GBpakrzz
Excuse the ignorance here.... But maybe you folks can help me out? How did the Sioux miss out on the Potulny brothers and Irmen. Did the Sioux not recruit these guys or did they choose the Gophers over UND? I've always wondered but never really knew the scoop.

Did the Sioux not recruit these guys or did they choose the Gophers over UND? I've always wondered but never really knew the scoop. I was told that Blais did not recruit the Potulnys. Not going to gossip here but the older one did some really stupid, inappropriate things (even for a HS student) that turned more than a few people off. I can only guess that Blais figured the younger wouldn't come if asked but I don't know for sure if that is why he didn't go for him or if there was another reason. As far as Irmen goes, don't know. I think he got the tour but don't know if he got an invite.

Did the Sioux not recruit these guys or did they choose the Gophers over UND? I've always wondered but never really knew the scoop. Well, Dad Jay played Baseball at UND, so there is a Sioux history. I suspect Blais did not recruit Grant "hard" then Lucia did (to stick it to UND with his mandate to recruit world wide?), and Grant went to UM. Of course Ryan would follow Grant and then Irman followed Ryan. Will ND exodus continue? I don't know, but we steal a lot from Mn., so in the end we still end up ahead. $hit happens! We have Oshie, and many others right now!
burd
Back in the day when the name Gambucci was synonymous with North Dakota hockey, did one of Serge's sons play at UM?
olealumni
I know the whole sotry on this. Blais didn;t even call or do nothing to the older potulny which made there dad and family pretty mad because he thoguth he should be recruited because of his skill level. Htne the younger one came around and was recrutied hard, i mean really hard by blais, but blais made the mistake on not recruiting IRmen as well and Ryan and Irmen siad they wanted to go to the same college and UM recruited both so UM got the potulny. I suspect though that the older potulny playing for UM had a role n the younger going there too but i guess we missed out.
Sioux R Kool
The mis-guided North dakota boys have had good careers with the goofers. But they will soon be forgotten by Minnesota, after their college hockey ends, because they are not from Minnesota.

But they will soon be forgotten by Minnesota, after their college hockey ends, because they are not from Minnesota. Forgotten? Hardly. When you ask gopher fans who some of their favorite players of all time are, both Potulny's and Irmen will be mentioned. Especially Grant Potulny. A three year captain, scored winning ot goal for ncaa title in St. Paul. He was maybe the best team leader I've ever seen. Irmen right now is probably the most popular and most liked player by the fans. Ryan Potulny is leading the nation in goals and is a leading candidate for the Hobey. Gopher fans could care less where the players come from and these three will be remebered forever.

You folks are so proud of your Minnesota boys that players from other teams hometowns get mentioned in every sentence that appears in print. Also - you go so far as to BOO players from Minnesota that decide not to play for the goofs ie. Z.P. Oh yes, a few years ago when Prpich scored one of his goals at the John - one one your more intelligent and hockey savy fans said to me "well, at least he's a good Minnesotan boy"
olealumni
Just an interesting fact. I can't rememeber what i was reading but it was either the st. paul newspaper, or the hokcey program and it listed grant potulny from Grand Forks, MN. I found that really funny. Sioux R Kool
You may think that they will not be forgotten in Minnesota, for now, as they are currently still playing. Give it time. All of us Sioux fans and the greater Grand Forks area will forget about them soon after their college playing days are done. They could have been home-town heroes, if they would have played and performed as well for the Sioux, who knows what may have happened. They could have been somebody, soon they will be has-been goofers.

Oh yes, a few years ago when Prpich scored one of his goals at the John - one one your more intelligent and hockey savy fans said to me "well, at least he's a good Minnesotan boy" Gopher fans do not boo opposing players who are from Minnesota. If that was the case we'd be booing every time an opposing player touches the puck. I've had season tickets for the gophers since '89 and booing players from Minnesota has never been an issue. Marty Sertich got a very nice ovation from the Mariucci crowd about a month ago when they were in town. Kessel in Madison, and the potulny's and Irmen in Grand Forks get booed more than any opposing player has at Mariucci. We're used to Minnesotans playing on other teams. Did you know that last year at the Frozen Four, 42% of the players involved were from Minnesota? It's old hat for us to see other rosters filled with Minnesotans, therefore we are rarely bitter about losing a player(with the exception of Z. Parise). I am glad to hear you were annoyed about losing out on Parise because some good Canadian genes and training is what that family is all about. I threw that stat out too show how that we've been dealing with players leaving our state to play for our rivals forever. We're used to it. It doesn't bother us in the least. And yes, I am proud of that stat. Minnesota's my home state where I was born and raised so I do take pride in knowing that Minnesotans are sprinkled throughout most of college hockey's rosters. As they say on K-Fan he will always be able to find work in Minneapolis. Ryan P. will be on the mural. If for some reason the Wild are so stupid to let Irmen come back next year he would likely make the mural as well.
MafiaMan
A conversation I had with a Gopher fan in my section at the 2001 WCHA Final Five before the St Cloud/Sioux title game: "Go Huskies! Minnesota pride!" "You're cheering for St Cloud because of the number of Minnesotans on the roster?" "Yep." (As I hand him a program) "Here, count the number of Minnesota kids playing for the Sioux and compare that with the number from St Cloud." (as he hands the program back to me) "So what." As long as they want to wear the "M" they will be true gophers. Just because I'm proud of the amount of Minnesotans in college hockey doesn't mean I care where the Gopher players come from. GBpakrzz
Well hell, I didn't mean to start WWIII here. Thanks for the info on the Potulny sisters and their sidekick, Irmen. Seriously though, I just found it odd that such great hockey players from GF left to play elsewhere. It didn't make much sense to me. Seriously though, I just found it odd that such great hockey players from GF left to play elsewhere. It didn't make much sense to me. Had the Sioux gone after Grant Potulny(who was not highly touted at all) everything might have been different. I'm sure Ryan would've followed him and Irmen wanted to play with Ryan so all three probably would've been Sioux. The reason Lucia went after Grant was because he didn't want his first non Minnesota recruit to be a star. He thought there would be enough pressure already being the only non minnesotan, so he wanted someone who was a hard worker and good team player. Grant turned out MUCH better than anyone expected and the rest is history.
