  1. Hopefully someone has more knowledge on this than me...but it's always seemed to me that we have a major aviation school. Why not buy a big plane and have the Instructor Pilots take turns flying the teams around. Through a senior student on the flight too if need be.
  2. My bad. I thought Finland had upset Canada instead of Russia. Wouldn't really call that an upset actually, which is probably why the hype confused me. Your point is made.
  3. Considering Canada didn't make the final and the USA had to go to OT, I'm not sure how you claim to your "revamp." I agree the sport needs to be more competitive...and have checking...but upsets breed improvement for the sport. Same reason UCONN losing was good for women's NCAA basketball.
  4. http://www.grandforksherald.com/opinion/letters/4247087-letter-dont-misdirect-anger-over-und-budget-cuts Few people seem to get that all of these cuts are ultimately on the state government. I'm not a resident and I won't tell anyone how to vote or what's best for their stare. But anyone who wants to save women's hockey and/or S&D should be complaining to their congressmen and govenor, not to the school or media.
  5. That's actually a good point. If they did somehow save the program (doubtful) he'd likely be viewed as a hero and the school would be forced to extend his contract.
  6. This book has nothing to do with sports...but I enjoyed the title.
  7. It has nothing to do with be a hockey school. It has to do with winning the football title, volleyball title, and both men's/women's basketball. I'd actually be OK with that.
  8. How much does North Dakota save by switching conferences? Originally it made sense geographically and puts us with more rivals. And honestly, despite the Slummit comments it seems to be on par strengthwise. That being said, it also seems to be creating more headaches (limited our options to cut sports, teams might be leaving etc). So was it worth it? What's the concensus here?
  9. Lol. How silly of me. Honestly I did hear that before and I just forgot. Kind of BS but given that information I can see why they'd keep it in order to help them stay at NCAA "16" sports.
  10. He probably should have joined the NCHC though instead of Hockey East..or the Big Joke. :-D
  11. Having been stationed at Scott...I'd think SLU (yes, technically it's in MO) is more likely to get a team in the near future than any IL school. But only if the Blues are willing to share their stadium.
  12. I didn't mind the alerus but on on-campus stadium would get better student attendance. However I wouldn't expect any renovations for several years after all of these cuts.
  13. Don't get me wrong, I'm sorry to see women's hockey go. But football does far more for the school and has at least one a conference championship. 2 if you count the one in our transition period. Edit Not to mention the complications for Title IX if they cut football.
  14. I never would have thought track and field would cost so much...kind of surprised they kept it actually.
  15. In general I support not having pros in the Olympics. The same is already true in most other Olympic sports. I just wish they made it policy across the board. That being said my guess is that the NHL will allow players to go if they forfeit part of their salary. Could be a steep price for some of the athletes depending on how much, if anything, their nation pays them.
  16. I'd like to see the best in the world play, but I think the IOC and IIHF need to put up more to get the NHL players to the Olympics. The Winter Olympics primary sports are figure skating and ice hockey. This isn't some obscure sport we're talking about here. It's a main driver of revenue for the IOC. I suppose the phrase "primary sport" depends on which country you're asking.
  17. I heard she preferred "Beer Lady" but I don't recall why...regardless I was sad to see the news.
  18. Just doesn't add up to me. There wasn't much of a difference between men's and women's S&D...and after cutting baseball and (funding for) men's golf they should have been cleared to cut just WH. Admittedly I could be wrong as I am not a Title IX Lawyer but the whole thing would be easier to accept for cutting both sports if the administration would be a little more transparent with their reasoning.
  19. I agree with the first part if the team(s) can prove that they can fill the lower bowl on a regular occurance. But are you serious about the second part? The Hyslop is easily the second worst gym I've ever seen. The worst is the UND Armory...The Betty on the other hand is far better than most, if not all, high school gyms I've seen.
  20. Here's the thing though, that game was huge. It was the first time we played NDSU in Grand Forks since they went D1. I don't recall if we played them in Fargo before that or if we played them in other sports, but the school amped this game up a ton. It was the one of maybe two basketball games they asked to have a ROTC honor guard present the colors for while I was there (I think they had us do one when Gene Roebuck retired from WBB but I'm not 100% sure). So yes, it can be done but it needs to be done for the right games (rivalries, good Power 5 teams etc). If we played every B-Ball game there it would look pathetic simply due to the empty seats. Like when the Twins had to section off parts of the Metrodome with banners to cover up the empty upper deck seats.
  21. Forgot about golf. Could have cut that too. Good info. Although it really only would have prevented us from championship games for one year. We would have still been eligible for the NIT/WNIT with regular season wins and football would get an at large bid. So such a penalty would have hurt volleyball the most. Longterm still might have worked out better. Not sure the penalty to Summit applies or not since we haven't technically started playing there yet. I'm sure Kennedy and Faison would know that information though.
  22. That article really doesn't cover why those two sports were chosen over any other sports. The simple answer is that they were the two most expensive sports. But considering they were both much more successful than tennis, soccer and softball...I still question the choice to cut both programs. I don't blame Kennedy for this he inherited a mess and it got worse once he got here, and he had to make a tough choice. I just want to know the other options he realistically had and what reasoning he ultimately used to make his choice.
  23. Here's a question. Why cut S&D if cutting women's hockey alone made the financial goal?
  24. Hmm. The two Philly friends I have like him but that's a small sampling size. Firing him would be incredibly short sighted at this point...especially considering they made the playoffs last year.
  25. So you want the school to fund a sport that has a large roster, lots of equipment and, as you pointed out, lots of traveling. Sounds like that would be more expensive than S&D to me.
