fightingsioux4life Posted December 23, 2012 Posted December 23, 2012 A solid, all-around performance by the Purple today, on the road against one of the top teams in the AFC. Everyone is focused on AP's quest for 2K (yards) and the single-season rushing record, but the defense is much improved from last year and has some young, talented guys starting for them. A couple of more drafts like 2012 and this will be a tough team to beat week in and week out. Quote

Quite a performance by the defense today, shutting down that potent offense on their field is a feat, and they actually moved the ball other ways besides Peterson. Every Viking fan I know thought we were looking at about 4-5 wins this year, of course that was not counting on anything from Peterson. Another good draft, a couple free agents, and a healthy Harvin and maybe this team can make some noise next year. Would be something if they could sneak into the playoffs this year. Quote
jodcon Posted December 23, 2012 Posted December 23, 2012 Marriage is good for Ponder I hope you're right, he looked more relaxed today anyway. Quote

Rodney Harrison of Football Night in America would disagree with that. He ripped the Texans for not doing better against the Viking defense because "it's a decent defense.......but not that good." What a load of crap. This team would not have anything close to a winning record without the defense doing what it has been doing most of the season. What's next, Jared Allen is overrated? Harrison can stick his opinion where the sun don't shine. 1 Quote

I had no hopes of the Vikings having a winning record this season, and regardless of how they finish the defensive staff is owed a huge pat on the back for getting this team to the brink of a postseason birth. If they finish 10-6 Leslie Frasier may be up for coach of the year (will not win it, repeat, will not win it). With the horrible QB play they have gotten this season, and Pearcy being the only legit WR on the team before getting hurt, to make the postseason says something about keeping the group together. Oxbow6 Posted December 24, 2012 Posted December 24, 2012 If Seattle beats SF (up 14-0), GB will go into the Dome next week and beat Minny to clinch #2 NFC seed and knock Vikes outa playoffs. Quote

Thank you captain obvious!!!! I was hoping this last game of the year for the packers would be meaningless. Unfortunately it will likely be for a bye, which means Green Bay is dressing their starters. Quote

But if AP goes off again for 200 and change, a Vike's win is possible and would pair the 2 up at Lambeau in round one of playoffs. Quote
Wilbur Posted December 24, 2012 Posted December 24, 2012 Yup, basically a Vikings win guarantees a rematch the following week. The defense would hold them in it for a while at Curly's place, but Ponder winning a playoff game on the road doesn't really make any sense. Whatever happens on Sunday, given the cards this team was dealt, this season can be called a success for the Vikings. Win win situation for the Packer fans in attendance at the metrodump. Knock the Vikings out of the playoffs on their home field, or just smile and say "see ya next week". Quote

You are pretty confident considering that the Vikings D held the Packer offense in check for most of the game in Green Bay. If Ponder had played even an average game, the outcome could have been much different. AP had an awesome game vs. the Packer defense (which is up and down depending on which week it is) and next week's game is in the Dome, so Lombardi's ghost won't help the Packers this time. It will be a great game and tickets will probably cost a small fortune. Go Vikings!!! Quote

Matthews and Shields were MIA last game...both back now and watch out for #21. He is due back soon. Quote

It's always a bit of a let down when one of the teams is bad and the game doesn't have much meaning to it. Kind of like the 2002 game vs. the Bison in the Dome. Both teams sucked that year and so did the game itself. Quote
fightingsioux4life Posted December 24, 2012 Posted December 24, 2012 Here is what Rodney Harrison said about the Texans before he declared the Viking defense "not that good": “If I’m Houston, I’m concerned offensively. They can’t even score a touchdown at home against Minnesota.” http://sportsmedianews.com/football-night-in-america-notes-quotes-week-16-2/ Yeah, Jared Allen and company had nothing to do with it either, right Rodney? Fetch Posted December 24, 2012 Author Posted December 24, 2012 I bought a $30 ticket at Ceasars Place that the Vikings win the SB it would be worth $1500 if they do - should I spend it now 2 Quote
jimdahl Posted December 30, 2012 Posted December 30, 2012 Game day -- Unless the Eagles come up with something they haven't had in them all year (they're currently down by 28), it looks like the Vikings will need the win to make the playoffs. What's the gameplan? It clearly depends what GB does, but choosing between giving AP a shot or Ponder a shot, they're clearly going to stack against AP and hope Ponder has a mediocre day. That puts the whole thing on Ponder's shoulders -- can he establish enough of a threat that they have to cover him a bit, thus freeing up AP a bit? Ideally, the Packers go in assuming not, Ponder establishes an early lead, then the Vikings get to lean on AP a bit more; but, it's hard to imagine any way this goes down that it doesn't come down to how good Ponder is today. Vikes D also has create more opportunities than the O gives up (we're looking at you, again, Ponder). Quote
Wilbur Posted December 30, 2012 Posted December 30, 2012 Just give the ball to Peterson every play.....He's less than 100 yards away.....every play..... Quote
jimdahl Posted December 30, 2012 Posted December 30, 2012 Just give the ball to Peterson every play.....He's less than 100 yards away.....every play..... Unfortunately, the game being this close is probably going to mean a more balanced approach for the next 15 minutes or so, but one big breakout is all it takes.... one big breakout. Quote
fightingsioux4life Posted December 31, 2012 Posted December 31, 2012 Vikings win 37-34. AP finishes 9 yards short of the record. AP does join the exclusive club of running backs that have rushed for 2,000+ in a season and the Vikings join the playoff field!!! Skol Vikings!!! Quote
jodcon Posted December 31, 2012 Posted December 31, 2012 Peterson almost pulled it off but getting the win was the goal. 10 wins from this team is unreal. Probably get rolled next week in GB, but I never thought they would win more than about 5 games this year. Now if the Cowboys can get knocked out tonight it will be a great day all around. And how about those Texans? Geez what a fold job. Quote
Wilbur Posted December 31, 2012 Posted December 31, 2012 Adrian not getting the record hurts. Hopefully they give the Pack a game next weekend, with no 41 donut type outcomes. Quote
Oxbow6 Posted December 31, 2012 Posted December 31, 2012 AP is unreal. MVP IMO. Pack D channeled their inner UND D today. 3rd & 11 blown coverage on final drive was ball game. Pathetic... Quote

The defensive secondaries of both teams today was a joke. A number of stupid plays both ways. Green Bay player with the hands to the face in the fourth quarter.....Jefferson letting Finley get behind him to make it close on that 3rd and 20 play that the official got the spot wrong on.....leaving Jennings with no one within 30 yards of him in the end zone.... That was the Vikings defense channeling their inner Denny Green era defense. Quote

It has to be a concern for GB giving up 450 yards, Ponder had quite a few guys open he missed or it could have been worse yet. On the other side, Minnesota didn't stop GB at all the last 2 1/2 quarters, if the Vikings don't get Winfield and a couple more guys back in the secondary Rodgers might throw for 500. Should be entertaining next week if nothing else, I just hope the Vikings can give them a game at GB. Almost forgot, screw the Bears. Quote
Oxbow6 Posted December 31, 2012 Posted December 31, 2012 If DC Capers doesn't scheme anything better to hold AP to under 150 next week...can his a**! Screw the Bears! Quote
