NHL expanding to Seattle in 2014?

With the Las Vegas Golden Knights being a big success in the ticket sales booth ( have one of the highest grossing sales in the NHL) against all the nay sayers opinions, the NHL seems inclined to cash in for a 32nd team.  Houston would be their ice dream as it is the 4th largest metro in the USA and doesn't have a team. What more could a network ask?

The Calgary Flames are demanding a new arena with city dollars.  Bettman will use Fertitta and Houston as a possible destination first for holding Calgary hostage so the Flames get their wish.  One has to play Bettman's game first to get on an expansion list.

The owners of the Montreal Canadiens have been tweeting that they are not opposed to a Quebec City franchise, when many suspected that they would want some compensation for loss of exclusive French rights etc.  Maybe Houston will be the 16th Western franchise, then that frees up Quebec City for the 33rd NHL team and later Seattle for the 34th team.

How many NHL teams can be sustained?  Talent dilution seems like it will be an issue, especially if the Russians can some how get a stable KHL that keeps some talent in Europe.

In 1976, there were 32 teams between the NHL and WHA.  Now the NHL has 31, there are many more Americans and Euro's playing and the Russians and Czechs and Slovaks couldn't play.  Seems like the NHL can be at 34 teams.

Seattle city council approved 7-1

The earliest the Key Arena renovation can be done and accomodate an NHL team is `20-'21.   The TV Producer Jarry Bruckheimer wants a Seattle NHL team as does Wall Street mogul, David Bonderman.  The NHL is talking $700 million now for an expansion team as they got $500 mil for Vegas.

The Seattle city council may have kissed goodbye to the NBA.  A new Seattle NBA team likely can't own the remodeled arena, so much of the value of an NBA franchise is gained by owning the arena too as an arena and franchise owner need not share in the high price suites and seats,  If the NBA expands, it might get $2 Billion for another seat at the table.

Horrible decision by the city council. With very little parking and no transit other than bus, this will be terrible for fans. I heard today someone said they were at a concert at Key Arena recently and it took them an hour and a half to get out of downtown - and the arena was only about 65% full.

$650 mil for an expansion team is pricey.  Houston and QC must be waiting for a relocation, as the NHL has said only Seattle's app will be accepted.

Peter Karmanos Jr has signed a Letter of intent to sell the Carolina Hurricanes to a former Texas Rangers owner for $500 mill and keeping them in Raleigh. This removes talk of that franchise moving from Raleigh at least for seven years as the rink has a contract that long.

Hartford and Quebec City need expansion teams or must wait on the Panthers, which are tied to a rink contract in Sunrise, Fl, for five years.

Toronto will get a second team before Harford gets a team.

There is an awful lot of nostalgic fans, including here, that want a Whalers team back.  It won't happen unless some billionaire also is nostalgic.  Hartford is losing people and is almost bankrupt, so an owner would have to build an arena and pay for the team all out of his own pocket.  Hartford now has a UConn hockey team so the market has changed.

The NHL wants Houston and Seattle as those are huge markets which would help TV ratings.  A market like Atlanta, with a new arena in suburban Cobb or Gwinnett counties, would be much preferred to Hartford or even a second Toronto team.

There was talk about UConn building a on-campus hockey arena that meets Hockey East standards.

The Islanders may get a new 18,000 seat arena next to Belmont Park right at the border between Queens and Nausau County.

The New York City FC is also trying to build a 26,000 seat outdoor stadium at that spot.

Only one can win and they might both lose as some neighbors don't want anything built there, in spite of already heavy traffic beside Belmont Raceway.

Barclays simply isn't a hockey venue with plastic piping and obscured views for thousands.

Wait wait wait... Didn't they have the Atlanta Thrashers and prove that Atlanta is not a hockey town? No... You don't get a do over this quickly.

The owners of the Thrashers and Phillips Arena decided that they didn't want the Thrashers anymore.  Fan support would have been much better if the owners actually wanted the team and advertised.  Support would be much high in Cobb County or Gwinnett County, where most hockey fans live, as getting to a parking spot isn't so risky as in downtown Atlanta.  The Braves left downtown for Cobb County for a reason.  But it would take a billionaire with a promise of a new Arena in the northern suburbs to get the NHL interested again

The arena option will be unveiled today as the pick.  So the Islanders will get a new 18,000 seat home unless they lose a lawsuit, which will inevitably come soon by the NIMBY neighbors to Belmont Park.

The Seattle city council missed this part with the arena choice.
