hurt volleyball the most. Longterm still might have worked out better. Not sure the penalty to Summit applies or not since we haven't technically started playing there yet. I'm sure Kennedy and Faison would know that information though.- 2,150 replies

That article really doesn't cover why those two sports were chosen over any other sports. The simple answer is that they were the two most expensive sports. But considering they were both much more successful than tennis, soccer and softball...I still question the choice to cut both programs. I don't blame Kennedy for this he inherited a mess and it got worse once he got here, and he had to make a tough choice. I just want to know the other options he realistically had and what reasoning he ultimately used to make his choice.- 2,150 replies

Here's a question. Why cut S&D if cutting women's hockey alone made the financial goal?- 2,150 replies

Hmm. The two Philly friends I have like him but that's a small sampling size. Firing him would be incredibly short sighted at this point...especially considering they made the playoffs last year.

So you want the school to fund a sport that has a large roster, lots of equipment and, as you pointed out, lots of traveling. Sounds like that would be more expensive than S&D to me.- 2,150 replies

I feel for the recruit but if she's really as good as she claims her chances of playing D1 hockey are hardly "slim to none." Other teams will offer her a scholarship, if not this year than next.

It's really a shame it came to this. Realistically we were a coach away from a championship team with the players we had. Idalski not getting canned or resigned at the end of the year raised some pretty major red flags.

I just want to break from hockey and touch on swimming and diving for a moment. I question how much they'll really save on this. Yes you don't have to be the coaches or the travel cost, but they'll still have to maintain the pool for students. It just seems to me that they're transferring the costs to the facilities and academic books. Plus they have historically been a pretty good team. It would have made more sense to cut softball or tennis.- 2,150 replies

Hockey is our sport and if it were up to me, women's hockey would have stayed. Our swimming and diving teams are pretty good really an I would have kept them as well. I would have personally cut: soccer, tennis, softball and golf. Not if that would work financially or per scholarship rules but 3 of those sports don't even have on-campus facilities and the official soccer field is pretty sad. That being said, I don't blame Kennedy for his decision. He was put in a tough spot I respect that he made the decision base on pure numbers. If people want to be mad, they should be mad at those in Congress who didn't plan ahead for a budget shortfall. The state should have funded building repairs when it had the availability to do so. Cuts may have still been needed, but with better planning we may have been able to avoid cutting some, if not all, of these sports.

I wonder how many sioux players I can get onto a team...
-
I'm pretty new here too. All I can say is don't worry about it too much. Aside from a few Big trolls, everyone on here is pretty nice and you will pick up on things pretty quickly.
-
I've heard this so much from Big Ten fans. They seem to forget that ND has played Hockey East teams all year and thus have a good pairwise...that may not hold true if they were in the Big Ten.
-
That is one such roadblock yes.
-
*sigh* seeing the AF team do so well this year makes me wish they would just trade spots with Huntsville. It makes sense regionally and would make the WCHA stronger. Alas there are roadblocks to such a move.
-
Well...I guess I'm cheering for a NCHC match up now.

Money is transferrable. If they tie the money directly to academics, the money that was originally tied to that academic bill can now be used for anything else.- 2,150 replies

It's always bittersweet to see players leave early.

Well I expect BU-UMD players to be pretty tired considering both games went into OT.

Facebook group I'm in. Used to be for the old WCHA fans to smack talk each other. Never updated the name.
