Catering to that 10 percent that love to be mascots

The University of North Dakota is fighting to retain a mascot they call the Fighting Sioux. The people they are aping no longer call themselves Sioux, but instead call themselves by their traditional names. Sioux was a bastardization of French and Ojibwe which could be interpreted as

Looks like our friends from SC are at it again, with the support of SCSU. God Bless America.:lol:

I guess figuring out who is is putting the swastika's around there campus is OK with them. But god forbid the Sioux would come to town. THey need to get their own house in order before they should worry about the sioux!. The term glass houses comes to mind.

Here's a recent photo of some of the protesters.:lol:

Agreed. I heard of this on NPR too. Don't they ever get that UND DOES NOT HAVE A MASCOT!!!!! The PC protest-minded "activists" do have the same mentality as Heydrich, Himmler and the boys. Remember the fellow on this board who said that all people who use "Fighting Sioux" at any hockey games should be removed? Personally, I think UND should just continue to use the nickname regardless of NC00 sanctions. Those French wannabes that settled the thing should be ashamed.

SCSU really needs to shut their mouths. They have had enough trouble lately. What are they protesting, the NCAA has said that UND is not on the list anymore. I just think people need a reason to bitch. I was also told by a former student at SCSU that som professors offer extra credit to students that protest the Sioux when they come to town. The person I talked to said one professor even went as far as to say that if you protest UND you will get an automatic "A" for the class. Well if I know college students, I would protest for an hour, hold a dumb sign and collect my "A".

What are they protesting, the NCAA has said that UND is not on the list anymore.

But, the nickname is still there.

And, ND hasn't exponentially expanded its victims studies programs (along with an expansion of needed "teachers" who will draw a generous state salary and benefits package to do little more than what they're already doing: spouting nonsensical blather and the wildest of broad-based conclusions based on almost non-existant evidence).

And of course, the ever-popular apology is certainly going to be demanded here.

So yes, your school isn't on the NCAA's list anymore. But you'll be on the PC protesters S-List at least until your great-grandchildren are in college.

I just think people need a reason to bitch.

You got that right. And if the reason isn't there, well why not just make one up? See the letter to the editor about the "skinned" photos if you need any more evidence.

Want to bet the North Central Accreditdation Committee won't even consider this before giving the college an A+ for its "socially progressive programs"??

People may still have the position that the use of Native American nicknames by non-native schools to be inappropriate, independant of any action by the NCAA. In that respect, they should not be criticized.

IF (and IMHO, that's a huge if) that is truly their opinion, then they should be criticizing FSU, Utah, SDSU and probably a few others. And they should also be identfying what qualifies a school as "native" and why Pembroke is off their list.

Then they should tell us why Notre Dame, St John's and all the rest who use any sort of ethnic nickname should be protested.

Personally, I think they're protesting just to protest.

BTW, here's a few photos of people at the Rose Bowl. You may have seen some of these people on television. In spite of the First Amendment guarantees that all people (including Poli Sci grads) simply will not be offended, somehow they snuck in.

Also: not photographed here but seen on local TV was one person who was wearing a "Chief Illiniwek"hat at the game. That would be the popularly elected Lieutenant Governor of the State of Illinois. (No word yet on impeachment proceedings.)

I would like to stand up (no not cheer) but applaude those people who showed support for the Chief. I hope Sioux fans do the same thing when our nickname goes away. I know i will still show up in my Sioux hockey jersey!!

Are they protesting up at the Dakota Sioux Casino?

Didn't think so.

Exactly, it is only OK when they think it will benefit them. If the name Sioux is so bad then they should keep it out of their advertisements for their casino's, Hypocrites.

Once again St. Clown should clean up their own house before complaining about someone else's. Their little hate crimes have been going on for a ling time.

One protester's sign bore a large swastika with the words, "It's just a logo, right?"

Please tell me who has this logo for a team?? Even in Germany anything with the swastika is banned. If a video game has it its banned so this protester is a f-cking idiot. A swastika is a hell of a lot worse than the Sioux logo. Maybe then St. Cloud should switch to the swastika logo since the NCAA says the Sioux nickname is NOT hostile and abusive (anymore). Hey SCSU its just a logo right?? Dumb@sses :D
