NCAA Hockey on VERSUS

Yes, it does look like a shun job for the NCHC. When Notre Dame went to Hockey East, Versus/NBC Sports Net went with them. It figures that Denver gets a few (larger market) but I would have at least liked to see more of CC; kind of surprised that a Denver-CC Gold Pan game wasn't in the lineup. I was really hoping for more North Dakota road games, I guess.

Accordng to College Hockey News, the Feb 10th game at Duluth is on CBS College Sports, so that's one thing to look forward to.

Its not WCHA/NCHC, but there is always a silver lining and in this case that is more College Hockey on television.

If Notre Dame did go to the NCHC I don't see the NCHC fan base being to pleased with having to watch most of Notre Dames games on tv. I mean I am happy for their recent success but they would be low on the totem pole as far as how successfully they have been as a program. To a North Dakota, Denver, CC and UMD fan having Notre Dame games televised more is outrageous and would be unacceptable to most fans.

If you are talking college hockey, yeah, UND, DU, CC, and UMD fans would not be happy about having Notre Dame hockey on all the time. But if you are a general sports network, and want to attract as many viewers as possible, Notre Dame will bring way more eye balls then all of those schools. Obviously it shows that DU is in a large market and is also a prominent hockey school based on the number of games they are getting. So if UND, DU, CC, and UMD fans are happy not being on a fairly big time network because the big time network would want more game from the big time school (but less so in hockey), its hard for me to understand. There are two sides to every coin of course, and while it is nice that the NCHC didn't just sell out to Notre Dame, it also would have been nice to have Notre Dame over SCSU and consequently have more conference games on TV and the Conference Tourney (which UND likely does well in as apposed to Notre Dame) as well.

I get that Notre Dame is a big name especially for college football but not so much college hockey. I kind of figured though Versus/NBC would be looking at more of the eastern schools as they would for sure have east coast bias and larger markets in their favor.

I think you missed the point. Notre Dame may be small in college hockey, but it doesn't matter when Versus/NBC's goal isn't to attract viewers from the relatively small market that is college hockey but rather is to attract as many viewers as possible. And Notre Dame will do that for them.

Hockey may be only the 3rd most well known Minnesota Gophers sport on a national basis, but it is far and away the most popular sport among the U of M fanbase.

You're nuts if you think that statement is true. Hockey is easily the third most popular sport on campus, not even close.

We are moving him to your fan base since he claims to be a fan of both the Sioux and the Gophers.:whistling::xmas::p:D

I do get it though the "Notre Dame" brand and what you are saying. I am saying I don't agree that just because it is Notre Dame playing hockey that a national audience would be able differentiate between the football team and hockey team which I think most people who don't follow college hockey would care less about. But I do understand.

NBC & Notre Dame have history. Notre Dame, because of their football history, is a school with national fans. Fans that already associate NBC with Notre Dame.

On the other hand, there may still be (the Gopher-less) Fox Sports North, later games on Versus (doubtful), Altitude, ESPN3. Who knows what Faison & NCHC have planned at this time?

We have a guy on GPL that was sioux fan, then a gopher fan and then a sioux fan again. We don't even know what to do with him other than shun him lol

Fox Sports North will continue broadcasting all Gopher games when they're not on the B1G Network. Right now I don't think the NCHC has much of a choice for anything. ESPN will not spend the money to put camera crews at NCHC games just to broadcast to a small amount of people on ESPN3.

The reason Denver got so many, from what I can see, is because they're the logical location to use for the double headers because of the time change between east and mountain time. That's why 2 of their 3 are the late games.

Realistically I think the NCHC lost big time on denying Notre Dame if this is what the deal would have been. Sure all of their home games would be televised but when they're on the road it's an opportunity for the rest of the conference. Add that with the conference tournament deal and the NCHC would have hit it big time. All this does now is make the east coast bias in college hockey that much more prevalent  as well as probably lose all chances for a major TV deal for the NCHC. They won't get anything more than Fox College Sports now I bet.

Correct on that one. Versus even broadcast their Spring Football Game in April. Don't be suprised if Sunday Mass is broadcast live next along with a back to back to back "Rudy" Marathon during the off-season.

That's not how ESPN 3 works. They take broadcasts of games and aire them, the broadcasts often come from production units with no affiliation with ESPN. The Fighting Sioux network does a great job of covering home games and could easily work out deals UMD and SCSU if ESPN 3 would make them available for live streaming. I'm positive the ratings for Sioux games would be substantially higher than the majority of sports programs they currently have on there. It seems like it would be a fairly easy to sell to ESPN.

Everytime I've watched things on ESPN3 it's always ESPN doing their own telecast

I know for fact that's not always the case. Middle Tennessee State produces it's own ESPN 3 broadcasts (students mainly), The Tennessee vs. Montana football game was produced by UT. Most of the SunBelt, WAC, C-USA, and MAC games on ESPN3 are produced by the institution hosting the game. All UND would have to do is work out an arrangement with them and send them the live feeds, assuming that UND is not contractually obligated to another network.

This isn't even the gopher fan in me talking, but do you really feel that the fssn does a good job of covering games?

It's too low budget for me. The camera's aren't as nice as FSN's, the music is either elevator music or porn music and all the extras is just cheaply done on powerpoint. The one plus they do is point the cameras at the flippin ice. The last 2 years FSN gets half the crowd and half the ice and you can't follow the puck because its zoomed out so far. Overall I just don't think it's that great of a job and I don't get why people think the coverage is better than FSN

From the sounds of the posters here there are literally millions of people watching UND hockey on TV. So it makes me wonder why can't FSSN pony up and buy a couple of HD camera's. Or heck, buy a couple of iPhone 4s's.

Also, invest in a powerplay clock, stop making us guess at the time.
