A key 3 pointer by Jamal Webb and a double-double off the bench from Troy Huff was just enough to get a much needed victory over Bowling Green (56-53). Now UND (3-8,0-2) will begin their 1st real Big Sky road swing as they head on out to Idaho State to take on the Bengals. Tip off is at 8:05 PM at Holt Arena

MEDIA

The Game will be on Big Sky Tv and will also be heard on the UND radio network

HISTORY

This will be the 3rd ever meeting between the two schools. The all time record is split at 1 apiece. These two teams played those 2 games last year, as they split the series. Each team protecting their home court.

FUN FACTS

  • With 88 more points, Troy Huff will become the 32nd player in UND history to get to 1000 career points.
  • Jamal Webb is currently leading the Big Sky conference in steals with 2.4 SPG
  • This game will feature 2 players currently in the top ten in free throw percentage. Tomas Sanchez is 2nd in the conference and Aaron Anderson is 7th.

ABOUT THE IDAHO STATE BENGALS (1-10, 0-2)

The Bengals are lead under coach Bill Evans (1st Year). The Bengals were picked 9th in the conference by both the coaches and the media. So far the Bengals have been a real work in progress under Coach Evans. The make up of the team is several JUCO/transfer players and a few HS players. Despite a 7-9 year in the sky, they went 9-21 overall on the season. The first two conference games were on the road against PSU and EWU and came up empty in both (63-49, 57-54). When looking at this team, they do not like to play offense... at ALL. Their 49 PPG is at or near the bottom of all D-1 teams, with their rebounding not that much better. Looking at the roster, they aren't the biggest bunch of players in the world (except they do have a 7-4 player, but he doesn't play as much). So I guess with an undersize and undertalented squad, you need to win any way you can. So they want to slow the game down and take away the possessions. They have done this successfully against several teams (holding CS-Fullerton, the third best scoring team in the nation, to 66 points, which is their lowest output of the season). However, they have not shot the ball well enough to get rewarded with many victories.

KEY PLAYERS

#3 5-11 G Melvin Morgan SR (12.4 PPG, 4.1 RPG, 2.7 APG, .366 FG%, .179 3P%, .718 FT%)

Senior leadership is very important for any squad, even if it comes from a 2 year JUCO player. This kid fits the bill. After a decent Junior year for the Bengals, he has gotten off to another decent start. However, he has struggled from behind the arch this year (coming down from nearly shooting 40% his junior year). He has proven that he can be a good floor general, however he can be wild with the ball at times. Does get to the line and he is a halfway decent free throw shooter (an 0-4 performance last time out against Washington State kinda puts a damper on your percentage), especially when you only have taken 39 attempts. Definitely the biggest guy you need to keep in check for this team.

#20 6-4 G-F Chris Hansen SO (9.2 PPG, 2.4 RPG, 1.0 APG, .344 FG%, .361 3P%, .813 FT%)

Another first year transfer that has been getting some success for ISU. This kid is their 3 point shooter, as most of his shots have been from behind the arch his year and has had a decent showing with his 36.1% shooting percentage. The other thing is that he really hasn't done much other than shoot from behind the arch. While he does make his shots from the line, he as only taken 16 attempts so far and in 5 out of 11 games he has attempted 1 free throw. He does had the ability to grab a few rebounds from time to time and sneak in the occasional 2, 3 assist game, but he knows his role.

#1 6-3 G Tomas Sanchez JR (8.5 PPG, 3.9 RPG, 3.4 APG, . 431 FG%, .400 3P% .875 FT%

Another key player that has been brought over from the JUCO ranks that has been able to make a sizeable impact for the Bengals. This is a kid that can do a little bit of everything for the Bengals. While he isn't the first option for scoring on the team, he has the capability of putting up 15+ in a game as they has done twice already this year (17 against CS-Fullerton). He also is a sneaky guy on the boards and does a very nice job in the steals department. Another thing about this kid is he is a very good free throw shooter. To start his season, he had a streak of 23 straight makes at the free throw line, before missing on against Oregon on December 5th. A kid you need to make sure you keep in check and not let this kid go off.

KEYS TO THE GAME

1) Road Woes: If UND still wants to contend for a conference crown, or to make the conference tournament all together, then they need to STOP this BS on the road and play a good game and WIN. Hopefully the BGSU game gives them the confidence and swagger they need to play well on this road trip.

2) Pace: UND cannot play ugly ball with the Bengals. They need to pick the pace up any chance they get and they need to nail shots. If they can get up on them, it might cause them to get out of their pace a little bit

3) Shooting: Looking back at the SUU game, going 18/60 from the field is not acceptable, especially when you go 28-35 from the line. Our shooters need to be ready to go. Huff has done a good job so far since he has been back from his Jaw injury. Anderson needs to stop his stupid cramping and finish a game for a change. Most importantly, Schuler and Antwi need to make shots.

4) Rebounding: We need to kill they guys on the boards, without question. My expectations might be too high, but I am expecting someone on UND to get once again 10+ rebounds. BOPCO. Huff and Webb need to continue to rebound at a high rate and Wilmer needs to get back to getting 8-10 boards a game here.

5) Free Throws: We have done well this year in making them for the most part, keep it up and get to line as much as possible. This is always very key to winning on the road.

Idaho State is a tough team to beat at thier house, doesnt matter how good or bad they are they are tough to beat at home.

A good example of this is a few years ago Weber played ISU at home and beat them by like 20, Weber played at Idaho State and won on a last second layup in triple overtime.

I'm thinking you guys are gonna leave Pokeytato with a W though, a hard fought W.

Hope you are right cause road wins don't come very often unless its conference tournament time when we are 5-0 the last couple of years. This is no doubt a must win for us cause you guys are next and then Montana at home. We've got to win this game for any hopes of getting into the conference tournament, which is what we are fighting for right now.

Not to split hairs, but none of those Great West tournament games were against the host school, so all were neutral site games. The odd thing is that the current junior class has actually been quite good in neutral site games--6-1. It just makes the futility in true road games all the more puzzling.

You are correct. What I should have written is non-home game, to me its still on the road but correct it was a neutral site cause we did not play Utah Valley first year nor Chicago State the following year. We need tonights game and without Brekke it just got alittle tougher.

Also, it's not like our former Great West foes presented very hostile environments. Obviously we've had losses at Kansas and Kansas State and at other higher level programs but the futility we've shown on the road at places like Chicago State and Houston Baptist is baffling.
