And one wonders how Wisco can have a such dumpster fire in HOCKEY ! The whole program has a combination of problems; it's from coaches, administration, B1G, students, some fans that think football and bouncy ball are all that count, and to the press.

If Big Ten Offers UND Should They Join?
BarnWinterSportsEngelstad replied to Cratter's topic in Men's Hockey
Well, the B1Ghc was forced on the Goofs and Wisco too! When Pen State started Div1 hockey, game over, you had to leave WCHA. Something not talked about, but you may want to keep in mind (you label yourself as a "Gopher Fan", so I assume the same). U MN is on the western edge of the B1G. The Big Ten seems to be moving East, especially with it's now 14 full membership teams. There's sports written articles eluding to how the B1G would like to have a share of NY City area TV market. I would think this moving more and more to the East is not in Minnesota's best interest, you'll be darn near an outsider, if this keeps up. It may be in MN best interest to push for an B1G affiliate in hockey west of Minneapolis/St Paul. -

Nebraska was an AAU member when they applied for Big Ten. Later AAU dropped them because their Med School was too far from U Nebraska's main campus. -

So, we should have 2 good games with them the first weekend of November? -
I remember Archibald got creamed one time at my end of the ice, he quickly got up and shook his stick at the guy, who by then was skating to the other end. Jim then skated after him while still shaking his stick at him. He caught up to him at the other end, dropped his stick and gloves and in no time that guy was laying motionless on the ice. He got like 2 - 2minute penalties.

Are the Goofs going to when their 6th conference championship in a row next year, or is there someone capable of knocking them off? Sounds like Mich lost a lot and Notre Dame not in yet. -
Are those more early departures?

They did have concessions!

Thanks for the help! -
Like I said, I don't know what the politically correct way of saying it is? But after the 2 B1G schools left the WCHA, a few other schools from the WCHA (including UND) took it upon themselves to leave, hence forming NCHC. Yes, they could of stayed in the WCHA, but choose not to play conference games with these teams. Maybe they made a mistake?
-
Correct Dub, and by the way, UND was one of the instigators to move away from conference play with these teams. In the west (excluding the Goofs and Wisco), the Colorado schools and UND had vintage motors on their boats and they trolled from ice pond to ice pond, searching for the BETTER hockey programs to form a new conference. It didn't take long to get some bites. Of course one must understand, this opportunity for a new conference developed when Penn State started Div1 hockey. That created a 6th team of the 14 teams in the B1G to have hockey. Which in turn, by rule, mandated that these 6 teams must now have a hockey conference within the B1G. So one could kind of say that; Mn and Wis had to leave the WCHA. UND and others created the NCHC to get away from conference play with these teams and tried to form a conference with more competitive teams. Maybe there is a politically correct way of saying this? Some schools and many fans where not happy by these moves?

Agree, I just taught the 2nd poster's comment about "Fighting Hawks" was kind of interesting? Then went on to call us "Fighting Sioux". -

Thanks, Great Video. Still seems like just yesterday! What a great way to start a week. -
Save your money, or better yet donate it. There sure seems to be a plan for some move with the men's in the UND athletic department! Maybe this timing with this budget shortage is making it kind of awkward? Which like mentioned here before, might make UND publicly sound not interested at first. Maybe changes in football(FBS) and hockey (B1Ghc) will play out at the same time?

Interesting post on a gopherhole.com message board. Two goofs posting on a hockey tread named "Should the B1G add North Dakota?" A poster posts: That, my friend, is impossible. If we could only add one more team to the B1G it would be unanimous... UND FIGHTING HAWKS. Next poster posts: Every time I read "Fighting Hawks", I throw up a little. The Fighting Sioux would be an excellent addition to the B1G! As for UND losing it's prowess in Hockey because of the rise of the B1G, Alchemy, you need to check where most of their recruits come from. B1G schools will never recruit Moose Jaw like UND does! They also own the Northwest corner of Minnesota. -

Well, some sports writers have also mentioned UND as a potential hockey prospect to be asked to join the B1G in some manner. UND has a great hockey program and therefore it is being noticed by the hockey world. Of course for this actually happening may be slim and sure is fun posting about in the off season. By the way there was a great turnout for the UND/SU baseball game yesterday and the weather was perfect. GF Herald estimated crowd at 1,000. -

I agree. Today, the biggest hockey rivalries are in the Boston area, because the Goof's and Wisco were forced into the B1G. This resulted in a conference separation from ND (which used to be the best 3 way rivalry). ND has a huge alumni support base in the twin cities area and they show up for games there. Wisconsin fans travel well to watch their hockey team in a tourney in the cities. The B1G needs their tournaments in the cities to fill the arena and ND must be part of it for that to happen. Minnesota fans, ND's traveling fans, and these ND fans in the cities are the nucleus of a full house attendance for tourneys in the cities. If ND is playing NCHC teams in the cities, the crowd isn't the same as it used to be in the WCHA tourney (old Final Five), because MN is not in it. I'll say it again, you need both ND and MN in a tourney in the cities to get the big arena full. This won't work as well in Wisconsin or Michigan. The home games in the Ralph will continue to have great fan support no matter what conference were in. Our road games could have an even better attendance in the B1G than the NCHC. UND averaged 11,675 for home attendance last season (2015-16), by far college's best. The B1G teams averaged 6,476 (adding Notre Dame) in home attendance last season and the NCHC averaged 4,834, (from what all that is printed about the B1G attendance) this may surprise some, actually quite a difference there. The B1G will slowly get better with or without UND, but it would help. Also, I'm trying to figure out the network revenue differences between the 2 conferences. At this point assuming, well you know. With UND's road game fan support, one would think this 6,476 number would increase with UND in the B1G. I would think rivalries would also grow stronger than the ones were building in the NCHC. This should also create better attendance at their home games when they play us, a successful program. There is so much more potential in the B1G, look at my chart a few posts back. Minnesota and Wisconsin understand this. Regarding hockey, they have been pushed around by the B1G and may finally get a little support. Also, the Notre Dam addition was a sign that they are not going to fix this from within the B1G and are looking outside the box. They need to check the ND box. If it were up to me, I would rather have UND play conference games every year with Minnesota than Duluth Wisconsin than Denver Michigan than St Cloud Michigan St than W Michigan Ohio St than Miami of Ohio Penn St than Colorado Col Notre Dame than Omaha See you at the Sioux/Bison Game at Kraft field in 12 hours. -
I've been to ICON Sport Center a few times, with grandson playing hockey. My daughter contributed towards helping building it, so went along for grand opening. My first taught was like a flashback, UND used to play in the Barn and this is for youth hockey, wow!!! What a great floor plan to a terrific building, also overall plan has a layout for two outdoor rinks. U18 crowd was pretty impressed; with Engelstad's Palace and having two sheets of ice across town in a very friendly arena for smaller crowds. Concourse area is pretty neat where you can kind of peak at two different games. This building put GF up another cog in hockey. It's really set up for hockey tournaments (has like a dozen locker rooms under the stands between the sheets of ice).
