With the high school hockey season completed on both sides of the Red River of the North, I figured I would put out an intriguing and completely outside the box idea.

What if Grand Forks Central, Grand Forks Red River and East Grand Forks merged their programs into a conglomerate known as the Grand Cities Green Wave.

We have seen high schools in the Red River Valley co-op with schools on the opposite side of the river before. But this would be taking that concept in a whole different direction.

The team would play in Minnesota’s big school classification (Class AA), in Section 8AA. All games would have to be played in the EGF Civic Center, otherwise we couldn’t call it a Minnesota-based team.

This would have different effects on two area teams: Warroad and Moorhead.

Warroad would benefit from this, as their biggest obstacle to reaching St. Paul in March would be removed.

Moorhead, on the other hand, would be damaged the most by this, as it would make their path to St. Paul in March much more difficult.

The reaction from the rest of the “State of Hockey”? I think Edina would be knocked off their current pedestal as the most hated team in Minnesota. But it would be cool to watch Greater Grand Forks kids match their skills against the best Minnesota has to offer.

Thoughts?

IF Grand Forks wouldn't have added on the new gym and pool at Central in the late 80's or early 90's (and turned it into condos) AND not added onto RRHS (and made it a middle school) in 1993 and decided to build 1 large High School somewhat centrally located north and south near the interstate we could have one hockey (and others of course) team that could abviously compete against bigger schools across the river.....

and the nickname would'be been Grand Forks High School ___________________________?

AND this would've meant the "can't have 2 schools named roughriders" wouldn't have been around and UND would more than likey be the UND Rough Riders!!

rip siouxvolley!
