dagies
I don't know man. I'm just not getting a warm fuzzy on this one. Personally, I like something a bit more aggressive sounding.
choyt3
Exactly, dagies. Why not just go with "Kelly Green", then?

Siouxmama
As much as I love emeralds...and rubies and sapphires and diamonds.............I don't like it for a team name.
larsensa
Not a fan of the Emeralds. University of North Dakota Imperials seems pretty good to me. It seems this may have been suggested before but it would be a nice way to recognize the Engelstads for all they have done for UND. I think it also passes all of the questions that were listed in Dave's article. Our hockey team and other sports teams could rule over all others. Imperial is defined on Dictionary.com as: adj. Of, relating to, or suggestive of an empire or a sovereign, especially an emperor or empress: imperial rule; the imperial palace.Ruling over extensive territories or over colonies or dependencies: imperial nations.Having supreme authority; sovereign.Regal; majestic. [*]Outstanding in size or quality. [*]Of or belonging to the British Imperial System of weights and measures. n. An emperor or empress. The top of a carriage.Something outstanding in size or quality.A variable size of paper, usually 23 by 33 inches (55.8 by 83.8 centimeters).A pointed beard grown from the lower lip and chin. There would be a ton of ways that we would be able to market the team with this name. We could change the name of the Ralph to the Imperial Palace as well to recognize Ralph's casino. Tons of stuff could be done with this for a logo too. PCM
Imperialism does carry something of a negative connotation.
Chewey
Imperialism does carry something of a negative connotation. Yep. See NCAA. What are the realistic odds of just having "North Dakota"? There are many benefits to this, not the least of which is that no committee of PC professor types would be appointed for purposes of finding a completely sanitized and boring nickname. larsensa
Imperialism does carry something of a negative connotation. It is good for a sports team though because it is about domination. The NCAA can't criticize us for a name they can relate too. If they did we would have to ask why since they are the imperials of college sports rules and regulations. mksioux
I don't like 'Emeralds' because it has nothing to do with North Dakota or the region.

I'm more worried about linking "Imperials" with the Engelstad name, given his past problems. On the plus side, we'd be called the Imps and we could use Calvin the comic character for our logo. Sioux-cia
The Emeralds. Hmm, sounds like a 1950's bebop singing group.

redwing77
The Emeralds. Hmm, sounds like a 1950's bebop singing group. The Imperials are no different (as referenced in previous posts in other threads). I'm not much for Emerald either. It's like being the Green. Marquette tried that and nearly lost their alumni funding over it (they became, briefly, the "Gold")
