DAR Posted November 12, 2008 Share Posted November 12, 2008 If i was traveling there is no way North Dakota would be on my list of premium destinations unless I were a hunter, fisherman, outdoorsman of sorts but the same can be said about Alaska. I agree the scenery around here is awful but as far as i'm concerned that is the only thing Alaska has going for it(besides sarah palin) and we have Sioux hockey here and they have the seawolves. I went hunting out in New Salem a few weeks ago and I thought it was nice place. I like the Buttes of Bismarck/Mandan. The Missouri River is kind of cool in my opinion. The lake and Bridge out by 4 Bears is kind of neat. Yeah I hear ya Goon...but i am talking in the grand scheme of things. I like the state of North Dakota but I am just saying Alaska is an unbelievable act of nature. The only thing that compares is Yellowstone National Park in the lower 48. I like the state of North Dakota but I am just saying Alaska is an unbelievable act of nature. The only thing that compares is Yellowstone National Park in the lower 48. alaska is scenic, and for me worth the 6 hour flight across the frozen yukon of canada, but there is a reason it is so vastly underpopulated. it's dark half of the year (yes, even darker than us, quite a bit actually), it's cold (like us) and frozen most of the year, but unlike us, not even remotely close to anything and does not have much to offer if you are not an outdoorsman or ex-con trying to get away. and to say nd has no scenic value at all, you must be very limited in what parts you have seen. fargo and grand forks are not scenic, noone's going to argue that. travel west of bismarck once. it is georgeous out there, especially in the medora, teddy roosevelt natl park, badlands area. even garrison dam/lake sakajawea is beautiful (when it has water ) it's not for everyone, and i'll second goon in saying, thank god, i like it that way. nd is not high on many people's lists of "have to see", but it is still a great place to be, i chose it over 49 other states, and don't regret my decision... except in february when i have to travel i29 after a sioux game driving on the glare ice with a 40 mph wind . [Don't allow any of that to fool you into thinking that the Seawolves are in any way the "favorite" this weekend. They're not. It's a rare thing to peg any road team as the favorite in a WCHA series. Statistics or not; the fact is that these two teams are tied in the conference standings. UND is notoriously tough to beat in front of the blood-hungry mob they call fans. They've got all the amenities that gambling profiteer Uncle Ralph could possibly shove into an arena. In the rafters are banners from 7 National Championships that testify to a long and storied excellence in Division 1. But you know what? Banners don't skate. History is the past. I have had the pleasure of hunting out west a few times and It is breath taking. Nothing beats come into the bad lands at about 80 miles an hours its like wow. Opps, I almost missed the Medora exit again. I also had the most awesome golf experience golfing in Medora at the Bully Pulpit. The back nine up in the hills is unbelievable. Hey North Dakota isn't for everone and I thank God for it, I don't want to have to fight someone with a blue liscense plate for a place to hunt. Lets not tell all of these people about it either. I actually like the wide open flat spaces of North Dakota and NW Minn. For whatever reason, I love it when the snow blows across the road during those long flat stretches, like on 21 between EGF and TRF, being able to see only 10 feet in front of you. Brad Miller will play on defense again. And speaking of Miller, later I'll post a link to his Brad Miller Time weekly show. This week's topic: Freshmen Gone Wild. I'm a little scared. Back on topic, Hakstol said that there was a player who was left back in Grand Forks with an injury last weekend, so Brad Malone was not a healthy scratch. He should be ready to go this weekend. Same with Zach Jones. Hakstol did mention that the team needs to get healthy. I'm more than happy to allow UND fans to support their team for all the same reasons that anyone supports their own home team. However, UND fans in no way limit themselves to that sort of support. They are actively the biggest whiners on the planet. They celebrate Holy Cross's win over Minnesota as if it was a UND championship. They regularly pummel anyone who writes anything remotely negative about their team. Ask the editors at INCH (write to Jess Myers and ask how much email he got for picking them 7th this year) ... Ask the editors at College Hockey News ... Ask the editors at USCHO and ask ANY blogger on the college hockey internet. One of them last year even threatened me if I ever came to North Dakota. My God. Next comment ... someone will point out how great their arena is and what wonderful attendance they have as if that somehow invalidates any of the truth about their state that I've said on this blog. And oh yeah ... if you think this minor dusting up of all things North Dakota is insulting then read what I wrote last year to be truly offended. But what is more exciting is that the legend of the Sea-Wolf could be told from the perspective of many different Indian tribes from British Columbia to the Nazca Plain in Peru.
