UND (4-12, 0-3) vs USD (7-7, 0-3) 1/10 7 PM

Lets be honest, UND had a road trip to forget.  UND had no answer for the Denver offense and limped back to Grand Forks with their 3rd Summit loss of the season.  Now they are home for 3 games this week and they start off the homestand with a makeup game against the Yotes.

About USD:

Valentines Day Weekend 2021.

USD rolled into the Betty the leaders of the Summit, at 9-1.  They just came off of a split against their arch rivals SDSU.  They had the two nuclear weapons who could go get 30+ in Umude and AJ.  They were taking on a UND squad that was up and down like a see saw.  They felt that 2 wins in Grand Forks were there for the taking and a surprising Summit crown was in reach.

Bentiu Panoam says hi.

The plucky UND guard from Alaska held off the dynamic duo and things started to unravel a bit for USD.  After being swept by UND, they went home to take down ORU before the 2nd game getting called off due to COVID.  It set up a titanic clash against NDSU in Vermillion.  Game 1 went to the Yotes... but the victory was pyrrhic as AJ went down with an serious knee injury.   Although they still had Umude, it just wasn't enough as they fell in the semis to NDSU.

With AJ missing the entirety of the season and Umude leaving to Arkansas, USD looked square ahead to a team that looked solid on paper but not totally filled with star power.  They had a good non-conference season but their start to the conference season has been rough and, like UND, just had to deal with a COVID issue.   They also have injury concerns with their best player, Fuller.

Needless to say, Todd Lee will get his team ready to go and will make anyone playing the Yotes a tough night with their defense.

About Todd Lee (209-128 overall record, 54-47 at USD, 28-22 Summit Record)

The Huron, SD native enters his 4th year as the coach of the Yotes.  So far his records at USD have been pretty solid, with back to back top 3 finishes in his last two years in the conference.  However, it is hard to wonder in those two years:  What if.  They certainly had a good enough team to make a run in 2020, but Marlon Stewart had other plans in the Summit Quarterfinals.  They had a really good team that could have won it all, but the AJ injury took the wind out of the sails.  This year is a bit of a holding pattern until AJ comes back, but Lee will make it difficult for any team.

Key Player: Mason Archambault (6'0 Senior)

The Rapid City native is having a great 2nd season for the Yotes.  Taking advantage of the playing time, he has averaing 12.5 ppgs and 4 rebounds a game.  He has been solid from the free throw line (90%) and does a great job taking care of the ball.  He is a part of a solid 3 guard lineup with Fuller and Perrott-Hunt.

Series History:

Series History: UND has a 103-92 series lead.  The series at the D1 level is tied at 8-8.  Sather is 4-2 against USD so far and they have won 4 straight against the hated Yotes.

Other Make-Up Games:

NDSU (2-1) @ DU (2-2):  Denver came off an impressive with over UND with their talented freshman Porter going off.  NDSU survived an upset attempt against Omaha, but the big story was the knee injury to Grant Nelson. Will be something to watch going forward for the Bison.

Omaha (2-3) @ UMKC (1-1):  Hey, Kansas City gets to play a basketball game again!  It has been 19 days since the Roos have played a basketball game, so they should be well rested!  Omaha nearly pulled off a shocker against NDSU.  Maybe their young freshman have turned a corner?  We shall see.

Key:

1) Figure out how to play defense

The Call:

UND needs to figure out what they want to be this year and there are players and coaches that need to look themselves in the mirror and start to play like they are capable of.  If UND is looking for any silver lining, it is this:  They have 3 straight home games this week.  A really good week at home could be the catalyst to turn this thing around.  It has to be on the defensive side of the ball.  They need to figure out a personal, a scheme, anything to step things up on the defensive side of the ball.  USD has been a bit of a fixer to UND these last two years, it would be nice to see if it is the case here. USD comes in wounded, but until they prove to me otherwise, USD will probably come away with the win.

USD 81-71

Game is on ESPN+

Well it was dead last year with no fans so anything would be an upgrade :)

In all seriousness, not great.

I'm not talking crowd size I'm just talking the whole atmosphere.  But I hear ya about covid,  you are right there !  Just want a fun environment to get the players pumped up.
